Thom Hogan has added his thoughts to the Df launch

Digital (con)Fusion with the Nikon Df | byThom | Thom Hogan

I like the Df and would consider buying it at around $1600 as earlier rumors speculated the price would be.

Had I kept my Non Ai glass maybe I'd be all in at $2750 ?

I replaced my Non Ai lenses with newer Ai & AiS a few years ago so I don't actually need Df.

D700 remains my favorite dslr & it works great with Ai & AiS mounts

I want to get me a RetroD700.

This will use Non Ai lenses thru current 2013 glass.
Nikon offers up a full frame dslr that uses Nikon glass back to 1959.

Amazing.

When I shoot Pentax I am only Pentax shooter in a group of Canikon shooters.

I get the:

"I used to shoot/own Pentax gears but I dumped it in:
"1987, 1990 , 1995, 2000, etc.."

Canikon own 85% plus marketshare year after year, decade after decade.
When you make it to middleaged as I have only a Pentaprism Viewfinder view will do.

Mirrorless is at absolute top a 15% marketshare toy& imaging tool for 20 somethings, not an epic fun shooting experience for those of us with aging eyesight.

Its eyeopening to own and use Aps-c Pentax, Full Frame Canon &or Full Frame Nikon.
Depending on what I'm shooting the conversations are different. I have Never seen a Pentax shooter when I shoot Pentax, Canon or Nikon. Thus Pentax Ricoh Hoya 5% max marketshare seems true to me.

Bloggers get gear for free!
I buy all the gear I own.
Bloggers are suspect.
Bloggers like Ken Rockwell say stupid crap just for the hits and ad links to then pad his bank account:
Month after month year after year, decade after decade.

None of this blogger news is news, it's just noise.

I wish B&H would allow me to clean my purchase links just to make sure I do not reward idiot bloggers with cash they do not deserve.

Well OK then,
I am impressed !

Maybe I will buy my first smaller sensor aps-c dslr since K20D I bought new in 2008.

I didn't notice, does K-3 use a Sony Manufactured Sensor ?

I agree, I'm surprised Ricoh left out vari angle lcd on Pentax K-3.
Canon did it with 60D & again with the newly launched $1,199 Canon 70D:

Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only) 8469B002 B&H Photo Video

Still wished this Ricoh/Pentax bi-logo'd crop body was full frame, then I'd consider buying K-3.
For less coin I'm considering 70D just to have one dslr with vari angle lcd.

10.000,000 slrs sold from the heydays when Pentax was #1 in the 1960's thru 1981 is a milestone.
Just an additional 10,000,000 slr & dslrs sold since 1981, some 32 years later is eye opening.

My first AF SLR I bought new was Pentax way back in 2002, just a year after Pentax full frame Dslr was officially announced in February 2001 & times were very good. Then the years blew by & nothing...

I guess most Pentaxians have gotten tired of waiting & bought into Canikon full frame dslrs instead.

All bought brand new:

One Pentax K20D
Canon 5D Classic x2 & a few new L lenses bought new
Nikon D700 x2 & a one ED Crystal Nano Coat lens & a few AF-S Nikkors bought new w/5 year USA warranty
Canon 5D MarkII x2, no glass bought with those two Mark II dslrs

All my Dslrs were bought in that order.
Wife & I shoot. Sharing lenses is fun, sharing cameras is not fun.

I've purchased all the gear we own, the dslrs I love I then buy in pairs.

Gear buying would have been simple for me if Pentax/Hoya/Ricoh offered full frame in 2001 as announced instead of full colored spectrum bodies & 1980's AutoFocus & ignored SDM issues w/ their "best glass", etc..

I've had zero problems with any Pentax, Canon, or Nikon item I've bought new or used.

I do have a local pro shop that does repairs, I've had no need to repair anything bought used or new since 1993.
I'd add I am picky about researching my purchases, so no SDM lenses for me etc...

Happy Shooting !

Maybe the store you bought from has older D600 inventory.

I would return D600, get your cash back & buy D600 from another dealer with cash back return policy.

I read thru a few Nikon forums and D600 oil issues have been resolved with newly made D600.

I agree D700 is a fine choice if you can find a legit like new example. Having two D700 inhand keeps me from having to buy the newest nikon dslrs.

Once you have a great dslr inhand you can wait and buy when Nikon's QC becomes important for Nikon to care about.

I added more Pentax gear to my kit due to Ben.
Back when I lurked here in early 2007, Ben's art & his insider info hinting that Pentax France thought full frame was just right around the corner made me buy deeply into Pentax. I'd get calls from my favorite local shop when some K Mount lens treasure had just arrived & was available for me to take home & test out.

I stopped lurking here in July 2008 & joined Pentax Forums.

I stopped rewarding Pentax USA with money after my K20D purchase for Christmas 2008 & I since then I have shopped deeply elsewhere & got most of my full frame desires met.

I've noticed when someone leaves the Pentax Cult I am reminded how the last great camera issued wasn't really all that improved over their last dslr.

I did not buy a K-7, K-5 or K-5II. Thats a tidy $3,000+ saved I spent on other brand gear.

As I own both Canon & Nikon Full Frame I follow other forums & look foward to seeing Benji elsewhere.

Due to this lovely chat spot in "off topics "at PF I read up on a host of off brand experiences.

I look foward to reading about the good & bad with Ben's D600. It seems Nikon has sorted out the long protracted quality control issues & now someone like Ben can be in awe of its output on day one! He has once again influenced a purchase possibility, though this time in Nikon's favor. I buy gear during Thanksgiving sales due to best bang for my buck.

D600 had dropped off my shopping radar infavor of buying nothing in 2013.

Ben, you should try out 14-24mm 2.8 Crystal Nanocoat ED Nikkor. Its easily my favorite lens I own for vacations & odd things I capture. It is an acquired taste, maybe not so much for fashion but a big plus for holiday trips.

I only shop at B&H period

Nice to see the K-5 is dropping in price elsewheres.
Why Pentax refuses to share the love with B&H is a mystery to me.

No doubt more Pentax logo'd gear is sold thru B&H in USA than anywhere else & I won't buy from anyone else, so no new "Pentax" goodies to taunt me. Best price via other vendors is another reason keep my money in my wallet.

No biggie, no great deals on K-5 at B&H on Pentax gear leaves me with cash in my pocket. I'm kinda put off with everyone thesedays, the epic 25% yen depreciation vs dollar gets me no traction. Same prices since 2011, whats up with that ? I use what I own & buy nothing more from any imaging company in the meantime...
...well till Turkey Day,
I have high expectations I'll see major price drops in Canon~Nikon.

No clue about what Pentax plans are except the easy guess:

More color decorating, more of the same without ANY full frame k mount option, as usual...

Thesedays the Canon 60D sells for $599 in USA

Canon EOS 60D DSLR Camera (Body Only) 4460B003 B&H Photo Video

while Pentax K-5 remains at $996

Pentax K-5 II Digital SLR Camera 12016 B&H Photo Video

a $400 difference.

70D intrigues me even though I've given up on buying another aps-c sensor camera from anyone.

If Canon offered full frame with articulated viewscreen I'd sell off all my real Pentax Made in Japan gear to buy two Canon FF Dslrs & with remaining cash in hand leftover I'd buy more eos gear. Maybe 17mm TSE or 24mm TSE ??

If Nikon made an articulated viewscreen full frame dslr I'd sell off Pentax treasures and buy two from Nikon and have cash to spare to buy someting else...

Instead I watch as Ricoh after two years wrestles with renaming Pentax "Ricoh" & what 100 colors sell better than the other 100+ colors in 2013-14.

I bought one D700 instead of K-5, then I bought another D700 instead of K-5II.
Sure I spent a few hundered more with Nikon but Pentax still ignores 24x36 market.

Back when one K-7 sold new for $1300 I instead bought two Really Right Stuff BH-55 with Pano heads for same money.
Now K-7 is about worthless while my two BH-55 and two pano heads would still cost $1300.

If you want full frame dslr, then continue to put your photography wants and desires on hold or shop elsewhere.

Happy Full Frame Shopping !

Hey Ben,
I see you've left the great South West for Boston. Wild Times for you & yours !

I still sit on about $6,000 in K Mount glass & assessories.
1/2 of what I once owned since 2002 from Pentax Japan.

I bought into Canon full frame in 2008, added Nikon D700 & various glass for both in 2009. Between Canon and Nikon I've spent easily more than 10,000 US Dollar Bills.
More coin than current cost a Pentax 645D Body Only runs new.

I love full frame 24x36, yet Pentax/Pentax, Pentax/Hoya, now Ricoh/Pentax CONTINUES TO IGNORE me, a full frame 24x36 buyer. Pentax has gained zero dollars from me since 2008.

Zero. Nada. Zilch.

Nikon, Canon scored thousands while Pentax got/gets zero from me, one guy with a wife who shoots too.

Crap, am I "The Pentaxian" Pentax USA wants to hear from in 2013 ???

Really ???

Ricoh ! Make a D600 like or 6D like K mount & be done with it, then I'll have another choice to shop and consider

My first autofocus film camera will always be Pentax which was bought new & my last Pentax dslr bought new "K20" arrived in 2008. Then "I shopped elsewhere" and continue to do so............

I still look here at PF, love the Pentax forums layout & open minded info format, but I am beyond tired of waiting for 24x36 Pentax !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do I need to wait for another buy out of Pentax & then another two years to get it all in order ???????????

For info thesedays I read how fed up remaining current Ricoh owners are pissing around & just waiting for something promised in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 from Ricoh.... at the same time Pentax remaining owners think Ricoh will save the day.

Whatever, I am over it.............................

Well that is when it comes to opening my wallet Pentax is not my 1st or 2nd choice.
Promises made yet Ricoh GXR Products remain vaporeware. Bummer for those believing in the Ricoh "Dream. Maybe Ricoh doesn't care about dslr imaging, as copiers are so profitable. Why bother ? $124 Million was nothing to spend to kill off the Pentax Dslr system, and at same time they can kill off the Ricoh System too. Ricoh why not Be Done with it all and just make copiers, Brilliant !

Maybe I get a K-5IIs :D or Canon 7D for $50 more :D or most likely a 5DIII  for next Christmas. Canon 5DIII with new f8 AF function firmare is most compelling.

Nikon seems plagued with QC problems like Pentax had with K-5, so at the moment Canon wins my many considerations. What matters to me and the wife ??? Full frame is 1st & foremost. Pentax is a great memory. Time to recoup my gear cost & move along with something else.

I cannot imagine spending any money on anything new from Ricoh Pentax in 2013 or 2014.
100 colors Pentax Q10, I have zero interest no money for you Ricoh:

Enjoy the ride Ben !

We're stuck here in Colorado, too pretty to leave.

Pentax some 13 years ago in just 5 days announced...

Pentax 6mp Digital SLR hands-on: Digital Photography Review

On February 11th 2001 Pentax said:

"PMA 2001: Today we got an exclusive hands-on with Pentax's new 6 megapixel digital SLR. At this stage they have an early working prototype which will power up and operate, the onboard software is still a bit rough but the body, controls and operation are already pretty much there. The camera is much smaller and thinner than any other digital SLR, ergonimically it's well designed and everything is where it should be. Pentax haven't named the camera yet.

DENVER, Colorado (February 10, 2001) . . . PENTAX Corporation will preview a new digital autofocus SLR camera (which has not yet been named) at the PMA (Photo Marketing Association) Show held in Orlando, February 11-14, 2001. The addition of this advanced digital SLR camera complements one of the most extensive photographic lines of any manufacturer in the industry including 35mm, APS, medium format and digital for various levels of photographers.

Created along the same developmental concept lines as the new PENTAX MZ-S professional 35mm autofocus SLR camera, this high-end digital SLR will feature a 35mm-film-sized, six megapixel CCD image sensor as well as a DSP and other digital processing components. This package was jointly developed with Philips Electronics in order to realize high-grade image quality, top-level performance and compact dimensions simultaneously. Offering compatibility with the existing PENTAX KAF2 lens mount, it will also accept PENTAX 645-system and 67-system interchangeable lenses (when used with an adapter). This high-performance digital autofocus SLR camera will be ideal for advanced amateurs and professionals who demand top quality images and SLR maneuverability.

The camera will be compatible with four new accessories introduced for the new MZ-S 35mm SLR camera including: 1.) BG-10 Battery Grip, 2.) CS-105 & CS-130 Cable Switches, 3.) TS-110 Release Timer Switch, and the 4.) AF360FGZ Dedicated Flash Unit. The final product specifications, pricing and marketing dates will be announced at a later time."

End of Pentax full frame product announcement quote

So, in 13 years Pentax now has no working camera to show off ???

I bought into Pentax in 2002, a year after their "full frame is coming soon."
I stopped buying brand new Pentax in 2008 after deciding to buy full frame elsewhere.

Good to see the Pentax full frame illusion is alive & well !

I'll add:

The first non existent Pentax full frame was not announced at a bi-annual Photokina.

I'm excited, my old Pentax K Mount glass has just increased in value.
Glad I held onto the lenses while shopping elsewhere for full frame.

The full frame viewfinder allows me to really see what I'm shooting.

My eyes are aging. The aps-c tunnel vision type viewfinders are not a joy for me to use.

Life's short, why should I compromise ?
I could afford full frame & I bought in without cashing out of my all full frame k mount glass.

To help me afford my additional system aquistion I did not reward Hoya with K-7 or K-5 purchases at launch netting me a tidy $2900 savings. Money I spent elsewhere on brand new glass.

Pentax chooses to ignore full frame 24x36 after annoucing it in February 2001.

Thats 12 years & counting...

Pentax 6mp Digital SLR hands-on: Digital Photography Review

Since 2008 I've bought zero brand new Pentax gear.

And before anyone says it:
Pentax 645D is not an option for me.
I will not buy an $8,800 camera or $9,995 at launch when under $2,000 cameras please me.

When I bought my first brand new full frame dslr it was $1750 new, at same point in time the Pentax K-7 was $1299.
Canon 5D for me was just $451 more than Pentax very best aps-c dslr.

Back when I bought my 5D Mark II brand new for $1999 the Pentax K-5 was $1599,
so just $400 more for full frame versus the Pentax very best aps-c K-5.

Thesedays 5D Mark II has reinflated in price to $1799, up from $1599 where it was at Christmas 2012 at B&H.
I also see Pentax K-5II is $1196 & now the Canon 6D is $1899 at B&H.

These are currently a $600 & $700 premium over Pentax best aps-c dslrs, not 3x the money.

For me buying full frame dslrs did improve my photography.

I still sit on my Pentax lens treasures, originally waiting for Pentax, then Hoya Pentax, now Ricoh Pentax to offer full frame.
In the meantime I'll continue to shoot full frame via other brands.

I suspect I'll never buy another brand new smaller sensor aps-c camera from anyone so I'll never buy another brand new Pentax dslr again.

Happy Full Frame Shopping !
