For me the K-01 was the cheapest option to get this sensor. I currently have a K-7, but I want the better IQ and ISO performance. I was waiting for the new DSLR announcement, but found the K-5II/IIs was not worth the ~$450 premium over the K-5. So I was think about get a K-5 then the K-01 price dropped through the floor. For me, it was a bargain for the sensor and figured it would hold me over until the K-5 II replacement comes out. I also liked that the K-01 had focus peaking and better video. I do miss some the DSLR features; I think the second dial is what I miss the most. I really have not missed the optical view finder; I find it actually easier to compose using the screen. The K-01 has become my primary camera body and I am even considering selling the K-7. I would highly recommend it, plus the 40mm lens is an awesome value at $100.

I am debating buying the extended 2-year warranty for my K-01. I bought the camera a few weeks ago, but I believe I can still buy the warranty; reading through different forum threads it seems like people got responses from Pentax saying the extended warranty can be purchased anywhere from 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, or even 1-year after the camera. There have been a number of threads on this topic: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5/167660-just-reminder-pentax-2-...anty-19-a.html https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5/157886-k5-2-year-extended-warranty-2.html
My question, which I did not see addressed in these threads, is has anyone actually used the warranty? If so, how did it go? For $20 it is cheap insurance, but before I spend the money I want to confirm that it actually works the way it is advertised.
Another note, most credit cards will double the length of a manufacturer’s warranty (up to two years), so if your credit card does this then really this Pentax extended warranty is only adding one year (plus you get the cleaning). Even then, it is still probably worth the $20, but I want to make sure when it comes time to use it there are no surprises.

The main reason I picked Pentax originally when I started shooting with DSLRs was their lower prices. Pentax offered a better value than other brands, but with those ridiculous price increases that is no longer true. It has made me take a fresh look at alternatives. I hope that Pentax learns from the Black Friday sales that pricing is an issue. I bought a 15mm Limited that I would never have bought at MSRP and bought a K-01 a couple weeks earlier when the price dropped.

I tried the Sigma flash in manual mode with the K-01 and it works. I am still learning what power levels to use (its seems 1/64 or 1/32 produces good results inside with the flash bounced). Still, it is disappointing that the flash does not work in TTL mode.
It looks like the not saving the picture to the card was a separate issue since I have not gotten the error after changing cards.

I just spoke with Sigma customer support. The support person said that none of the Sigma flashes are compatible with the mirriorless cameras because those cameras meter differently. He said the flash should be able to be used in manual mode. I will try that is see how it goes.

I did not get the error until I tried using the flash, but I now get the error pretty regularly. I have tried formatting the SD card a couple times and still get the error. I never have had a problem with that card in another camera. Currently, I am trying a different card now to see if I have the same problem.
I have updated to 1.01.

I received my K-01 yesterday and I am generally happy with it. My biggest disappointment with the camera is my Sigma EF-500 DG Super external flash does not seem to work with it. When I have it on the camera it will only flash some of the time and when it does flash it is not exposed properly. Plus, the pictures will not save to the memory card; it gives an error. Are other people getting similar errors? If so, can someone explain why this flash would not work with the K-01, but does with a K10D, K-7, and (I believe) K-5? Has Pentax changed something? I appreciate the help.

I am looking to buy a nice circular polarizer, probably a B+W Kaeseman MCR; though, I am open to other suggestions. I am debating about what size to get. I use my Tamron 17-50mm lens probably 90% of the time, which has a 67mm filter size. All my other lenses have smaller filter diameters. I was thinking of using step up rings for these other lenses. I am debating if I want to buy a 77mm filter and use step up rings even with my 17-50mm. Buying a 77mm would likely cover any future lens I would get (something like a 70-200mm 2.8), but I don’t think I will be getting one of these lenses anytime soon. What are your experiences using step up rings? Did you buy a new hood, if so what kind? These filters are expensive, so it would be nice to only have to buy (plus carry) one. On the other hand, I am not sure I want the hassle of using step up rings on the lens I will be using a vast majority of the time; plus, I think I would have to get and carry an extra hood and lens cap. Thank you.

I am interesting in buying one or two graduated density filters. I am leaning towards getting the Hitech brand that fit in the Cokin P series holder (I already have the holder and Hitech seems to get good reviews for the money), though I am open to other suggestions. My question is, if you could only have one or two of these graduated density filters, what would you suggest? I want to get at least one graduated neutral density filter, probably the 2-stop (0.6) soft edge. The second one I was considering was a 3-stop (0.9), hard edge neutral density. Would this be a good combination? I would be using the filters for general landscape and travel photography. Thank you.

I have had my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR for about a month and a half. Overall, I am happy with lens sharpness and build quality. Though I have noticed that with my K10D, the pictures using this lens are under exposed by about half to one stop. The underexposure is pretty consistent, though most evident outside with higher apertures. I have been setting the exposure compensation to +.5 (frequently, I am still needing to increase the exposure when I am processing the pictures on the computer). I am wondering if other people have had similar problems with this lens or lenses in general. Could I have a bad copy?

I noticed that the second and fourth picture you posted are a bit dark. Have you noticed the same problem? I think I am going post this question to the forum.

I am looking to replace my 18-55mm kit lens with a one having approximately the same zoom range, but with better image quality (shaper, better color, contrast, etc.). Currently, I have a K10D, kit lens, and a DA 50-200. The 18-55mm stays on my camera 95% of the time and this level of zoom seems to work well for me. The new lens will be my every day, walk around lens; eventually I may get primes and grow my collection, but that is sometime in the future. My shooting is a mixture of indoor family style events and outdoor nature/travel photography.
I have spent a lot of time looking through this forum and other websites on possible options. Here are the ones I am currently considering (though I am open to other suggestions):
Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC SLD ELD Macro
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC IF Macro
Pentax DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL [IF]
Pentax DA 16-45mm 1:4 ED/AL
Pentax DA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 ED AL [IF] (I know this is not ~18-55mm, but if its IQ was on par with the others it would be a great choice)
Each lens seems have its positives and negatives, but all of them have the basic features that I am looking for and have got good reviews. Again, my goal to get the “best” quality lens possible in this zoom range. I realize buying 3 or 4 primes to cover the range would get me the best IQ, but cost and the hassle of changing lenses (which annoys my travel partners, particularly my wife) make buying a good zoom a better choice for now. I would appreciate input, particularly from those that have used more than one of the lenses.
Thank you.
