ME Super, unreliable shutter speed

This particular ME Super came as a "lens cap" with a lens I bought on eBay.

It's not really a "valuable" and I prefer the MX when shooting on a 135 film Pentax.
But it would be nice to attempt to save it instead of simply throwing it away. Sending it in for repair is a bit pricey though.

My ME super has the bad habit of suddenly underexposing a few frames and then go on to shoot reliable times again.

As far as I have read, there seems to be some contact issue with the ISO dial. But so far, I have not found any instructions how to fix it.

Is there a way to fix it, other than buying another one?

Everything else is working nicely but a camera I can't trust 100% is the one I leave at home.

Hypothetical - If Pentax brought out a 35mm film SLR today...

I would buy at least two, to switch between ISOs or colour and black/white.
In the last months I used my DSLR almost exclusively to "scan" negatives.

In the beginning I planned to shoot both digital and film. But since my wife stayed with digital, there is no point for me to bring the DSLR with me.

Slowly completing the look.

Gossen Lunasix F lightmeter. Now I can leave the smartphone and the DSLR at home when shooting real cameras with no built in light meter. Digital is sooo 2014

I bought something completely different. This time it is not another Pentax camera or lens.

It's a Mamiya middle format.

I did not have a banana for scale, so I used a Pentax MX instead.

Can't wait to get the first roll out of it. 5 exposures left. Digital is sooo 2014...

After a few days at the north sea coast, no other Pentaxes so far.

What was interesting though, that the major brand was Sony and the most common format was mft and bridge cameras. I thought bridge cameras were extinct.

People were more curious about the Pentax MX having no screen, the huge, bright viewfinder and being so small for full format than for being a Pentax. The most fun part to watch were their faces when swapping the lenses between the MX and the K50 without any adapters :)

K-50 still a good purchase?

Yes it is and considering the current price tag it's one of the very few occasions where the offer not only seems to be too good to be true. It really is.

Sure, there are better, newer Pentaxes available but with the same amount of money you can get a K 50 AND good glass AND a good tripod AND a set of ND filters AND a nice bag AND a few more batteries AND a few manual flashes AND Lightroom AND a bean bag AND a set of eneloop batteries AND a charger for these AND all the other usefull stuff for the camera as well.

What really makes a difference in picture quality is the lens, not just the body. And this is an investment you can take with you when, one day, you feel the need for a new camera body.

It seems to me that the Pentax K-S2 is not selling very well. Why?

What I like about the K-S2 the most is that you can get the K50 as cheap as beans.
It almost became my first Pentax, but in the end I went for the "cheaper body, more glass" option.

I agree with you, the K-S2 is a nice entry point... but so far the K 50 offers a great value for half the price.

Sigma 135 F/2.8 for my real camera, aka the Pentax with a film inside.

Cheap as Beans, sharp as Chili *

* Level of sharpness may depend on local cuisine.

how will FF improve your photography?

I don't get the hysteria about FF.
I switch my Pentaxes between APS-C (K50) and Full Frame (MX) regularly and neither of them is superior in all fields.

Other than the MX being a real camera made out of metal, glas and magic vs the K50 being only a digital toy for grownups.

I see my 35mm film photographs always as being better than the digitals, even if they are less perfect, but this is not an issue of the sensor size.

A small update.

Manual 28mm f2.8
Manual 50mm f1.9
Another manual 50mm f1.4 (for Bokeh!... and because it was cheap)
Kit lens + Tamron 70-300

Now I worry because I have more than one of the same focal length. On the other hand... I am going to buy a 50mm autofocus prime next.

Do older "film" lenses underperform on digital cameras compared with new lenses?

As a beginner my problem is rather the other way around.

Initially just for the Pentax MX, I bought a few old prime lenses recently.
But since they work on modern Pentaxes as well, I began using them on the K 50, too.

Now the 70s vintage lenses outperform my modern kit lens and the cheap 70-300 Tamron bottle.

Suddenly I need, not just want, but desperately need, better autofocus lenses for the K50.

I guess it's time to give up sex, drugs & rock'n'roll and start saving money.
Until then, the old primes work perfectly fine on the K50.

In a few years maybe we can say:
"We used Pentax after and before it was cool."

To be honest, I do not care that much about market shares, other than having a wide range of lenses and accessories available for sale.

And being different than all the others has a certain "elite" flair to it.

In the end, most important for me is, that I have found a camera I like to shoot with and that I can use the same lenses on my 78 vintage MX and the modern K50.
Being able to get into interesting photo gear discussions with random strangers is just a nice side effect.

Here in Germany it's quite easy to get 35mm film. Most photo stores have them and according to the local one down the street, the sales of film are rising again.

The K 50 is a great camera though. I love shooting my K50 even if it uses a (digital/soulless) sensor instead of real, analog film. ;)

Does a Tamron 70-300 and an old manual 50/1:1,9 prime count for an entry level LBA?

Hello Pentaxforums from Germany.

To be precise, it's +2.

After buying a Pentax K50 recently I absolutely HAD to add a Pentax MX to my collection.

Even though I love shooting people, animals and the countryside with the DSLR, taking photographs on film with the full manual MX is just like magic.

Photography can be dangerous, it seems to be more addictive than smoking or playing World Of Warcraft.

Welcome. One small warning though... I bought a K50 recently as well.
And now? I had to buy two other lenses, a Pentax MX, a new tripod, Adobe lightroom...

I had to quit drugs and rock'n'roll to afford a new film cartridge each day for the MX...

Send help!
(... in form of film. Black and white preferred)

That's easy.
Pentax MX and 50mm prime lens.

In case of a zombie apocalypse I can use it as a blunt weapon, built a shelter with it and still take pictures afterwards.

And in case of an atomic apocalypse the MX will survive the EMP shock as well.

Conclusion? The MX will still be working when all electronic DSLRs have long since failed. When I can have just one camera, I want it to last.
