I found the problem, while carrying it on my bike the vibrations turned out the center focal piece on the rear and it fell out.
It was loose! - cleaned up and tightened it in and the picture quality is fab!

As it happens I am, cycling across coast to coast, but I end in 8 days.
Bought a 18-55 WR to compare against.

The guy I bought it from seems genuine, he says he's had it since new and it's not been opened. I can't see any marks on the screws either so I'm inclined to agree. I've ordered a 18-55 WR to compare with...

Every time I buy something secondhand from an American I get ****ed over. :hmm:
Last image was at F10, but sure, it's no good.
What is odd is I can move my head/eye a bit left or right in the viewfinder and the particular side sharpens up.

This one is at F10 (look at the railings again). At F16 things start to become more universally sharp, but I can't be shooting at F16+ with movement. :)

Ok, so here's the first, but not showing the problem cropped. It's rather evident even on this one.
F6.8.
I've also noticed that the sides are not in focus on the viewfinder unless I move my head position and look at the sides at an angle. Could it be the K30? I guess I need another lens to find out...

Hallo!
It's not been damaged, it's condition is mint.
I believe you're right, it's a cheap lens, but time has given it a reputation of being better built 'back in the day' than current models. I don't think it's true at all, it's not sharp enough even for 16mpx.
Perhaps a Tamron 17-50 next...

Hi,
I've just picked up one of these lenses for my K30. It's in mint condition but experiences a focal issue whereby either the center is in focus and the corners are not, or the opposite!
It's worse at lower apertures but noticeable even at F8. Anyone know if this irregular sharpness is a common theme with this lens?
