Pentax K20D Parts

I need to buy a replacement bottom plate for my K20D as well as some screws that go with it. Anybody know where I can get these replacement parts, other than e-bay? It would be nice to see a diagram of the parts as they are arranged so I know what I need to order.

Thanks!

K20D cracked at tripod mount

I found 13 screws - actually 12 since the one at the crack (see 4 in the drawing) was missing - then I got the bottom off easily.

I found no evidence of a seal of any kind. Also, the aluminum 1/4 - 20 tripod mount simply fell out when I opened the bottom. It appears that it was not attached to the metal frame inside, unless all four tiny screws tore loose upon impact when the bottom was cracked. No screws shook out when I tried "dumping out" the bottom of the camera body. Maybe they fell onto the floor when I took the bottom off. At 10X magnification I could not see any damage to the 4 screws that should have held the tripod mount on.

Two things, (1) where do I go online for a new bottom plate and (2) can I order the 4 + 1 replacement screws?

The camera was attached to a fairly heavy tripod when the tripod strap came loose and the camera hit the ground, hard. I've used it with a bulge and crack near the tripod mount for months. I am careful not to rip the whole thing apart though.

I have read that one can remove the bottom of this camera, however, after taking out the only 6 little screws I can see on the bottom, the only part that I can get to move is the corner near the battery door - and that's only when I pull on that door. I am afraid to pry or pull hard in fear that I'll really mess something up.

Does anyone have experience with replacing the bottom plate themselves? Would be nice to have a YouTube video of someone doing it. Is there a screw hidden anywhere?

I sure would like a link for ordering that part.

Thanks!

Thematic The Birefringence Thread

Hello all. I spent January and February accumulating images and working on technique before I created a website to display my work. A lot of pain out in the cold garage. I prefer to work w/o gloves. Same thing when photographing snowflakes.

Instructions of how I did to take these types of pictures can be found at my new website. There is also a gallery of cell phone images that were recorded on my cell phone. In that case I used the polarizing filters popped out of a single pair of Real 3D glasses. Then there is a gallery of my SLR stuff using quality filters. --> F 16 - Photography by Tom Wagner - Colors in Ice!

Macro The Glorious Birefringence of Thin Ice

Hello all. This is the first time I've posted a picture on this forum. I've been using Pentax equipment since my first SLR in 1969. I figured now would be a good time to show some of my work because I have finally finished 2 months of freezing my butt off while refining my technique of photographing the "birefringence" of thin layers of ordinary water ice - out in my cold garage - at night. :)

I discovered that thin ice was incredibly birefringent after first checking to see if the ice crystals in frozen bubbles was. The crystals in the wall of the solid bubbles turned out to be too thin. The ice in a snowflake is also too thin, I discovered. So I made a puddle of ice on glass and checked it out. Man, was I amazed at what I saw!

After making a small change in my snowflake photographing rig I started taking macro shots of this beautiful phenomenon. I occasionally used focus stacking to increase the depth of field given that I was using f 8 for acceptable diffraction.

Attached are a few of the images. If you would like to see a lot more feel free to visit my new blog. In the blog I provide a lot of information about the procedure - even how to grab good shots using a cell phone camera and the two filters taken from a pair of Real 3D glasses.

Does the Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module work with the astrotracer feature, or any other feature, when attached to a Pentax K-20D and the K5 IIs?

How about the Pentax Waterproof Infrared Remote Control B&H # PERCWP Mfr # 39892, does that work with either or both the Pentax K-20D and the K5 IIs?

Thanks a lot for the reply. I can build an adjustable time delay using a 555 chip and an SCR. I would have to adjust it to fire the flash at the correct time. For now I'll stick with my manual lens setting.

Optical Slave vs. the A on the Aperture Setting

My goal: use an old Vivitar 283 with variable power adapter as a second flash via an optical remote.

I'm using a K20 pop-up flash as the master flash. My primary lens is a Pentax 100 macro bought new in1985.

When I have the aperture on manual, not on A, both flashes contribute to the exposure. However, if I set the macro on A, both flashes still go off but the image is always dimly lit. That would not be a critical problem but I would like to use the same slave flash with the new Pentax lens I got with my K20. When I use the new lens and the slave flash, the image always comes out dark, no mater what settings I have used on the camera, so far.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe

I would like to use my old Vivitar flashes with my K20 D. I see that I can buy a voltage reducer. The Wein SSHSHS Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe comes up the most on a Google search. I have read that there are different Wein versions that lower the voltage different amounts and that Wein is not forthcoming when it comes to specs.

(1) What is your solution?

(2) Has anyone safely used a Vivitar 283 with a Pentax digital camera, with or w/o the votage protection?

(3) What are the drawbacks of the Wein unit?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for the advice!

My friend lives in a small town which no longer has the camera store that provided the services she had them do before and called me to see if I could help. I am out of a job and she offered to pay me for my work. I have a good camera, a Pentax 50 mm macro-lens and a light box. I do have a scanner already but have no plans of spending more $ on another one that will scan negatives since I can do the work easily with what I have.

10 mp is what I'll use.

Thanks again!

I have been asked by a friend to make a bunch of old 120 negatives (almost all B&W) into digital positives that she can have printed. She wants to be able to go to 8 x 10 inches w/o cropping.

I am using ISO 100. What I would like to know is, what settings in my K20D should I use to match the resolution of the processors that are used to make prints at Wal-Mart and Walgreens and such? Again, she does not plan to crop or go above 8 x 10's.

I find that big files slow my computer down when using Photoshop etc. and since I have so many to work with, I need to save time. [I definitely need more RAM] I suspect that giant files would take more time to look through on her end as well.

Thanks!

Converting a Negative to a Positive

Thanks all. About the problem with the orange mask in color negs, I once dealt with that when an industrial photographer. I was trying to make a color paper negative using photographic paper then use that to make a color positive on the same type of paper. I almost gave up on getting the colors right, but then I thought of adding the film's orange tone to the color paper neg. Then it worked! That was a Eureka moment for me.

I have a Pentax K20D and am not sure whether I have located, in the manual, info about a feature that will allow me to convert a close-up picture I take of a film negative into a positive. I'm primarily thinking about B&W. Can this model do that?

I have Adobe Photoshop CS2 as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Lenses w/o an A - how to get the shutter working

I want to use my K20D to "try" to capture some meteors tonight. I put my old Vivitar Series-1, f 1.9, 28 mm on the camera but cannot get the shutter to go off, even on manual. I find the instructions having to do with this are not user friendly because of all the insets between ( ) stuck here and there and everywhere. Very hard to make sense of it.

Please help.

Thanks!

Shake reduction not on?

I accidentally discovered what I did to make that weird lag time preview view. It's the "live view". When I turned the ring around the shutter release button as far as it would go I got the live view and didn't know it.

Shake reduction not on?

On page 15 in the manual I read "The camera may generate some operating noise when it is shaken, such as when changing the composition of a picture." I did hear an obvious noise when I first turned on the shake reduction and looked through a telephoto lens. I assumed that was the noise they mentioned in the manual.

I thought I had the autofocus turned off but maybe that was the sound I heard. I just read on the Net that the shake reduction is smooth and instantaneous. [I see in the last post that an answer came in while I was typing this reply.]

I also remember seeing a noticeable difference in the viewfinder image when I had the SR on vs. off when using the 200 mm fl on my lens. It was like what I've seen when using image stabilized binoculars. There seemed to be a little lag between the time I moved the camera and when the image moved.

Does anyone else see the difference in the view finder between SR on vs off? I just want to make sure everything is working.

Hello,

I found this forum :) while looking for an answer to my question. I just opened a Pentax K20D I purchased via mail order and tried fiddling with it. I attached the 18-200 zoom and turned on the shake reduction. It made the expected noise and definitely helped in the 200 mm mode as I pointed it at the window.

I tried it again just now inside and out with various zoom settings and do not hear that it's on nor see any difference when I turn it to on.

Am I missing something? Had I not heard it the 1st time I would not have known what I'm missing.

Thanks!

Tom
