K3ii replacement

I've been a loyal DSLR Pentax fan for the last 10 plus years but I must admit I do sometimes get impatient by the very long interval between updates to the Pentax cropped sensor flagship. To date I've shot with the K-10, the K-7, & I now have the K-5 & K-3. I know some will disagree, but to me the K-3ii seems like a fairly minor tweak rather than a significant upgrade from the K-3.
However, my dilemma is that I'm far too heavily invested in my Pentax kit to make the switch without seriously considering the jump. As a serious enthusiast, I have most of the lenses I want. I've carefully upgraded with the best glass I can afford by generally buying slightly used bargains each time I was in the market. On my present budget the idea of jumping ship sounds almost depressing.
However, when you consider that the K-3 came out in October of 2013 with no monumental upgrade since other than the K-1, staying with Pentax is also frustrating. Perhaps I will eventually move to the K-1, but the cropped sensor is sufficient for me as I rarely do really big enlargements & I don't often heavily crop my pictures. In addition the frame rate of the K-1 is slow in comparison & from what I've read the focus speed isn't appreciably better.

I don't get it. If you don't like the pop up flash on a camera like the K-3 don't use it. But even some of us who are pretty serious photographers simply don't always want to carry an external flash and in those situations the little pop up comes in really handy. I have a nice external flash and if I'm shooting a wedding or taking lots of flash pictures I will use it, but on other occasions the pop up is great. I cannot imagine anyone not buying a K-1 or K-3 II because it has a pop up, but there will be a few of us who will seriously consider not upgrading to a camera that doesn't have this nice little convenience.

i typically buy at about this point in the camera timeline. It typically means a new flagship is on the horizon, but it also normally means the current flagship becomes an incredible bargain just before it's replaced. If you can handle not buying the very latest which is on the horizon, the current Pentax flagship is around 50% of what it was when it was introduced around 18 months earlier.

This shot was taken at the zoo in St. Louis, Missouri in their Butterfly House on March 7, 2011. I think the shot demonstrates the complimentary colors theme of this month's contest.

I'm a serious amateur and I agree. While there is no doubt that FF sensors deliver more, they are simply too expensive for what they offer, at least at present for most photographers.

I've put together my kit based upon the 1.5 crop factor. I love being able to use my 70-200 F2.8 lens at an equivalent 300 mm length. I love being able to use my 70-300 at an equivalent 450 mm length. While I recognize the limitation on the wide angle end, for me, my 10-20 which still shoots at 15mm is very sufficient. At some point I want to buy an even stronger telephoto in the 500 mm range and I will want the lens to reach an equivalent 750 mm.

Finally, even if I could afford a FF camera, which I presently can't, I don't want to have to go out and buy new glass for a larger sensor camera. Some of my glass would work on a FF, I try to buy it that way when I can, but there would still be major gaps which I would have to fill. As an amateur I could not justify the extra expense of a new camera and new glass at the same time.

Maybe image quality would improve so much that most photographers would recognize a huge advantage, but I doubt it for most of us.

New K7 prices coming down?

Brian, both are great cameras, but they are great in different ways. I own the K-7 and don't think I would be satisfied with the D-90 because I'm used to the great feel and build of Pentax's flagship cameras. In comparison the D-90 feels sort of like a toy, but a very good toy. The D-90 also does a great job, and it's ISO performance is very superior to the ISO performance of the K-7.

I would encourage you to look at the long term picture if this is your first DSLR. Which system best fits the way you are going to shoot pictures? If you like the larger and more flexible Nikon system, then you should go with the D-90. If on the other hand you like getting the maxiumum bang for your buck and the unique character and superior quality of Pentax's flagship cameras, you will probably be happier longterm with the K-7, but remember, you're not just buying a camera with a single lens attached, you are buying into a system. Once you have several lenses its not practical for most photographers to switch systems even if they decide another system better fits their shooting style.

I assume you have shot with both cameras. If you haven't you need to try to find a camera shop and pick up both and fire off a few frames. If you do that, I think it's likely you will end up with the K-7, but either way, it will likely confirm your choice of what's the right camera and system for you.

I hope you will inform those of us who have responded to your query what you ultimately decide to do and whether you are satisfied with your choice.

It doesn't look like any of us are actually commenting on your original question of whether the K-7 will drop in price after Christmas. I suspect it will drop a little bit, but I don't believe it will drop dramatically because there's already a lot of price difference between the K-5 and the K-7.

Best wishes for your future photo happiness! :)
