CP+ is coming up in about a month. If their goal was to get us talking, they've succeeded.

One thing is for sure: there will be a new camera. Further details are pure speculation :)

@Adam - how you coming on that mass Prozac purchase for all the sad sacks out there?

Never seen such eagerness to interpret the worst case scenario.

Is it the cold getting to everyone? Cooped up inside with "nothing" to do?

Again, since basically anyone posting anything here knows nothing, I'll take the positive twist instead of the negative twist. We know there's a new DA* 11-18. We know that the IQ of the KP is great. We know that there is a demand for a new APS-C flagship. We know that prices on existing cameras have been moving down, which in turn leaves a spot for a new top of the line entry, and we know that we're only a month out from a show that historically has brought good news, and finally, how many of us had a clue about the KP prior to the announcement it existed?

Time to go take some pictures while chilling out and wait and see what happens in a month. Then respective parties can either jump for joy or jump off the cliff, but until then, we just don't know what the future holds.

Sure wish I had seen this earlier, but I guess I was busy running my mouth over in the Lounge and drinking all that free liquor while smoking those big fat cigars.....and missed an opportunity to show my little wrapped package. :(

I guess you can't do "Write In" votes here......but if you want, you can just give old Rupert a thumbs up for his "Shop Spider". That will be good enough for me! :D

BTW- Otis liked #2 best....who would have ever though Otis would pick a naked girl?

With the Ricoh acquisition, Pentax has got to be at some sort of a transition point, right? They're wrapping up the hoya-funded models (kr, k5, k-01, whatever replaces the K5/Kr) and then Ricoh will come on board. And, to be quite honest, nobody knows what they are thinking- for all we know, they could be funding a more complete product lineup as we speak!

On the business side, It might be worthwhile for Pentax to come out with just a full frame body. Since many of the people who would buy a Pentax full frame are those with old Pentax lenses, they could make the body a limited edition type deal. That way they could avoid having to come out with a bunch of full frame lenses to begin with. Then they could work some D-FA lenses into the lineup if the body was selling successfully enough.

I do not think Pentax will capture many Canon or Nikon full frame shooters (good brand recognition and they have good cameras). I believe this strategy would allow them to cater to those who have Pentax equipment and want a full frame body (Decently few people), while avoiding a large investment in lenses.

As a side note. You should also provide a price range that people would be willing to pay for a full frame body in the survey Adam is creating. I have a feeling that there are people intrigued by the thought of a full frame camera, but would only be willing to spend ~$1,500 on one. In Pentaxe's view, these people will not count (I believe a Pentax full frame would be significantly more than that). Then there are those who would pay $2,500 - $3,000 for one. These will be the people who actually purchase a full frame body. I do not think you can lump these people together and still have a legitimate survey that Pentax will listen to (yes, I think those that would at $1,500 outnumber those that would pay $2,500 - $3,000).

Camera Review
Before I begin I would like it to be known that I have never written a review for anything before today, so my views on the K5 are anything but professional. So, with my credentials taken care of, I’ll start by saying that I have been shooting with a Pentax camera since 1976, and I am, overall, quite pleased with their performance for the type of shooting that I do.:) Having said that, there always seems to be one or two things we would like to see improved and the new K5 is no exception. This review will cover four things that I would like to talk about with respect to the current design, as well as a one item that I would like to see in future models. (The wish list.) The first three items are minor pet peeves while the forth topic involves the stunningly spectacular clarity of photos shot at higher ISO settings using available room lighting. So let’s move on to item one.

My first DSLR was the Pentax K10 and the first thing I noticed was that they removed the tiny locking button that had to be pressed down in order to turn the control knob on the top left side of the camera. This was something that I hated with my old film cameras and I wasn’t sorry to see it go. :(Unfortunately however, I see that it has found its way back into the design on my K7 and K5. I can’t for the life of me figure out how anybody can mistakenly turn that knob without noticing it. If anybody can figure out a way to remove that pesky button without doing harm to the camera please let me know. Let’s move on to item two shall we.

The shutter release button is another item worth mentioning that I think can use a little improving with respect to its overly sensitive nature, both on the body, and the optional battery grip. I found my baby finger would sometimes brush against the shutter release button on the battery grip while I was holding the camera and viewing the photos I had taken, thus kicking me out of view mode assuming that I was preparing to take another picture. It seems that just the slightest touch would activate it. This was also the case with the K7. The shutter release button seems almost cheap and flimsy when compared to my K10 which seemed to have the perfect balance and feel. Hopefully Pentax will do a rethink on this one and bring it up to the same standard as the K10. On to item three.

While this item may not seem important to most people, I think for those of us that shoot a lot of night photography would agree with the need to have a way of turning off the viewing screen on the back of the camera without using the shutter release button. Perhaps they could include some coding in a firmware update that would allow a person to press and hold the picture preview button for one second to turn it off, and a second press of the button to turn it back on again. A quick press after that would put the user back into regular preview mode. Just a thought. Now on to item four.

The improvements that Pentax has made with respect to the sensor and its ability to shoot at higher ISO settings is nothing short of remarkable and in my view makes this camera a winner. Without getting into any technical jargon, of which I would have absolutely no idea of what I was talking about, I can only show you what I mean. Upon arriving home from the camera store with my new K5, I unpacked it and placed a fresh battery from my K7 into the K5 and began to shoot my cat which just happened to be sitting on a chair in my office. These photos were shot hand held with available room light only. To say I was really impressed would be a huge understatement at best. Anyone who does a lot of low light or night photography will want to own the new K5. I have uploaded some images to my own site for anyone that wants to view them. Just follow the link at the end of this review. Images are 94% of their original size with a jpg compression ratio of 75%. Let’s move on to the wish list.

One aspect of photography that I like to explore is “looking up”. I’m not just talking about looking up at the sky; I want to know what things look like if I were an ant. I purchased used Nikon coolpix 8800 with a flip out rotating screen for that very reason. The ability to look up from the ground is something I would like to see in future Pentax models. Click here to see what I’m talking about.

I can’t give the K5 a ten rating for items mentioned above but I will give it a strong nine. If you don’t have one, buy one.

K-7 JPEG Quality four stars vs. three stars

PentaxRev,
Your message contains many queries/questions.

* To view the RAW files, use Pentax Digital Camera Utility (PDCU). In PDCU, you can convert any RAW photo into JPEG.

* PDCU is free with your K-7 and it will allow some simple, easy post-processing (PP).

* If you wish to save the highest resolution file and get some smaller files to manipulate at the same time, the RAW+ is the best option.

* I shoot JPEG only. I tried all JPEG file sizes and star resolutions for several test cases. After many trials:
(a) I chose 14 Mp 2 stars. The 14 Mp gives me the full resolution of the sensor while the 2 stars [**] yield a reasonable file size. Like you I have a 16 Gb card and I do not want to fill it up when I travel.

(b) at 14 and 6 Mp, I see little difference, if none, between 3 stars and 4 stars JPEG.

I hope that the comments will help....

In PDCU you can select all and convert all at once with the same settings - unattended while you go out to dinner. Tweak the ones that need it.

In Elements, go File > Process Multiple Images, and it will ask for the directory to do, among other things.

K-5: 16MP, ISO25600 and 7 FPS worth the upgrade?

25,600 ISO? WTH? I keep thinking of a camera club member who asked me how I got good color in my slides. I told him, "I used to try to shoot everything hand-held, but when I checked the specs of the pictures I admired, they had all been shot from a tripod using much slower film than I was using. So I bit the bullet, loaded slower/sharper film in my camera, and shot everything off of a tripod. I also started getting up earlier in the morning so I could be out in position when the good light hit." He snorted and said, "I don't get out of bed before 10am! And I HATE using tripods! But I still don't understand why your pictures better color than mine." :hmm:
