Pentax Hacks?

I don't think that the risk of your camera "catching a virus" will dramatically increase. There is always a possibility that someone have hacked the official Pentax-site and replaced the firmware-files with "tainted" ones. Or if you (or someone else...) are naive enough to download "official firmware" form a non-official site.

As a programmer and complete geek/nerd I would absolutely love to be able to customize the functionality of my (future...) DSLR as much as possible (There's no big problems with the original functionality, but why settle with that?).

Personally I wouldn't install a 3rd-party firmware, if it wasn't open source. For the first, I would want to be able to perhaps add my own functionality etc. Second, with open source, the firmware is much more unlikely to contain malicious code (with the exception of what I mentioned at the beginning of the post).

When it comes to future features, it would be nice to see a FF-body, but I think there's a lot of other improvements/functionality that could attract more users.
Bluetooth would be nice, and a way to do tethered shooting without the tether.
But I am a bit reserved to the idea of WLAN in a camera, I guess it could be useful to upload the images to a server as you take them. But there's Eye-Fi that lets you do that, without opening up other camera-functionality to "the world".
Besides, adding WLAN would probably add both weight & size and also more to the price (I don't think a higher price would justify the usefulness of WLAN).

What I would what to see is more customization (on a more basic level that the 3rd-party firmware would do: meaning, be able to change what certain buttons do, a "start-up screen", password-protection etc).
A better Live-View (according to the reviews I've read on K20D, the LV is poorly done and has nothing on other, competing, models. Correct me if I'm wrong).
Video-recording (Full HD). Yeah, it's debatable if it has it's place in a DSLR (and certainly in a camera such as K20D), BUT it's getting more and more common and a sought-after feature and a big selling-point...
The list could be made long...

If someone would happen to find a project that is aiming to create a open firmware for Pentax, I would be thankful if you could bring it to my attention (either a PM or simply a thread), as I would love to help out with the developing.

As a last note/reflection: It would actually be interesting if someone managed to create a virus for Pentax cameras. Why? Well that means that they would have found how to interact with the cameras hardware/existing firmware that could be used when developing a "good firmware". ;?)

Sorry for a long post, but you were warned...

Thanks

Absolutely true. But both a hand driven lawn mower and a motorized one are tools made for the same task. But I rather use a motorized lawn mower as it helps me do the job more efficient and with less effort (plus we have a quite large lawn), but it's still up to me to use it correctly.

Both Canon and Nikon make great cameras (and I would actually buy the Nikon D700 or a Canon Pro-model, if I could afford one...). After doing my research I found that the K20D is the tool that simply fits my preferences (how I would design menus etc) most. As I'm a programmer/software developer I think I'm more picky about how I interact with the camera (I would actually rather write my own firmware, but I have other projects with higher prio ;?).

Besides both my friend and I dislike Microsoft (He's a Apple fan/dealer, I'm a Linux fan) so I need something else to disagree with him about. As he is a huge Nikon fan and the first DSLR I used was a Canon, we started "argue" about that, but it's all for fun.

*Back to "work"* (I try to find some nice pictures of my town later... :?)

Just wanted to say hi to everyone and introduce myself...

I'm a happy (far from "normal") guy from a "little" city in the west of Sweden called Lidköping (a nice harbour city divided by the outlet of the small river Lidan into Europe's largest lake: Vänern). I'm trying to run a web-business and have photography as both a large hobby and something that I'm offering for my clients.

Up till a year ago I didn't know much about (D)SLR's, even thought I did take a basic photography-course in high school and has always had it as a big interest. Then I borrowed my neighbor's Canon 400D (a great camera for "newbies"), as with everything else I get my hands on, I learned all that I could about the camera (I knew more about the cameras after a week than the owners knew after a couple of months), DSRL's in general (including aperture etc) and different shooting styles & techniques. I also developed a great interest in the "strobist way".
In the beginning of this year I got to borrow my friends K10D and was hooked (despite some of my friends repeating "mantra" that Nikon is the king). I've read and watched a lot of reviews (a lot of cameralabs.com) etc and tried to learn as much as I could about different cameras and kits.
I have settled for a Pentax K20D as I think that matches what I want/need the most for the right price.

I love (and "practice") all areas of photography: macros, portraits, landscape etc etc.

That was all from/about me for now..
I wish you all the best.
Now I'm going to sleep.

p.s. I wonder how many actually read all that :?) ds

K10d and extension tubes

When using extension tubes (or "fully manual lenses") you need to make sure that an (custom?) option called something with "Aperture Ring" is enabled.
I can't remember exactly what it is called, I borrowed a K10D (and I don't have my own Pentax, yet) a while back and when I mounted an old/fully manual lens, it wouldn't take any pictures. I remember reading something on the net about it and just went through the menus and found it...
After that it worked fine, except that the camera didn't showed/record the aperture.

It also cured the problems my friend had when using extension tubes (same symptom) (funny enough, the salesmen who soled him the camera didn't know about this).

This will of course not fix the problem with setting the aperture on that lens, but if you are lucky the "default" is the largest aperture (The aperture will still close when taking a picture, as that's an mechanical system [the extension tubes should transfer it out to the lens...])

Hope that helps! :?)
