if you really want to do time lapse. Get the Canon TC-80N3 Remote control, and modify the end with the right connection: This will work with the K10 or K20 Digital SLR Astronomical Imaging

also ...
Here is the approximate lighting setup that I used for this shot:
The key light is a 540 and the two background lights are 360's. Fired from the on camera flash.

Code - The only problem is, your background isn't 255 white (in fact you have a slight magenta cast). Which might be fine for your purposes, but if you truly want a white background, you would need more light on it. Or you could get rid of the background in photoshop.
Thrisytee - Your light ratio's are off. Keep experimenting.
Here is a recent white background shot that I have done:

just read about the vivitar QC issues. That is really a bummer if it is true. I have owned that flash in the past, and it was a work horse.....

I would get a handfull of Vivitar 285 flashes (about $90 each). And then some cactus triggers.
IMHO you don't want to be messing around with PTTL with multiple flashes. You generally want to set the flashes up completely manual, and your camera as well. Then you can get predictable results.
For now though, you can use the 540 off camera in wireless mode completely manual.
FWIW - I have 2 360's and 1 540. The 540 is nice for on-camera work. For that I almost always use P-TTL. But again, for strobist work, manual is the way to go, and a 540 manual isn't really different than any other flash in manual (power being equal)...
Hope this helps.

The long duration timelapse's I am looking at doing will quite likely fire off 10,000 exposures. I am only doing a couple, but it definitely makes me aware of the shutter life.
thanks

egordon99 - I do have the 12-24 already. I am going to shoot some tests next week, although the lighting will quite likely be different come june, but I can get close. I will test more as the time comes, but next week I am mainly testing framing (since I will have the scissor lift for 1 day).
ThorThum- Thank you, that was helpful. Do you think using a flash or strobe (or multiple) is even an option (without having 100 strobes firing)?? And the shoot will be at about 3:30 in the afternoon, but unfortunately that will still be mid day in June.
thanks

What is the shutter life rating on the K10/K20?
I am going to be doing a project involving shooting some long duration time-lapse's and am wondering how well the shutter will hold up.
thanks

I wouldn't have any problem using the ND.. there pretty straightforward. But I definitely want to keep things simple...
It sounds like it won't be necessary to use the ND. I just didn't want to have to close the lens way down. I just got the 12-24, so I don't have much experience shooting with it (outdoors in bright sunlight).

F/8 because I want to be in the sweet spot of the Pentax 12-24. And that would give me a nice long DOF for a group this large. (Would you suggest a different apperture?)
I am going to be on a Scissor lift.
I guess maybe an ND filter won't be necessary to get teh exposure I want, which is precisely why I posed the question. Thank you all!!!

I posted earlier about doing an outdoor group shot of 250 people at my work. In thinking about this, I think that I will probably need to use an ND Filter to get my exposure in the f/8 range. I don't want to drop the $$ on a Singh Ray varuable ND filter, so what would you recommend? I was thinking an ND 0.9 (which will give me a 3 stop drop)?? Am also thinking about using a Cir Polarizer...
This is going to be shot at about 3:00-4:00 PM in Colorado this June. So it (should) be very sunny and bright. (Dealing with Shadows is going to be a whole different discussion...)
Thank you.
