I don't think the mono makes sense for you. Many of those who have it have other color cameras, often more than one. I can very often get as good if not better results converting, and I have an IR camera, which is often even better for monochrome for some use cases. So it's like of like committing to an expensive prime rather then using an excellent zoom that might cover the same focal length. A nice thing, but not a necessity most of the time. If you're on the fence, get the non mono.

Here are two recent shots, one with the K-3Mono with an orange filter, and another with an IR full spectrum conversion with a 780nm filter, converted to BW. Darker sky, and the grasses in the valley show up lighter. Carrizo Plain, btw.

I would think filters below say 780nm or so would be rather worthless on a monochrome; they'd work more like NDs. We use those with full spectrum converted cameras to selectively add in some color, not just luminance.
TBH I really wouldn't bother messing with IR with the K-3Mono. As noted, the results are only ever going to be meh, and a mirrorless is a better choice anyway. And you really don't gain much with a monochrome sensor, except in astro. But if using the K-3Mono is fun, then one would have fun with a properly converted full spectrum camera. Like monochrome it's another way of seeing in different light, but with more variation. And it's more extreme, especially in the UV or IR only parts of the spectrum. I recently shot on a trip with both the Pentax and an IR Canon, but I don't think I have side by side comparisons, since I use them in different conditions. But I'd have gotten similar results to those already shown.

My local bridge. With the raw I can zoom in and actually just about read that sign up there on the span. Amazing. 50mm FA 2.8 macro lens.

My download per the above link had a 2.40 name, but in fact it was the 2.41 when I went to install it. Worked fine.

I don't see Pentax/Ricoh doing a half frame. Too tough for the target market re processing I'd expect. No advantage. Nor a 110, much as I liked those.
I thought in earlier info they strongly hinted it would come with a non interchangeable lens? so not sure why there was some talk re an SLR. But I confess I haven't been keeping up.

I've found some issues with trying merged HDR as well. Not sure why. But then again I noticed that with the default auto adjust button in Lr I got much worse than usual results, so perhaps Lr just doesn't get it. I'm wondering if there are some BW profiles I might try that would be better.
What does work in Lr though is the HDR button, at least if one has a diplayHDR capable display. Being able to pop out highlights up to four stops can do some amazing things with this great camera, since luminance differences are so prominent in BW. I can't show it here, but I've got some shots with tiny little roofs way off on the horizon that are some much more prominent in HDR, and that can make the whole image better since it draws the viewer much further into the scene. And the cloud detail that can be recovered from highlights is amazing.

The test scenes showed more difference than I thought they would. Good argument for the camera above and beyond the experience. Has a nice grain appearance too. I have to admit I would have liked an articulating screen too, but that's a minor quibble.

Not that many here on this Pentax enthusiast site have a 645 camera. Even though one can be had for about the price of a K-3iii Monochrome. Given that, why would anyone think there's a market for a new version of it at what would probably be a much higher price than a GFX? If they hardly sell even at a big discount? I have a 645Z and I am not very interested in an upgrade, although I'd love to see one. I just don't think numbers are there. Might be even worse in Japan.
I don't even think there's much of a use case for the GFX cameras; the advantages of that bigger sensor are dwarfed by the advantages of the full frame flagships. Sure, there's a niche. But it's a small one. Very small. Even smaller than monochrome I'd guess.

Yes, that's exhibit A in how a product can cannibalize sales of one's other products. I would guess Pentax/Ricoh were aware of that, and probably new when they went into full frame that the 645 path wasn't going to continue.
I do think the 645Z is a far better system than the K-1ii (owning both), but it depends on what one does. I suspect the K-1's are at the end of their line too, perhaps. Tough to compete with all the ones out there now, and I'm not sure an OVF is enough to save it. The K3's might be more viable. But we'll see.

Consider that the 645Z is now going for $4000 at BH, a whopping discount. Very good to mint used ones are under $3000. I just don't see how any new one could be developed to sell for less and compete with Fujis, whose 50S ii sells for $3200 new.
OTOH, that sensor in the 645Z is one of the best ever made IMHO, and although it's not the last word on quality it's still topping the charts over at DxO, for what that's worth. Pentax is probably still selling some of their 845 lenses new to Fuji owners, and I'd love to see them make say the 35mm into a tilt shift for the K mount, although you can do that now with a Fotodiox Rokr adapter.
I love the camera; I'd love to see a successor but not sure it's worth it vs K-1 development.

I'm curious about availability of the K-3iii monochrome (k'mono? :) , specifically in the USA.
I sent an email to Adorama, who has the color Pentaxes, and they suggested I call. The rep I reached said there was "no indication" they would have presales, after asking if I saw it on the website. Same response when I asked if they would carry it all. Not sure what that means.
Are we going to be limited to direct orders in the USA?

Great idea; more useful than just a JPEG histogram or blinkies.
I'd also request they add the snap (zone) focus features from the Ricoh GR. The priority, the display of hyperfocal distance, and the half button, full button option for it. In fact, I'd love that on all Pentaxes.

So the red (well, red's wavelength) sort of results in a defocused edge, right? If so, then maybe less obvious then with a color sensor, and just a softer edge like after corrected. Or am I off base? I seem to recall that when using color filters with mono astro cameras there was a need to refocus, but I wasn't the one doing it.

Anyone ever do night landscape with a monochrome camera? I know monochrome astro cameras are quite common, but I'm curious about Milky Way and landscape shots, not deep sky. I would think it would be quite nice to have, but haven't seen examples except for the dedicated astro cameras. How much better would it work with Astrotracer? ie, could you get away with even longer exposures, enough of a significant difference over color?

Loved the video. I think his very personal take on it, and why he liked the experience of using a Pentax, would resonate with most of us here. The bit about the old lens he still uses from his film days, even though he's moved on to other camera brands, is probably a pretty common experience. Worth watching even if not in the market for the monochrome.

Nice video; thanks.
I have some little clip on reflective tags; hunters use them to mark paths they can follow with lights set at their lowest settings. I hang them on say a remote flash or something so I can find without using my flashlight on bright. Search for "reflective trail markers" at your favorite source. There are also reflective tacks, but not as useful...although somebody probably has done a creative night shot with them.

I agree with these. I can't tell the difference. And with my K-1ii I don't use HH pixel shift either. Most any PS stuff I do is going to be on a tripod anyway. I though DP's NR kvetching was nuts then and still do. Here's another point of view, for the K-1ii in use in astro, where noise is obviously an issue: Pentax K-1 Mark II Astrophotography Review – Lonely Speck Bottom line, they seem to be more concerned with the theoretical point of NR in raws (which is more common now) than actual results.

Will there be enough of those to make DSLRs viable? I'm not sure.
And would it be enough to make continued development of DSLRs viable? I could see Pentax hoarding parts and continuing to churn out "new" K-1ii's for a long time and make a decent little profit. They already sort of do that with the almost decade old 645Z. And their latest "new" camera seems a very minor update. But new features? maybe not. But that might be OK, if dooming one to meh profits for the foreseeable future. Maybe Ricoh is fine with that.

Heh. Pentax's best strategy might be to come up with some new coatings and adapters so they can sell those 645 lenses to GFX owners.
I just got a very nice Fotodiox RKR TLT tilt shift adaper to use with 645 and Canon RF. Works really well. They also have an interesting adapter that rotates a 645 around in four steps so you can stitch the resulting shots easily on a non MF camera, leveraging the bigger image circle to get a big MF-ish pano image.
