Here are two recent shots, one with the K-3Mono with an orange filter, and another with an IR full spectrum conversion with a 780nm filter, converted to BW. Darker sky, and the grasses in the valley show up lighter. Carrizo Plain, btw.

Using Color Filters with the K-3iii Monochrome

I've found some issues with trying merged HDR as well. Not sure why. But then again I noticed that with the default auto adjust button in Lr I got much worse than usual results, so perhaps Lr just doesn't get it. I'm wondering if there are some BW profiles I might try that would be better.

What does work in Lr though is the HDR button, at least if one has a diplayHDR capable display. Being able to pop out highlights up to four stops can do some amazing things with this great camera, since luminance differences are so prominent in BW. I can't show it here, but I've got some shots with tiny little roofs way off on the horizon that are some much more prominent in HDR, and that can make the whole image better since it draws the viewer much further into the scene. And the cloud detail that can be recovered from highlights is amazing.

The test scenes showed more difference than I thought they would. Good argument for the camera above and beyond the experience. Has a nice grain appearance too. I have to admit I would have liked an articulating screen too, but that's a minor quibble.

Good points. But I'd consider the Olympus TG-6 instead of the WG. I love mine. And the Oly can do raw. Great for macros, and has a macro adapter for its flash.GPS too. Things like Live Composite if you do night painting, focus bracketing and stacking, and the excellent Oly Pro Capture (a great implementation of pre capturing bursts). Lots of add ons if you dive, since it's a popular camera for that. Olympus TG-6 Underwater Camera Review - Underwater Photography - Backscatter

So the red (well, red's wavelength) sort of results in a defocused edge, right? If so, then maybe less obvious then with a color sensor, and just a softer edge like after corrected. Or am I off base? I seem to recall that when using color filters with mono astro cameras there was a need to refocus, but I wasn't the one doing it.

Loved the video. I think his very personal take on it, and why he liked the experience of using a Pentax, would resonate with most of us here. The bit about the old lens he still uses from his film days, even though he's moved on to other camera brands, is probably a pretty common experience. Worth watching even if not in the market for the monochrome.

Nice video; thanks.

I have some little clip on reflective tags; hunters use them to mark paths they can follow with lights set at their lowest settings. I hang them on say a remote flash or something so I can find without using my flashlight on bright. Search for "reflective trail markers" at your favorite source. There are also reflective tacks, but not as useful...although somebody probably has done a creative night shot with them.

I agree with these. I can't tell the difference. And with my K-1ii I don't use HH pixel shift either. Most any PS stuff I do is going to be on a tripod anyway. I though DP's NR kvetching was nuts then and still do. Here's another point of view, for the K-1ii in use in astro, where noise is obviously an issue: Pentax K-1 Mark II Astrophotography Review – Lonely Speck Bottom line, they seem to be more concerned with the theoretical point of NR in raws (which is more common now) than actual results.

Pentax Interview in Cameraman Magazine from Late 2022

I found the comment about the 645Z being extremely affordable interesting...and true, especially considering lenses. Maybe they should focus on that strength, and not try to leapfrog the GFXs or compete with the flagship FFs. I think the 645Z is sort of timeless in its current form. Still one of the best sensors ever, and some lenses that are also classic. For folks who do say landscape and portrait and such there's really not much to change. Could use a few firmware tweaks, but with some retro-ish cameras doing well now maybe it will see a perk in interest, if Pentax promoted it and made it clear they're still supporting it and could do warranty work.

And that was cool that the GRiii is doing well.

Here's hoping he K-1iii is on the way this year.

Thanks for the info.

As for the profile, I used a Colorchecker and Xrite's software to make my own. But it's more attuned to landscape than portraits. Just depends what you're trying to do.

New firmware, lens-specific custom image and features for K-1, K-1 II and K-3 III

Not grads, but you can get clip in filters for Pentax that will cover a lot of Pentax lenses. https://www.stcoptics.com/pages/supported-camera-and-lenses I wouldn't be surprised if they work with more than what's on that list.

And I agree; if the firmware ND grad works I'd consider it a bargain.

New firmware, lens-specific custom image and features for K-1, K-1 II and K-3 III

Just to be clear, the grad ND function would be available with all lenses? I know that the Kyushu thing is only for a select group of lenses.

I've used the built in ND on an Olympus, and it was handy. Doesn't always replace a real one. And Q's have it. Maybe some here who are upset about the firmware should switch :)

I applaud this move by Pentax. Sort of like pay-for features in apps. Or a paid software update. And I can't see a distinction just because it's in firmware vs software. Pentax isn't charging for bug fixes, just a new feature. If they sold ND lenses filters would people object that they weren't free? if Pentax sat on this feature and put it in a K-1iii would that solve the problem? me, I'm glad they are making this available. And no one is forcing anyone to buy it. I can't get Kyushu because I don't have those lenses and it doesn't bother me either.

Pentax K-1 II — An overlooked DSLR that deserves lots of attention

Note that the 5DS R is now unavailable. Leaves the field to Pentax. I read previously it had been discontinued, https://www.diyphotography.net/production-of-the-canon-eos-5ds-5dsr-has-stopped-report-claims/. But obviously B&H had a pipeline to a bunch, and even a few popped up on Canon refurbs USA. But none at either site now, and not sure if there will be any.

I still think the K-1's are the best landscape cameras out there for the price. I'm sure the flagship R5, Sony, Nikon etc can do as well, but they still don't have Astrotracer and probably aren't as robust. And way more expensive, but in fairness also sort of apples vs oranges.

Severe banding in night shots

The issue is that the banding shows immediately in camera when shooting raw…not just in the photo I processed.

Do the raw developing settings in camera in review mode affect ALL previews? Even when not manually converting to Jpeg in camera??? Aargh. I thought the right side direction button only applied to jpeg shooting, not dng previews. That is the problem; thanks! Must have hit it in the dark. Thanks all!

Doh! You're right. I must have left it in M. You can hear it stop down when the green button is pushed, so the absence of that should have alerted me that it was working the same as the others.

So sorry...my bad. Never mind,

I've had two conversions done by Kolari Vision, and had great success with them. I believe they do K-01s. That might be a good choice, as AF on mirrored cameras is a bit of a headache by comparison. I did the full spectrum conversion, and it's great since the variation between using say a 850nm IR filter and one that allows some color, like a 590nm, is pretty dramatic. Not to mention you just put on an IR cut filter and you're back to normal. Really fun. And the best part is that you can take great landscape shots in the middle of the day with dramatic sky...no more early rising!

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

Why in the world would anyone even consider it? it's clearly an incremental change. I suppose there are some Big Deal upgrades, like the A7iii, but if not, don't even consider them in the running. Not even many die hard Pentaxians considered switching out a K-1 for K-1ii; in some ways the only unique thing about it was the send-in board swap.

Automated focus stacking

Very cool.

Focus bracketing in-camera (I agree the correct term for the shot sequence is bracketing; the post is stacking to create a single image. That's how most folks describe it, and how Oly describes it in their cameras) would be great.

I have used it with an Oly in the field and it was a lot more useful than I thought; as with exposure in some tough shooting scenarios it can improve your chances of getting a keeper even if you aren't doing stacking later. I've used it in shooting within a narrow DOF where the object is swaying around in the wind, for example. Seemed I sometimes got better results than just doing a burst on a single focus point, although on the Pentax catch-in-focus can work for that as well.
