Maxxum 2800 AF on or off K10D... will it kill it?

Just bought an older Maxxum 2800 AF flash off eBay and was *NOT* actually intending to ever use it on my K10D... what I wanted it for was selective lighting by hand during long nighttime exposures (so just planning on opening the shutter and then wandering around flashing various items to - hopefully subtly - light them).

Anyway, since I now have it and am invested to the epic amount of $20, I was curious if anyone knows if I can use this on the hotshoe of a K10D.

Not a big deal if I can't, just curious.

Also curious if using an extension cable like this one on eBay:
https://cgi.ebay.com/Flash-TTL-5m-Extension-Cord-Pentax-AF-540-360-FGZ-/3902...item5adb814a56
... would protect my camera from high voltage situation. I don't really know how the cables work, is it the same voltage risk to my camera as if I had it mounted directly in the hot shoe, or would I be able to get away with it.

Again, only $20 into the flash, lots more into the body so don't want to fry anything, but any experience with either this specific flash on the hotshoe or any older flash connected by an extension cord would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

"Universal" hotshoe flash fire at same time as built in?

Trying to figure out if a basic "universal" hot shoe flash (like the Vivitar DF183 or DF283) can be fired at the same time as my built in flash on my K10D?

It doesn't seem like a nicer flash is in the cards for me for a while so I'm hoping I could use a universal flash like one of the Vivitars with manual settings and a extension cable (like this one on eBay: Flash TTL 5m Extension Cord for Pentax AF-540 360 FGZ - eBay (item 390229740118 end time Sep-23-10 07:33:30 PDT)) to get some off camera flash for now, until I can afford a nicer flash.

My question, and it's not necessarily a deal breaker, is if anyone knows if I used a universal flash with a cable if it would fire and I could have the on camera flash fire all at the same time, i.e. if I wanted to side light something but still have some fill light coming from the built in flash. My manual seems to indicate that only Pentax flashes are capable of doing this and so therefore I'd only be able to fire the hotshoe flash *OR* the built in, but not both.

Any input appreciated, and if anyone has any experience with any of the less expensive, not TTL flashes with a K10D/K20D I'd appreciate hearing about 'em.

Thanks in advance,

Bass

Metz 48 wired off camera

First off, thanks to MattDM for the great comparison page on Pentax flashes, really really helpful.

After some looking around I'm leaning towards the Metz 48 but I want to be sure I can use it off camera *wired* as well as wireless (this will be with a K10D).

Can I just get an eBay "TTL" cord for Pentax flashes (I know Pentax is PTTL, but they always just say "TTL for Pentax" on eBay) like this:
Flash TTL Extension Cord for Pentax AF-540 AF-360 FGZ ! - eBay (item 390041914556 end time Apr-11-09 06:22:30 PDT)
... so basically just hot shoe to hot shoe. Will that work?

I'd like to be able to play with some wireless off camera for sure, but like the idea of the reliability of off camera wired so nothing can interfere. Other than not being sure how to go about this the Metz 48 looks like a great setup, but any other comments on that choice appreciated as well.

Thanks!

OrenMC,

Did you go with the Kenko 1.5x? What do you think?
