SMC Pentax-FA* 200mm F2.8 ED [IF] - any experiences on recent cameras?

so one can expect a similar poor performance when it comes to chromatic aberrations?

yes I have, but I was looking for images taken with the latest generation of cameras

highly interesting lens, thank you, alas its weight does not make it a practical alternative to the kind of lens I am looking for right now.

Pentax K-3 Mark III - First Hands-on

Some of y'all may be surprised by this, but people took sports/action photos for decades before cameras had any AF system at all. It's still possible to take outstanding photos without an AF system, and acting as if it's suddenly impossible to shoot action photos without one is disingenuous and insulting to the generations of photographers who have done so.

Instagram's new Terms of Service - Dec 20/2020

Can't help but wonder: if Instagram terms are so bad how come that so many professionals - individual photographers and institutions, art galleries and magazines - publish their material on that platform?

Wim Wenders polaroids, and "why [he thinks] photography is now over"

just the ramblings of an old man saddened by the loss of the world of his youth and - as it is always the case - that world never existed in the first place, come on Wim, make photography great again

If you look at the world of photography now, to the number of publications, festivals et cetera you could easily argue that the still image has never been more alive than today.

Would you step up from your K3II to the KP if not WHY???

getting rid of a K3II is one thing, being on the fence on both cameras it is an entirely different matter.
Last month I bought a KP, would have I done the same if I had still owned my K3?
Frankly I don't know the answer and the point is that they are very different cameras, the KP isn't a step up but a different kind of camera.
What I know is that we are in 2017 and the K3(II) is an old camera and even at the reduced price you can buy it now IMHO it is not worth buying, we call them cameras, but this is technology, they are computers with lenses, would you buy the 2014 Mac Mini today?
I don't care about what people call cons (battery, top lcd, dual card slots) for the KP, and I love its features (latest technology in terms of sensor, processor, SR, pixel shift and its 3 dials, not to mention the tilting screen) so it was an easy choice for me.
My choice would have been much harder if a K3III would have been out on the market (don't forget: when the K3 II replacement will be available its price will be considerably higher than the KP at that time).
In the end it is your choice, no one knows better than you what are your photographic needs, my suggestion is: find yourself a chance to try the camera before buying: technical specs are one thing, but ergonomics and being at ease with a tool in your hands it is the kind of rating/opinion/evaluation that we can gauge only by our personal experience.

Pentax KP vs K5-ii (Is an upgrade worth it?)

You would love the new sensor, you would not like the battery and card doors (they are fine, they are better than what you get on canikon cameras in this price range, alas Pentax has spoiled its users during the years, so I was a little bit disappointed when I got my hands on my KP, but let me add that beside these small details it is a marvelous camera).

Upgrading to K1 or sticking with APS-C

it does
not all features are equal: we have objective and subjective ones, ergonomics - I guess the top LCD versus rear screen relates to that - is an extremely subjective feature, on this respect reviews and opinions are useless and the only way to ascertain if you are comfortable with a camera's ergonomics is to try it on the field. Since I shoot digital I have always preferred cameras with an LCD on top, now I am in my 4th week with the KP: I wouldn't renounce to the third dial and I'm comfortable with the info on the rear screen, but that's me.
Less power? maybe, but spare batteries are cheap and they occupy less space than spare films years ago :)
Ergonomics comes into the equation when you have to choose between FF and APS-C: after trying FF I have chosen APS-C, I see no difference in the A3+ prints I get from the 2 systems, considering the amazing high ISO capabilities of the KP I am only losing a fraction of DOP control, I can live with that, but then again, that's me :)

Nikon Mirrorless

mirrorless is trendy
Nikon for sure has lost customers to Fujifilm et cetera
a Nikon mirrorless could stop the hemorrhage and even win back some customers

There is profit in the ILC camera market, if Sony is continuing to aggressively invest even in a shrinking market ...
Pentax itself demonstrates why there is money and profit in the ILC: have you ever wondered why Pentax offers WR, 100% viewfinder and tons of pro features in every camera? because they cost nothing in terms of production costs: pro cameras are HUGELY over-priced.

It seems you are into telephoto lenses, if you want to go FF you will need bigger and costlier lenses to achieve the same focal range you are enjoying now on APS-C: is it worth the economical and physical effort?
You have mentioned the 7DmarkII, in terms of speed it would be an improvement, no doubt about that, it would't be so in terms of resolution and overall quality of the RAW files.
Basically your motivation to switch brand is wrong, if you are willing for real to follow the rumors, the only safe brand to buy today would be Sony.
If you are satisfied with your Pentax equipment, then stay with Pentax, if you don't like the KP or the K70, wait for Pentax next camera.

You need an app - on iOS it is called Image Sync, same name on Android I guess - and it works beautifully and when I say beautifully I mean that I have used similar apps from Canon, Olympus and Panasonic and it had never been so easy to connect and manoeuvre the camera from the smartphone!
I have always owned remote controls for my cameras, first cable ones, then IR ones, but why spend money when a free app on a tool you have always with you can do the same thing?

As for the review, I appreciate the effort but to insist on the lack of the top display makes little sense to me:
1 - this camera is supposed to be SFF, to achieve that some compromises are necessary.
2 - the rear LCD behaves like a top display, as a fact it contains even more information than that

Customization is fantastic, the only minor disappointment on this regard is the lack of options for WB since it cannot be assigned outside its own button on the four way controller. I guess this will be annoying to JPEG shooters, another minor drawback - always for jpeg shooters - is that you have 5 U memories but you cannot store with them the settings that are useful for SOOC images. Nonetheless in terms of UI and handling the KP is the best camera I've ever had, I am already thinking to buy another one by the end of the year

Sorry guys but I don't get: like it or not DPR is the most read gear review website, they write that the K1 is the best Full Frame DSLR in that price range and you are not happy about it? I am certain the people at Ricoh are happy about that, that's good advertising!

TOP 10 compact DSLR. So what according to you are the TOP 10 compact APS-C and FF?

The way I see it compactness of the body means nothing when you have to attach huge lenses to it, that's the reason why I am not interested in FF cameras anymore, I have used Canon's 5D and 6D and they can be considered compact when you compare them to the 1D series, but - personally - when I have decided that I wanted compactness I have chosen a KP, the 100D is a great camera and I have been tempted to wait for its upfated version which is to be released soon, but in the end Canon has a very limited number of native APS-C lenses.
So I repeat myself: if you want compactness you need to consider both camera and available lenses and from this perspective - since you are excluding mirrorless - nobody beats Pentax bodies and APS-C lenses, maybe someone wishing to use only the two consumer STM zooms could be even happier with a 100D.

this is an example of the damage done by journalism made by dilettantes.
How many potential new users is Pentax losing these days because of these fake news?
Pentax is healthy and making money for Ricoh - this is a fact.
Pentax, Canon, Nikon et cetera are all on the same deathbed, no one of them will disappear until there will be a camera business, even Minolta is still with us, though now they call them Sony

Small, fast, or cheap lenses: How do Pentax and Fuji Systems Compare?
Posted By talgarik
Replies: 105

suppose you are into macro photography: how can you justify Fujifilm investment?
suppose you are into bird hunting: how can you justify Fujifilm investment?
suppose you are into sport photography: how can you justify Fujifilm/Pentax investment?
suppose you are into landscape photography: how can you justify APS-C or so-called FF investment?

the list could be endless, the answer is simple: you are on a budget, you need a compromise.
