Why do they think a newcomer to the world of photography would pick a Pentax DSLR over a mirrorless from one of the majors given that they're all the rage these days?

I used the DA*200 daily for a month in August. It is outstanding on the K-1. Look at an album HERE if you like.
I would imagine a good copy of the FA*200 would do just as well.
Compared to the FA*80-200 or DFA*70-200, it is tiny. If size matters, and you want 200/2.8, then go for it.

The Travertines are part of a major attraction at Pamukkale in Western Turkey. They are the result of calcium-laden hot springs water flowing over the hills for many years. The formations here are partially man-made, as the locals arrange stones in the shapes seen in this photo, so that the water backs up and eventually overflows them, forming a terraced appearance.
Next to this are the remains of the Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis, with the modern Turkish city of Pamukkale at the foot of the hills.

If you can find an FA* 80-200 it is amazing at 200mm if heavier. Although the Power Zoom won't work on the KP but will if you end up with a K-1.

Morning fog blanketing Corner Inlet on a winter morning. Two images with the KP and DFA 100 macro, stitched in Microsoft ICE. (X-posted from panos thread.)
This was taken on the same morning as the first image in post #2591. I like them both. This one is more minimalist. I would probably include one in my "best of 2020" set, but I can't decide which. |

You could be right, but that is not the problem. Some of us find it very easy to get down to make a connection with Mother Earth and her progeny, but then impossible to get up again. If the K-3 Mark III comes with a free remote-controlled fork lift truck, I might consider it.

I mounted the Pentax K1 on the 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 telephoto and composed this Fall picture. |

Last week I got my new KP as a replacement of my good old K-01 that passed away with a shutter stuck...
This Saturday I went out with it early in the morning on a dull winter day . I took some old light weight M lenses with me and took some shots with them most of the time two stops down. I shot RAW and developed those to JPG's trying to recover as much as possible that was caught in the dynamic range. So where the out of camera JPG's showed bright skies I stretched the capture range to get some texture in the bright clouds and dark fields. That results in paint-style pictures that I really like.
I was surprised that even at a 24 MP cropped sensor these old cheap lenses deliver enough sharpness stopped two clicks down. Even my M28 delivers very crispy and contrasty pictures at the 5.6 - 8 range.
I think my KP and I will become good friends when I want to travel light. Manual focusing feels even more spot on than on my K1ii.
Some shots I took can be found here: Henrico's Album: New KP with M-lenses - PentaxForums.com
Enjoy!

You could continue this line of reasoning to the point where all technological innovations after 1850* are insulting. Taking photographs at all is an affront to anyone who spent decades honing their painting skills.

Yes it has a lot of nice upgrades, but yes it's also missing an articulating screen that would have been super helpful to many.
We don't need to battle the viewpoints we don't like, just because we don't hold them.

In this day and age to come out with a flagship Aps-c camera and not have an articulating screen doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I recently purchased a used SMC 300mm f4, and have been using it for SIC this month. It's been a challenge, but I have become familiar enough with it to focus on rapidly moving objects such as this hawk. It was perched slightly below me as I was viewing the valley from an overlook, so I waited in hopes of seeing it move, and my patience paid off. Processed with Topaz Adjust AI |

Hello everyone!
I am a Nikon user currently, in Devon - UK. I've always been looking to get a Pentax but haven't ever been able to decide on one; but I think the time may have come. I tend to shoot a lot of 6-12mp cameras in my downtime, as I enjoy CCD a lot. I have 20+mp bodies but for me personally I like having an older, manual setup with no AF and the idea of in body stabilisation and whatnot is very attractive.
I mostly shoot landscapes, cars and motorcycles, and pets. (Including horses and the like).
So yeah! I look forward to becoming part of the community; plus I've missed a good ol' forum.

This may be of interest to someone.
There's a free download of Thorsten Overgaard's - The Moment of Emotional Impact in Photography.
Thorsten is a Leica shooter. Tho I doubt that bears much either way. He's a photographer. I have only flicked through the book so I can't say much but it looks interesting enough to waste a bit of downtime flicking through.
Get it here: The Moment of Emotional Impact |

I found someone who was getting rid of their pentax system and bought the D FA 100 2.8 Macro WR and the SMC Pentax-FA 35mm F2 AL from them for a great price and they're pretty much all I've been using the past week or so and I'm loving it.

I find this argument that "the K-70 is almost the same as the KP for half the cost" a little intellectually lazy.
Just a reminder of the some of the significant differences:
- Metering: 86K pixel vs 77 segment
- AF system: SAFOX11 (27 point) vs SAFOX 10 (11 point), plus new tracking algorithms
- Processor: Prime IV + accelerator vs Prime M II
- 3 Control wheels vs 2
- Shake Reduction: 5-axis SRII vs SR
- Ultrasonic DRII vs sensor shake DR
- Quiet shutter and motor aperture vs louder shutter and solenoid aperture.
- 7FPS vs 6FPS
- Magnesium body vs plastic.
- Electronic shutter option
- External battery grip option
Yeah they both share a 24MP sensor (actually different ones) but other than that they have very little in common.
They clearly are just different classes of camera and the price differential reflects that.
If you think a $450 price differential at launch (or $300 today) is not worth those extra features then then fair enough.
If you don't need any of those and a K-70 does the job for you then fair enough.
But saying they are more or less the same and one is half the price just doesn't stand up in my mind.

Hello,
Reviving this thread as I now know more.
After 2 copies sent back under warranty, I had my third copy and... boom, happened again recently. Autofocus stuck.
Which lead to asking myself what the hell am I doing wrong : it always happened while zooming back (say from ~200mm to ~80mm) somehow quickly, and autofocusing at the same time threw AF-AEL button. Nothing dramatic on this point...
Then I saw the light (yes, it took time :/), that it might me originating from my K3II, or the from connection between the DSLR and the telezoom.
So I switched AF->M on the DSLR and manual focus was indeed working without a flaw. I forgot now if this had been the case with my former copies... but I feel really stupid not having tried that if this was the case !
Switch again M->AF and was working again.
Happened a couple of times again since, and I just switched AF->M, manually turn the focus ring, and M->AF : it solved it.
I tried to have a look on the connection since, cleaned it, nothing seems wrong with it, and after a few days of extensive use I didn't have the problem again.
So in the end, it just seems to be a gentle connecting problem / maybe the K3II AF/M switch.
I've never had this happen with any other lens than my 60-250 tho. It's also the one I use extensively...
I hope this experience can bring light to someone having this problem !

Thanks for the welcome comments! Coupled with my K-70, I included the DA 18-135mm lens, I think it should be a good walking around lens. Now for what may be an extensive learning curve discovering the world of digital photography!:)
