The images were fine, but truthfully no better than what I get with the 150-450. The bigger issue with the Sigma was it being so front heavy, well actually heavy in general, and being restricted to one focal length. It was simply unwieldy and unbalanced, and not as adaptable to different scenarios I run into while hiking or birding.

Focus speed on the Pentax is slightly faster and more decisive, but the Sigma was absolutely acceptable too; nothing to complain about. It's mostly about heft, balance, and adaptability.

Was lucky enough to meet a mason bee (I think) on a dandelion. I don't recall ever seeing one before.

Thank you! It was the first time I've seen that bird and it thankfully put on a great show.

Here's a northern mockingbird, framed with an atypical background of the sun reflecting off the dome of a church. I thought it had an interesting look.

Hi,

many thanks for asking :)

Unfortunately due to medical circumstances I haven't been able to use my cameras in over a month. I did buy a Tokina 12-28mm lens for it (a great price from a camera store on Ebay at $200) which I can definitely say is a much better night time lens then the Nikon 18-300mm. It has more contrast, makes stars pin point (as opposed to donut shaped) and the overall color/contrast rendition is fantastic.

At the moment I am planning a trip to Turkey (as suggested by family who live out there; I haven't been back there in around 15 years now - again due to medical circumstances) of which I want to take both my systems and actually start going to places to get the type shots that I want.
It will be a massive ordeal though as I need to find a specialist doctor to create an action plan with in case things go bad, and also find the correct medication to hopefully prevent issues and allow me to enjoy the trip. On top of all that, we need to contact the airline too and see how they can help especially with 'fast tracking' me through the airport as I don't deal with crowds and busy places well at all, and it usually ends out in an ambulance call out and me ending up in hospital (hopefully that will be corrected by having the right medication in the first place but still I don't want to take any chances).
If it does work out and is a success in terms of me being able to get there and additionally take some nice photos, then I do plan to blog/write about it here and especially the difficulties faced in the hope that it will inspire and motivate many people, either to take up a camera or just simply get out there and do what they love doing. Of course I will be presenting the images in the post :)

Another Clapper Rail. This was the first clapper rail that I have seen swim or fly. I noticed this bird flying in very awkwardly, kind of like a wounded duck, fast wing movements, but not smooth, then hits the water and it swims like a coot, which it is in the same family. Only other I have ever seen are walking through the marsh grass.

I'm pretty happy with the cranefly image below. It seemed to be eating something off the surface of the leaf.

ADDENDUM: After doing some research that should have been done before typing the caption for this post, adult craneflies rarely eat, When they do, it's nectar or pollen from flowers. So the cranefly below was probably getting some moisture from the surface of the leaf, as was the fly in the third image.

Clackers' Beginners Tip 23: Flash Extenders Pt 1

I thought your joke about work was your best one yet. I also thought your tip on shutter sound and what birds or other critters react to was the key point That is the key tip but let all try it all and decide for themselves.

I sat with a woman today who had been there for 3 hours. She told me of all the birds she saw (with her Canon and 600mm on a monopod) They all came close because she waited and didn't make sounds or focus on them. I move. They see me approach, or point a lens at them, or any attention to them at all is too much within a certain range. Later I sat on the phone as bird after bird landed in front of me. I didn't give any reason to think I was a threat. Dragonflies key in on eyes. I learned to approach behind the camera. They do not perceive the lens as a predator. You know you won't harm them but makes them think you won't harm them is more important. I have lost many shots this year being to eager to get it.

Don't be what they see as a threat. Behind the lens I walked right up to this one and I also used a flash. It never saw me as a threat.

EF is for full frame...EFs is for crop bodies and doesn't fit a FF Dslr.

The EF glass designated L is the higher end optics. They have the UltraSonicMotor and are environmentally sealed.

The basic glass labelled STM and no weather protection but some of these lenses are very good.

There are 3 native adapters which are all natively sealed and work perfectly.

RF and RFs will work seamlessly on crop and FF Canon bodies.

There will be people who shoot brands beside Pentax that will do the same.

If you can, keep your KP.It has features that might come in handy in the future.

UPDATE!

What can I say? Less is more? Hahaha! This is a much more simplified PP3 set. I have been playing with different NR settings for the past few months & have modified the basic ISO PP3 with new settings.

All of them have the noise reduction set to RGB Conservative & are using the Automatic global setting. Keep in mind that each ISO PP3 has other NR settings that work for each ISO. You do have the option of setting the noise reduction to L*a*b* as well. The False color suppression steps has been turned on from ISO 3200 going forward. The TSM - PP3 Optional - Noise Reduction contains some more PP3 files that add additional noise reduction.

I combined the previous exposure & color folders to a new folder called TSM - PP3 Optional - Color & Exposure. If you install the 19 provided camera .dcp files into the dcpprofiles folder in RawTherapee, you can use the Adobe DCP Tone Curve - Flat PP3 file to default your image to the Pentax Natural image tone instead of using the generic Auto-Matched Tone Curve feature. Keep in mind that images shot with the D-range settings turned on in the camera might have some exposure issues.

Always remember that you need to apply a basic ISO PP3 file first before you apply any other PP3 file or change settings. You can make processing rules in the Dynamic Profiles Rule section in Preferences. There is a dynamicprofile.cfg file that has some basic rules already set up for you. It's an optional thing to install, but it will overwrite your current settings if you replace it.

And there you have it in a nutshell. Try them out before you decide to delete your current ones. I'm having issues compiling a RawTherapee build at the moment, but I'll get around to it once I fix it. Have fun!

Dating back to the 7th Century, Whitby Abbey stands in remarkable and gothic isolation on the hills over the North Yorkshire town. It was confiscated by the Crown during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century, leading to its ruination. I will be posting more shots of it in the coming weeks, but for now, here's a star trail.

Famously the Abbey features in Bram Stoker's Dracula - a connection much exploited by local tourism!

Yes, I did PP, including adding sharpness. The lens, as I've written, is only "moderately" sharp at 300mm (at least compared to lenses like the DA* 300). In my experinece, the real difference between the DA* 300 and the 55-300 PLM @ 300mm is the PLM doesn't do as well when you crop. You can do a 50% crop with the DA* lens and still get tack sharp 20 inch print. That's more chellenging with the PLM—at least in my experience. So when I do use 300mm on the PLM, if I can't more or less fill the frame, I rarely take the shot. It also helps to keep the ISO down, because that allows for more sharpening in post. And a shutter of speed of 1/250 sec or greater is helpful as well. Here's another 300mm shot from the lens:

Both stacks of a few frames. Second one has a strange effect around that seems like excessive usage of shadow recovery but it's actually poor lighting that is hotspots from the flash.
The flower petals have a very peculiar texture, they look almost like paper or plastic, and are very reflective under certain angles.
