Samsung TL500/EX1 f/1.8 lens P&S

Don't hold your breath...when I was shopping for my compact I kept reading that there wasn't going to be an LX4 and that the GF-1 was going to replace it.

Anyway, I wouldn't say the LX3 is by any means outdated yet - still a great camera. I haven't seen any newer compacts that make me say "Damn, I should have waited!"

Get a decent P&S or wait for M4/3 to drop in price

One thing to consider - most people who want a P&S expect at least some amount of zoom. An M4/3 is only comparable in size to a P&S when equipped with some kind of pancake prime. Any kind of zoom lens attached makes it decidedly unpocketable. That, and price, was one thing that led me and my girlfriend to go with an LX3 for her small camera instead of an EP-1. When she needs more zoom than the LX3 provides she just takes my K10D away from me

I love these old FF posts. It just goes to show we have no clue as to markets, costs or technology as little as two years down the road. So anyone who says Pentax can't/won't/shouldn't go full frame in the near future is being a bit narrow-minded.

Funny how two years changes a technological landscape. In the Post-Sony A850 camera world I can now whole heartedly say "low end FF, please".

I'm sticking with the K10D and a small lens line up until Pentax releases such a thing, preferably in a 35mm sized body (enough paenis-extensions already!).

It's time that landscape photographers are able to fully enjoy the Pentax lens legacy (without having to break the bank for a 645D).

Bring on the long-awaited digital LX!!!!

I haven't seen or read anything about this camera but I would wager it is just LX inspired in the same way that the K-7 is.

I would also guess that other new series will follow this ruggedness trend as well (perhaps not the Kx replacement as thats a different marketing segment).

For example, the LX inspired EVIL camera will have an LX inspired FF counterpart.

Thats my 2 cents (but a defunct currency no doubt). Maybe ogl knows more...

I had the Lumix case 'thrown in' as part of the deal when I bought my LX3(it costs about $30 i guess?). While it is undeniably retro-chic, I don't like that you have to unscrew the bottom part to get at the battery and SD card, there should be some sort of door in the leather as well. Other than that it's pretty schnazzy.

Question for LX3/G11 (or similar) owners...

I use my LX3 a bit more than my K10D. An SLR, even with a low profile prime like the Ltds just isnt practical for me to carry around. If I'm going out on the town I definitely use the LX3. It takes visibly better pictures than most point and shoots, is plenty fast and fits in a small bag or jacket pocket.

However, as you would expect, the K10D takes noticeably better pictures, especially at ISO 200-800 (anything above 400 on either camera is pretty lousy but 800 is usably medicore on the K10 while just plain horrid on the LX3). I also enjoy shooting with the K10D much more, the controls are of course far superior.

So, if I'm out and about but not planning on shooting and want a camera just in case I see something inspring, I reach for the LX3.

If I'm actively shooting or doing something particularly scenic (motorcycle trips/hiking etc), I take the Pentax and a tripod.

Not to say that the LX3 cant take enthusiast-grade photos (I've been amazed in good and even decent lighting) but the SLR is of course going to get better results more often.

Hope that helps!

Anyway, we Pentaxians dont have to worry about such gadgetry. When my son is 3, dad's ol' K10D should be plenty sturdy

It would be something of a marketing coup if Pentax had an outdoor oriented, all weatherproofed line up but I agree with those who say that its unnecessary in this bracket.

That said, this puppy looks like quite a banger!

New CMOS sensor, HD video, live view, Prime II, reasonable FPS.

SOLID!

When I bought my camera last year I was a bit worried about the future of the K-mount. I'm getting less so with each successive model released by Pentax.

Pentax Had a 4% Share of DSLR in 2008

Not bad considering Pentax had NOTHING exciting going on last year. What they had were two solid but not particularly innovative DSLR's that skipped the low and high end of the APS-C market:

K200D was great but kind of a tweener. A few promiment review sites said as much. I imagine many people went higher or lower end. I personally opted for the discontinued K10D's dual dials and better viewfinder for a slightly higher price. Again, a good camera and a nice upgrade from the K100D but not a Pentax Evangelizer in any way.

K20D was another great camera but really not a head-turner in any way. Too similar to K10D(on the surface at least) and despite awesome build and image quality for the money its performance was not on par with its competitors. Like the K200D, a great camera for Pentax's existing market but nothing to grab the attention of Olympians or Canikonites.

2009 should look better.

The K-m got great reviews and is priced nicely. People upgrading from P&S now have a compelling and cost effective option to invest in the Pentax system.

The K-7 is an E-3 Killer (to me this is HUGE) and despite still trailing in ISO performance, a viable 50D and D300 competitor. Add to that some novel features and a uniquely small package, the K-7 appeals to both Pentax's core market as well as new users.

So, anyone want to field a guess on how Photoscala's results will look next year? Would I? Sure, I'm no expert but here goes:

Canon will still shrink but I'm not sure how much. Nikon and Sony might beat on them pretty hard this holiday season. Lets see how the 7D does against the D300S.

I predict Sony will continue to steal from Canon's plate with the A850.

Nikon will stay about the same rate if not better. Let's see how Sony affects them too. Nikon does have a really solid product offering in every segment of the market. I personally loathe Nikon (for their features-to-pricing ratios and smug users) but I have to admire their product quality and business savvy.

Not sure what will happen to Olympus. The EP-1 is quite unique and innovative but its pricey and apparently not that user friendly for upward-bound P&S people. The 2009 e-series are not particularly innovative, the creative filters are cool(I guess?) but not a game changer in any way. It's possible Pentax or Panasonic could knock Oly back a spot or two.

Pentax will stay in 5th but I don't predict it will lose more market share maybe 0% or slight growth. However, Pentax will be profitable for Hoya per recent news.

Panasonic is the wild card here. Let's see how the G-1 series does.

LR2 vs Bibble 5

Yeah what's up with Bibble Labs? Its been a year since it was announced and still lots of unresolved issues with the trial version. Maybe it will be released around the same time as Our Beloved 645D? Still, for an estimated $100 cheaper than LR2.4 it looks tempting enough for me to wait a bit longer and hold off on LR.

Anyhow, seems to be a lot of vitriol spraying around the Bibble Labs support forum:

LR2 vs Bibble 5

I have used trial versions of both software (LR2 and Bibble 4) and while Bibble seems to have good features, better performance (not sure if my dual core cpu and 3gb of ram can utilize this or not) and a MUCH better price, I just fell in love with the Lightroom interface and organization. I find Bibble to be more cumbersome and not as easy to use. However, I haven't tried Bibble 5 yet. From the screenshots it looks more like Lightroom in its layout. Anyone used the trial version of Bibble 5 yet? I might have to wait and see as Lightroom, like all Adobe products, are Highway Robbery when it comes to pricing and I'd rather not go through the frustration and moral greyness of pirating it. I mean, I could buy a Fast Fifty for that price!

AAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNYYYYYYYWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY......... I was skeptical at first when I read the leaked info but perhaps Canon has worked some magic on that 18mp sensor after all. Looks like the 7D is quite a nice rig. Maybe it will put some downward pressure on the price of the K-7. Also, I just knew that before long Canon would come out with a camera that looks better than the K-7 in all the areas that matter to waankers. C'est la vie.

Canon losing interest in the megapixel race?

It would indeed seem the race is back on.
Just when I thought Canon was showing some intelligence, I see this oddball tweener of a camera. I wonder exactly what market that thing is aimed at. For $100 cheaper the D300 is a stellar camera that should have better high ISO (unless Canon is really working some magic on that 18mp APS-C). The K-7 can also compete, at least in image quality, in a smaller built-in SR package with a lower price.

I dont see this price point for APS-C DSLR's sticking around much longer. It won't be long before we see FF units at or under $2000 (eg. Sony A850).

Agreed, but still, larger photosites are larger photosites. And from what I've read they have improved the sensor along with their noise reduction (although I'm always a bit wary when it comes to noise reduction on a P&S). No, I'm sure it won't be as good as 4/3 or APS-C but it's still a step in the right direction.

The G11 with optional leather case is really sexy looking. I'm trying to convince my girlfriend that it is in fact a "pocket" camera and that it is in fact the perfect size for her. ;) Curious to see how it stacks up against the LX3 IQ-wise.

Looks like Canon is saying no to the megapixel craze with its latest enthusiast compact. Interesting, as they are the last company I would expect to reduce the resoultion (by 4MP!) on one of their key cameras. I hope this is a sign of things to come in the industry.

Canon unveils PowerShot G11 high-end compact: Digital Photography Review

I wonder if the new G11 will deliver on its claims...I had little interest in the G10 and was pretty set on getting an LX3 as my compact but this may be another reasonably priced option (the Oly EP-1 and Ricoh GR3 being a bit rich for my blood). If only Pentax made something in this class!

Anyway, I'm pleased to see Canon is marketing something to enthusiasts instead of sheep. Anyone else a bit interested in this camera?

k10d intermittant problem - the end of my k10?

How many other SD cards did you try? Were they new ones? If they were heavily used did you reformat them first? I had a very similar intermittent problem (neon vertical lines and pictures in one solid neon color) and it went away when I tried a new card as was suggested in a thread I posted. Also, the problem card worked fine once I reformatted it. However, I've only taken a handful of shots so far. I'm curious to see what you find out. Good luck!

K10D intermittent green pictures and vertical color banding...whats up?

I've had my K10D for a little less than a year now with no problems but its been acting up increasingly lately.

First, a couple weeks ago I took a picture of a harbor and noticed a vertical blue band of color in the middle of the photo. It only happened that once so I considered it some sort of digital anomaly.

I used the camera off and on over the last two weeks with no problems.

Today, I took some pictures and over half turned out to be completely green.

In addition to the total neon green coloration some of them had a red, green or blue vertical band of color as well.

What could this be? A sensor problem or something more simple? I'll take it into service soon but I'm just curious if anyone else has encountered this problem.

Poll: Why did you buy a Pentax DSLR?

1. Weather proofing and build quality - I'm a traveler first and a photographer second. Babying a camera would ruin the experience for me. I've already shot in the rain, the jungle humidity and around splashing water. I've also accidentally smashed the body into rocks and tree branches on several occasions. The K10D is tough as hell, I can throw it in the top pouch of my backpack and pull it right out when its time to take a shot (I do however wish it was a bit smaller, oh how I want a K-7!)

2. In-body SR: I don't generally take a tripod hiking or motorcycling, I often dont have the time (or level enough ground) to use one. Being able to use any K-mount lens handheld with acceptable results is great!

3. Value: Canon and Nikon's alternatives in the price range dont work for me. While the performance may be better on C and N cameras (less so now with the K-7), most of the cameras in my price range are lightweight crap with dumbed down features. The K10D's shooting modes and dual e-dials have done much more for my photographic education than any auto scene mode on a C or N. Also, the availabilty (both new and used) of good quality glass at less-than-outrageous prices is great!

So there you have it! My Pentax is a very useful lifestyle tool and not a photographic phallus extension to show off to other enthusiasts (no offense).

This would seem to be an annoying piece of technology. I imagine over 50% of the time it would say:

"You need a faster lens"

But if I want to use a zoom lens it won't be faster than 2.8.
It's like the flash indicator constantly blinking when you don't want to use flash.

I'm curious to see if this technology has any use at all. Perhaps someone with more experience can tell me the point.

Looking for a film body, lots of questions!

Okay, I have begun the hunt for a film body to try something new(lol) and to sate my CBA until I can afford a K7. I've done some research but there are still an insane amount of models to sort through. I have some criteria and would like some suggestions.

1. VF should be at least as good as my K10D

2. It must have manual mode, and preferably Av and a program mode or two as well.

3. A good metering system (preferably at least center + spot)

4. AF would be nice but not neccessary

5. Good build quality

6. Under $150 USD (so MZ-S and LX are probably out of the question :( )

So far I'm leaning toward the MZ/ZX-3 or 5n because they are newer and have good features.

Other models I'd like feedback or opinions on:

- The rest of the MZ/ZX series (Still trying to sort this mess of a series out on Dimitrov's K-mount page but its giving me a headache)

- PZ-1P

- SFX/SF1n (these seem to stir up little or no interest on eBay. Is there something wrong with them? It seems like a good model)

- ME Super

- KX, K2

- Super Program

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me, also feel free to suggest any other models!
