Not a street photographer, is the GR still right for me? (travel and everyday use)

The Sony RX100 has been mentioned. I know the IQ difference is going to be important between both cameras, but how good is the RX? For example, compared to my K10 with the 35 DA, is there going to be a lot of difference? If I can get near to that with the Sony I think I'd be happy.

Thanks for your insight. I'll keep the K10D and maybe upgrade it at some point, so I would still have a bit more reach... but right now I'm using it very little so I guess at the end of the day the compact will be my main device and the K10D something for very specific days (e.g. when I'm driving with somebody to a specific place or doing some portrait of friends or family).

My comment about the Nikon was not really ment seriously. If I'm getting a prime I'll consider it very carefully and probably get the Nikon. I'd definitely keep my K10D, so I would have the option of a bit more reach.

Thank you all guys for your answers!

DeadJohn, great images! Especially the first one is just amazing.

J-L SALVIGNOL, was that a used camera or new? That's a very good tip with the Nikon. The price difference is 100€ right now which is significant.

Did you find it hard to adapt? As I said, my experience with 28mm frustrated me... but I'm not sure if the problem was my inhability to shoot it right or just a more technical problem with my kit lens. Probably both factors play a role as I've learned a bit since I relegated the 18-55 in the drawer.

hahaha, good point. I'm trying to find a reason not to buy the Nikon, as the ugly silver version is 100€ cheaper then the GR right now... I guess this confirms I'm a little fanboy too. Or hateboy of Canikon. There are interesting points in which the GR might be better so... I guess I'm gonna have to think about it.

That's the key. And I have no clue. Watching sample photos with the GR I'm absolutely amazed. But that's definitely also because the photographers are way better then I am. On the other hand, I'm a bit of a pixel peeper... so giving IQ feels wrong. But I change my mind every day.

Anyway, still have to decide about fixed focal lenght + superb quality vs. flexible zoom + not so good quality. It's gonna drive me creazy.

Can anybody recommend some article, video or similar about shooting at 28mm? How to do it and what it's good or bad for? (besides the obvious imposibility for classic portraits and shooting wild bears). Found some interesting but rather superficial material.

Thanks again for patiently answering my doubts! :)

Thank you too for your answer!

I think I've been unconsistant, mixing real and equivalent focal lenghts. I'm happy with my M-28. It's the 18-55 lens, shooting at the wide end (18mm, so 28mm film equivalent) where I have felt frustrated.

I'd keep the K10D, so I'd have two cameras in the end... but I think the compact camera I buy will become my primary camera, because I seldomly find time to specifically go out to take pictures. The only scenario where the K10D would be a better option is classic portraits and landscapes where I don't need to walk too much (which are going to be the minority of them). Anything involving a fair amount of walking around I'll go with the compact camera I think.

I have just read about the Lumix DMC GM 1 and GM 5, maybe this are options too with a zoom lens. I'll investigate a bit more. Still, hesitant to sacrifice IQ. :D

Or just feeling the camera. I saw a Pentax K50 in a store once and hold it for a while and was surprised how odd it felt and that I was missing some buttons the K10D had. And that was after I allready had read and watched a couple of reviews.

Everybody seems to love their GR and that's the main reason I started even entertaining the idea of accepting the fixed lense. Right now it's mainly the dust issue holding me back, especially because it makes a second hund buy pretty dangerous, increasing the cost to the pain zone.

I would only wait if I can expect something similar/better in the same price range (which I guess I can't). In Germany I can't expect any further price drops (for example right now amazon price for K5 is 400$ compared to 294$ in the US. K3 goes for 200$ more then in the US or the price of the K-3 II. These are stable prices here. And if you compare it to the Adorama deals... Just saw you are british, sorry for this little rant.).

Hi!

I have a K10D and was thinking of upgrading to a new body as I had some nice money coming in this christmas. But I have realized, that the main problem with my photography is not the old camera. My problem is that I just don't take enough photos. Using a DLSR is the main reason: it's so big that it's only an option when you specifically go out to just take photos. I have little time for that. Aditionally I'm beeing atracted to (leightweight) bike traveling... a purpose for which a 1,5kg camera/lens set-up is not acceptable.

So, here I am looking for the perfect compact/POS camera. I would use it for the bike trips I want to do and also as an everyday camera, which would include from hikes, runs, biking and nature/city walks to family gatherings and maybe some parties too (in order to have nice "memory" photos: my current digital album is way crappier then my family album until 2005).

The GR seems perfect: it's tiny and everybody has high regards of its astonishing quality (I guess its an improvement over my K10D).

I have only two concerns: will I get along with the fixed focal lenght of 28mm? Especially in landscape photography? My problem is that I became a bit of a 28mm "hater". I have the 18-55 kit lens for the K10D and when I look back, almost all my photos are pretty crappy. Only when I read in this forum about using more normal focal lenghts and if necesary stiching them, I've started noticing some improvement in my photos. But this might also be due to technical limitations (I had tremendous problems focusing with my kit lens compared to the Pentax-M 28mm or the DA-35). Has anybody here gone through the same process? I'd love to hear your opinion or maybe you can point me out to some article giving some tips/explanations for this focal lenght. I'm considering getting a compact camera with zoom, but I'm hesitant about compromising IQ. And I guess with practice almost everything other compact cameras can do is doable with the GR too (except "classic" portraits, for which I'd still have the K10D+50mm 1.7 which gives enough quality for ocassional "documentational" portraits of friends, family and myself).

The other concern is... the dust problem. Is it really that prevalent? Can it be avoided? My dream bike travel (planned for sumer 2017) is along the Great Divide Route. If you search in youtube "Highlights from the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route" you will see it's thousands of miles off-road. Does this sort of use disqualify the GR as an option?

Thanks! :-)

P.S.: As I'm on it, do you think a new similar model can be expected in the next 6-12 months? Even of other brands or even with zoom? (if yes I could wait).

Oh no, don't get me wrong! He is a very a nice guy and was saying this in a joking manner. But I think he ment it, at least to some extent: he might really think that Pentax gear is of lesser quality... probably without having tried it or red about it. That's the only thing bothering me: people judging without any knowledge. I also have my opinion about Canon/Nikon and it's partially negative, but I like to think it's based on a bit of reading.

At least he admits being a bit of a Nikon fanboy. I might be a bit of a Pentaxfanboy too, btw.

That's pretty much it.

This year at our Christmas dinner I got told that "Pentax is, no offense, a second grade camera system". After that, he went on to take our family group picture against the sun and with the following setting: 15mm, ISO 1600, 1/320s and f9.0... getting a crappy smartphone-like picture with his 2 000€ camera/lens set-up.

So, even if Pentax was a "second grade system" (which of course, it isn't!), it's more then enough for 99% of the canonikers (also for me!).

I'm very happy with my choice and don't really care what others buy. Unless it's a friend. Then I'm usually sad because they could be saving some bucks going with Pentax.

Does anybody know a metadata (tagging) free software that runs on Windows?

Something where I can review my photos fast, culling and tagging them before I import them into LR (I have some serious performance issues with it and want to keep it's usage to a minimum).

Similar to Photo Mechanics.

Thanks everybody for your comments, you brought up a lot of valid points and have made me understand my own photo way better then I would have been able on my own. While I vaguely had in mind the three zones @TaoMaas mentions, I think I wouldn't have been able to articulate that thought (must keep reading!). And I definitely never thought about the blue-orange relation.

It does. In fact I only started to find the picture interesting when I reviewed it on my tablet which roughly equals to a din A4 page.

I agree with most of what you said and I like the high standard you follow in your critique and it's definitely a good way to learn (although getting 350$ for a picture it is a standard I am not aiming and will probably never do, just as I remain content with my 38:32 personal best on 10 000 and might want to attack the 36 minutes next season, but will never get any sponsor to pay me even a coke).

About the sky I have to say that is was concious decision to make it look like that. I went to this coast line while travelling with my parents so I had no influence on the day (weather) and time I would be there... resulting in very boring conditions. Especially in that direction it was just a monotone greyish sky... so I tried to do what I could with what I had. Later I might put up an unedited version, maybe you have a better idea I could try. If I could, I would try to go back on a stormy day (photo is not mine, randomly pulled from google!) or even better on a day with big waves. I probably wouldn't make any great picture because that conditions are spectacular but also pretty difficult to exploit... but at least I'd have a great time watching the storm.

Ok... I'm drifting into tourism advertise for that region, which is paradise to me. Bufones de Pría in Asturias, northern Spain... if anybody wonders.

Why is Ricoh even bothering with a FF?

I think that a big part of the problem here is what was said before: marketing and distribution.

I always research A LOT whenever I want to buy a product in order to get the best value for my money. So when I started looking into DLSR it was natural that I ended up with Pentax. But a lot of people don't bother that much. They decide they want a camera and then they want it today, not after weeks of research... so they go to a store, grab the first thing the sellers recommends and go home. Or they go to amazon, type in what they know (which is Canon or Nikon) and choose the camera that matches their budget. Getting these people to buy Pentax is no easy task: you have to be present at physical stores, you have to get the sellers in those stores to actually know the pentax line of products and recommend them to potential customers... and you have to be known enough so the customer doesn't get suspicious. And that's no easy task.

I remember that I went to a couple of bigger stores when I was about to buy the K10D. My impression was that I knew more about the different cameras then most of them did... and only a few of them mentioned Pentax before I asked, some of them even giving wrong information after that. I guess the situation hasn't change... and reversing this is not easy.

Hubble has done (at least) 1 million "observations" which I supose are what we would call "pictures". According to this source (p.32), the total cost is of 10 billion dollars. So I think we might estimate the cost of each picture to be of 10 000$ which is pretty lame.

My methodology is probably crap, but I think it gives an idea of the actual situation.

I am to lazy to look for the data of how much Apollo programmes costed, how many pictures were taken and how much of the total payload was made up by photographic equipment. But even if you would assume that the Apollo programm was only about taking pictures, it would take ca. 28 000 photos to be cheaper than the one mentioned by OP (Apollo cost estimated at 100 billion). According to this source on the sourface of the moon 6 000 pictures were taken. I don't think a fourth of the Apolo payload was photographic equipment... so I guess also those pictures are not the most expensive ones.

Hi!

So, here I present you what is probably (one of) my favourite photos I have taken so far. The thing is: I'm not sure why I like it so much (I'm not good at consciently composing photos... still working on that).

(I'd ask you to give make your opinion before reading mine :-) ).

Sure, it's a nice cliff, it has this sort of curvy-dynamic from the bottom left corner to the top of the cliff. Parallel to that I really like the color of the sea and especially how it transitions. Together with the white sky it gives me a feeling of vast, which nicely fits to the sea motive and impresses me a bit. It's also really sharp. But still, I'm not sure if it's so "impressive" if you don't know the rest of the area where it was taken (a spectacular coast stripe in Asturias, aka ing paradise, in northern Spain). Also achieving nice colours is a bit of my achilles heel (together with sharpness, which was probably due to my lenses). I have also spent a lot of time unsuccesfully trying to get a satisfying photo of the sea (as I love it so much). So I might be a bit biased by my own photographic "traumas". :)

What do you think?

It's a stich of 5 photos and probably my first succsessfull attempt to make landscape/nature photography with this technique. Camera was the K10D with the SMC Pentax-M 28mm F2.8 on it. Had to put the frame because with the white sky it melts with the forum background resulting in something really dull. Also it get's a lot better at bigger size (really like it at full size with my 12" tablet).

@csa I don't see that working out with rubber hoods either, but I would then go for plastic/metal in the long term (as they are more protective anyway, also I allready have one for my 50mm). :-)

Out of curiosity, what filters do you use/what investment do you think is needed?

Thanks for the replies.

I found this about the actual effects of front element scratches and this video about how hard it can be to actually get them https: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzOLbMPe0u8 (allthough this might be different with other shapes of front element and a non-flexible surface)... and now I'm considering to use no filter at all. But it still feels "dangerous" every time I do it. Maybe I might get used to it.

I was also pointed towards this list of pentax lenses. I think I'll be enough with 62mm and totally save with 67mm, beeing a 77mm the overkill needed in case I might win the lottery. :D

Interesting stuff. Is it significantly faster to take away compared to the lens cap? (With the rubber hood I can use that).

Hi folks!

I have a question regarding filters. I've heard that using cheap uv filters is bad for IQ. Is it really such a big deal for somebody with a little skills and modest equipment?
(Pentax K10D with old manual 50mm/1.8 and 28/2.8 lenses and planning to get the plastic wonders and the 18-135 and maybe upgrading to a K-50 over the next months/years).

Having a limited budget, I wonder what my options are. Here is what I've come up with:

-Buy ONE good (expensive) and BIG UV filter.

-Use step-up filters to use this single filter on all my lenses. (Would apply for any other type of filters too.)

I see two problems:

1) Extra step required when changing lenses ... as I would need to change the lens and then the filter. Don't like it. But it's the only option I see to use a good UV filter. I can't afford to spend 100€ on top of every new lens I buy (can't even afford 50€. Well I could. But it would mean taking that money from future lens investments and just seems exagerate).

2) Problems using hoods I have one rubber hood which I would have to throw away. Besides that, metal hoods with outer filter rings should be usable with step-up rings shouldn't they?

Does anybody work like this? Is it a good system? And as we are at it: What filter size would you recommend for this purpose? (=What would be the biggest but still common filter size?) and can you recommend a specific good filter (preferably a still more or less affordable one)?

Some people say UV filters shouldnt be used at all... I understand that every extra glass brings IQ problems, but I also think I need the protection of a filter... even if it's more psychological then real. So I've ruled the no filter option out for now.

Thanks a lot! :)

How to use the lens hood calculator?

Hello!

On my reasearch to get proper hoods for my lenses I've found the lens hood calculator which looks awesome... but I don't know how to use it.

Could somebody help me?

I want to calculate the hood for my Pentax-M 28/2.8.

So, Film Format Height and Film Format Width should be 15,70 and 23,60 right? (APS-C Sensor). Focal length is trivial. Now Hood Front Inner Diameter and Lens Front Outer Diameter are confusing to me. What are these values and where can I get them? I guess hood front inner diameter would be the "filter" diameter of the hood (so if I find a hood that needs a 58mm cap, the value for Hood Front Inner Diameter would be 58mm?) and Lens Front Outer Diameter the diameter of the front element of the lens? If so, do you know a ressource to find this piece of information?

Thank you very much!

. But be warned, "after you have heared northern soul, nothing really quite cuts it" (probably not even a Pentax FF!). :)

* Personally I would recommend a different order, but this is perfectly ok. And yeah, it's a 500-Song playlist. That's because it's impossible to narrow down this absolutely wounderful music.

I don't know what to think about this photo. It's one of the betters I took after a long time without doing photos and I quite like it. I'm missing some more pure white, but if I seek it in the background I loose nice detail in the sky (which looks dull) and if I touch the Lighthouse itself I get (even more) flares which I don't know how to avoid.

Also the original idea was to have a friend climb the ladder, but in the end she didn't want to do it, so I took the foto without her. Would have been nicer with that element but well, it is how it is.

Whats your opinion? Be ruthless! :)

EDIT: The photo is gotten a bit darker while exportation.

I was talking about beeing forced to sell a lens because there are no compatible up-to-date bodies anymore compared to the case where you keep using that objective because "your" company is still there producing new cameras. I see a loss in the first scenario. Both in terms of usage (because you won't be able to fully use it as long as you planned) and finance (because the price will drop if the lens is not compatible with present and future gear anymore).

Couple of friends met got together with their wifes/husbands after a couple of beers, so you could say it has a monetary value after post-processing. A negative one! :p
