My K3 also does the same - I have noticed it is more likely to occur when turning the camera off before a photo has finished processing to memory when in live-view or if I have been using it for many photos taken in a short time (ie bracketing). Simply popping out the battery is the cure. I have had it happen with fully charged batteries as well as half-spent batteries. GPS is always on as well.
I have learned to live with it....maybe someday a firmware update may address this. All in all though - I will continue to shoot with Pentax - just comfortable with the camera and its feel.

I thought about just whacking the heck out of it and hoping that dust (and not internal components) would shift. This is one of two lenses I routinely use so to have this isn't too good... I already checked and the basic repair is roughly $212. I do have a nice 17-70mm I will be using but have come to like the extra 15mm that this lens provides. I will think about getting this lens cleaned, using some money from my K-1 fund, of course this lens is not a full-format lens so I may just bite the bullet and keep using SnapHeal on my photos.

I have had a Pentax 16-85mm lens for three years now... Somehow - a white microfibre is inside the lens. I have double-checked it and sure enough - it is there. Of all places - near the center of the lens. I also noticed that there are other specs of dust/crud inside the lens at various levels throughout the lens itself. I have also noticed this little spec for the past few months. I have had the sensor of my K-3ii professionally cleaned, cleaned the lens as well and the little bugger would keep showing in my photos - slowly creeping from somewhere to nest in the middle of the glass....
What steps would one recommend? If this is a sealed lens - how did the crud get inside? Photo is a crop - the fiber is near center of the pic.
The second pic shows the best I could do with an iphone and a flashlight - but one can see the little white specs of crud inside the lens itself.
Any ideas/options?

To answer MarkJerling's question - There are a few things that could be added such as a "night mode"; ability to dim the rear display down even more in dark settings; "focus bracketing" where the auto-focus system would give a slight focus shift either before or after (or both) on the central point of focus; ability to bracket seven exposures; longer timer; live-view stay active when switching between it and the menu; timer-countdown on the rear screen.
As for open-source firmware - not saying that... - open-source is a two-edged sword...it can add cool features but the risk is very high that something will go wrong and you get a Pentax paperweight.
One more - I read many examples in this thread of what features have been brought to the K-1 in firmware updates. What about the K3ii - it is still available for sale (although it is soon to be discontinued).
Not knocking Pentax cameras as they are - but the Ricoh folks seems to only work on their latest model(s) and ignore (but still sell) the others unless there is a major bug - then it is squashed but no features added.

Hey all,
I recently heard a podcast (PetaPixel) that spoke of the wonderful things Fuji is doing for their cameras with firmware updates - not just their new cameras but their older ones as well. I own three Pentax cameras and rarely (if ever) see anything like this for the cameras. I currently have as my primary a K3ii and it has potential - but - I see that Pentax will most likely not have anymore updates for it as it is soon to be replaced. I remember recently filling out a survey for firmware software feature requests (Thread to collect easy firmware improvement suggestions (software feature requests) - Page 7 - PentaxForums.com) but doubt if this will occur for the K3ii....just looking at the Pentax track record of no added bonuses after a while. The only thing I ever see are "stability fixes" and fixes for lens issues.
I feel that being a loyal Pentaxian has its benefits and its limitations. Limitations include fewer third-party lenses (Sigma has some killer glass on the market but has basically ignored Pentax recently - save for a scant few lenses) and accessories. Benefits are reliability in crud weather and easy to handle. Also a very low learning curve from model to model.
Does anyone feel the same about firmware or is it just me? I have invested lots of money into Pentax cameras and lenses - hate to see the cool features on the new models only - but this does get one to upgrade camera hardware sooner...

Just switched from the Op-Tech to the Peak Design. Love it!! In "sling mode" it doesn't bounce around like the Op-Tech did. It is very strong and for me - was worth every penny. I purchased the SL-2 and an extra set of anchor points. Have three points on the camera: one in each strap lug and a third on my L-Plate. I normally use the strap as a sling so only one lug and the plate anchors are used. This keeps the camera from moving/swinging when I am hiking. All of my camera bodies now have the anchors on them and I don't think I am going to be looking at a different strap for many, many years. As for cutting through the strap - would have to be a very sharp knife to cut through the material of the strap and (as Tako Kichi said) - if they want the camera bad enough...
The Op-Tech strap - a great strap - very comfortable. The sling part works adequately. The downfall of it (and what the Peak Design does NOT do) is that - when hiking, the camera likes to swing around. When I saw the Peak Design videos and how they claimed the camera would not move - I thought I will try it. It worked perfectly. Just my two cents.

Wow!! Great ideas from all!!
Didn't think of a trash bag for the backpack - definitely taking one (excellent idea). I will be packing a full-sized carbon tripod with rubber feet. I wanted to get into the upper canyon as well but the tours (all - photo and regular) were sold out for next week so it looks like Marble Canyon may be on the agenda as well. It is also great to see that the 16-85 lens is a good call (with the 10-20 as a backup) as well as the bracketing (HDR). I like the way HDR is coming to age today and actually being used as a tool to enhance a photo and bring out the hidden things in the shadows and tone down the highlights. And - I have been beyond pleased with the 16-85 lens. Great hints and tips from everyone!
All-in-all - I think that this will be a wonderful and memorable experience and one that I will definitely repeat in the future. This is my third trip to the area, second with a camera, and first with a partner who encourages me to enjoy capturing the world through a lens (She's a keeper!!!).

Great advice!! I am definitely planning on the 10-20mm for Horseshoe Bend. Just going to do the best I can. I and definitely taking the tripod. I have started using it for nearly every shot I take and the pictures are showing the difference.
I have already packed the blower and a soft brush. And - using two bodies so I will not change lenses during the outing. When I am in Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon - not too worried about dust or dirt. Another little ditty I have - an "L" bracket for each camera. I want to be able to change camera position from portrait to landscape asap and these are definitely the cat's meow.
Sounds like the 16-85 will also be getting a good workout. Also - the bracketing sounds like I am on the right track. If I do HDR - I will have the pics.
Just trying to get as much planning down as possible. I will not be able to get back out again for at least 3 years and I don't want to have any regrets about what "might have" or I "should have" (like I did when I was in Utah/Arizona last - about 7 years ago).
I am definitely hoping for a great time. Thanks for the input - it is well read, appreciated and understood.

Hello! I am going to be in Lower Antelope Canyon in a couple of weeks - taking the "Photographer's Tour". Due to time - I had to choose between Upper or Lower - lower was the winner as I have heard many people say and even more post/blog/write about the crowding at the Upper canyon. That being said - saw many comments regarding dusty conditions, low light, etc.
So - I am planning on two cameras - a K5-iis with a Sigma 10-20mm and a K3-ii with a Pentax 16-85mm. Sturdy tripod, extra batteries, lens cloths, blower, etc. I will have a wired remote but am not planning on using it - instead opting for a two-second timer with bracketing turned on (good idea or not?)
Also - not planning on a polarizer as it will probably be dark and not too much glare (yes/no?). I also plan on shooting at ISO-100 as I want the pics to be as clear as possible
Any hints/tips/suggestions on this setup is greatly appreciated - especially since I have been looking forward to this chance and I won't get another chance for at least three years. By-the-way - will be stopping at Horseshoe Bend before and after the Antelope Canyon stop...

My two cents...
My personal preference - a split - a K-1V and a K-1P (or whatever model you prefer "P" and "V"). Same body, same sensor - different computer. One geared toward the photographic market and one to video. Each would still have abilities to do both - but the majority of processing/features/buttons/programming goes to one or the other. There are many people who like to use a DSLR for video - they can purchase the "V" version. There are many more that use a DSLR for pictures only - hence the "P" version.
Personally, I would like to see a DSLR focus less on video and more on the still image - but that is just what I prefer. Your mileage may vary.

I have this lens and love to take sunset pictures. I cannot use the Sigma for these photos as it flares out the yin-yang. I rely on an older Tamron zoom or Pentax 50mm to take sunset pics - neither one flares like the Sigma does.

Just an FYI - North Rim of Grand Canyon is hit and miss until May. Snow closes the road from Jacob's Lake to the North Rim. Visitor's Center is closed until May 15. One suggestion - Zion National. HIGHLY suggest taking east entrance to Zion. Stop at the parking lot before the tunnel, cross the road and take the Canyon Overlook Trail - it is about one mile - round trip. First part is all uphill - usually slick if there was snow. The view is beyond description and definitely worth a panorama or two of the entire Zion Park and canyon.

Lightroom v2 for everything (library, tagging, editing) except panoramics. PSE v8 with Photomerge plugin for assembling panoramics - all other editing in Lightroom. If Lightroom would support the photomerge - would not use PSE at all.

Hello,
For the upgrade from "Home" to "Pro" - not possible.
To add the /3 switch - you will need to edit the boot.ini file - may have to unhide this - open up the Windows file explorer (not internet explorer) and go to 'Tools' -> 'Folder Options' -> click the 'view' tab...make sure that "Show hidden files" is checked and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Click OK. Go back to the file explorer - and find the file 'boot.ini' in the root of "C". MAKE A COPY OF THIS FILE.
Add the /3GB switch

When done - hide the files again (to be safe).
If you have an integrated video card - you can allocate the remaining memory to that - it will process graphics a bit quicker (ie games).
Windows 7 - I have seen and received many reports of it rebooting about 2/3 of the way through installation. The cause is having something other than a keyboard and mouse attached. Make sure that you do not have anything else connected (memory key, printer, card reader) and it loads like a champ.

I will tweak both a little - remove the dust on one and crisp it a bit. The Grand Canyon - I will pop the colors a bit. One thing though - when I printed the Grand Canyon photo, the colors were not as flat - could be the processing software..??..

Sorry about that - the reason for not popping them here was the panoramic size. The Bryce one was originally a 22meg jpeg - the Grand Canyon larger.
Two - Grand Canyon panoramic, Cedar Breaks Canyon. Grand Canyon is a total of 24 shots, Cedar Breaks is a single photo converted in black-and-white to highlight the storm.
The pano had no adjustment except for PhotoMerge. I used a circular polarizer. The one thing I have been using quite a bit is the 'Lally Cap' to nail white balance.

Hello,
I am seeking criticism, opinions, any feedback on two landscapes taken in beautiful Utah.
One panorama, one converted to black and white.
I was very lucky to be in Utah for a week and did a park whirlwind.
All photos were taken from a locked tripod, all had a circular polarizer used as well as a hot-shoe mounted bubble level. The "Lally Cap" was used to set exposure (love that gizmo) and it resulted in VERY MINIMAL computer tweaking - basically - what you see is what I shot.
Revised - see photos below
So - any critique is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My wife is a Special Ed teacher, Masters in Spec. Ed., licensed here in NC for K-12. She has been teaching elementary Special Ed. Pay? We have seen that Utah pays about $10k a year less than NC...but I am not too worried about that. We have made it in the past and we can make it in the future.
