Well, put it this way, it has worked perfectly until now. However, the only other lens which has SDM that I was able to test it on was the damaged 16-50 that it came with, which would only focus using screwdrive as well, not SDM. But seeing as that was the only lens I had with SDM at the time, I put it down to the lens being damaged. It wasn't until I bought this 2nd lens that I realized it was an issue. Whether they didn't fix the SDM when I sent it away, or whether the damage has happened since, I don't know. I was merely trying to find the most likely explanation for the SDM contacts failure.

From what everyone has said, I'd say what's happened is the shorting of the SDM contacts.
Reason being, the camera was originally bought off eBay for about $200 AUD, the previous owner dropped it with reasonable size lens on it, and it would no longer write to the SD card, the lens (a 16-50) wasn't in real good shape either, so I thought seeing as I'd been able to pick them up so cheap, I'd have a shot at repairing them. Eventually I gave up trying to repair it and sent the camera into the official pentax repair people in Australia, and I got it repaired, and since then it has worked perfectly. But I'm thinking, while I was looking at it trying to repair it, I may have shorted out the SDM contacts then, and hence now it will no longer use SDM.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, much appreciated.
Anyone interested in buying a SD only K20?
Otherwise I'l just put up with it as it's not a huge issue, really the only reason I want the SDM back is I just like being able to take photos without feeling like I'm waking the dead.
The camera's not under warranty, so there's not a lot of point in forking out money for repairs at this stage.

Never posted here before. Thought I'd give it a try though.
I've got a K20D and a K200D, just recently I purchased a PENTAX DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED (IF) SDM lens. Now the issue I'm having is that the lens will not focus on the K20D using the SDM drive, it will instead, use the older screwdrive focus every time. However, as soon as I put the lens on the K200D, it will use the SDM focus no problems. SO obviously it's not the lens that's at fault.
Somewhere along the line the camera is assuming the lens doesn't have SDM and is defaulting to screwdrive, but I can't work out why, or how to change it. This is the 2nd lens the camera is doing it on.
I've tried resetting the camera completely, and reloading firmware, but other than that I've run out of options.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
