I am just curious if there are any data about the supply and demand for the camera. Is there any resource telling how many are on pre-order, or how many Ricoh intend to produce per year? Are they giving anything away?

Looking for Honest Opinions: Leaving Pentax for Wildlife?

Just my 2 cents worth. I heartily agree Pentax options at the long end are very limited. It's a great great shame. With the weather-sealing and ruggedness associated with Pentax, they should be wiping the floor in the wildlife department, or at least, being contenders, not a sideshow.

So, I've had a look through some of the old catalogue, and see some gems in there (all of which seem very hard to find used):

F* 600mm f/4
F* 250-600 f/5.6
FA* 300 f/2.8
FA* 400 f/5.6
FA* 600mm f/4
FA* 250-600 f/5.6

Optically, they seem to be pretty sweet, so how hard would it be for Ricoh to ressurect some of these designs with updated AF systems? Add to this, a 400mm f/2.8, a 400mm f/4 and perhaps a 200-400 f/4

I think it's sorely needed and long overdue.

Why won't Pentax go full retro?

Aha, yes, well spotted. Thanks for paying attention! But, you see I have to be pragmatic. The price I got the k-3 ii for is ridiculous - way lower than I would pay for a KP :)

Well, you are quite right, but it's about the bottom line in this case. The price was irresistible. I'll be shedding a K-5.

Thanks, I look forward to trying it out. Particularly the GPS - I'm so sick of not knowing where photos were taken. And the flu card - interested to see how it works.

And if I seem inconsistent, well, I've just ordered a nice old MX as well :)

Why won't Pentax go full retro?

You should never go full retro right? Wrong.

Fuji have launched a range of cameras with shutter dials, aperture rings, iso dials, EC dials, and folks just dig them. I don't know anyone that doesn't. For me at least, they look awesome, they feel natural and you always know what your camera is thinking - so photography is easier. Not quite so with the all electronic, two stepped interface we are used to. By two stepped I mean, you are a control step further back from the raw control that real retro cameras give you.
I mean look at the X100 series, look at the XT-1, the X-pro 1 etc. They're so damn right. And that's why people are buying them in droves. Ok, the Nikon Df, was off mark, silly mistake - due to trying to integrate too much automation within retro styling. Hence, too many design conflicts.

So, with the KP, which seems to have a lot of folks scratching heads saying, where does it sit? Is it a K-3 ii replacement? No, it can't be, etc. I think it would have made a lot of sense if Pentax had made this FULL RETRO, with some real top level controls (by top level I mean direct, one level of input) a la Fujifilm and then we would have had a winner.
As it is, it seems to exist in parallel, the frankenstein offspring of a K-70 and a K-3ii with K-1 styling cues. Duh-what? Why? If you are going to launch a new product it has to be something new for people to want it. At least, new enough. And here, well, maybe a better IBIS is nice, and maybe nice to have wifi, but this doesn't seem to be nearly new enough to sway me away from the already excellent K-3 ii or K-70 which kind of do the same thing, almost exactly. If these were cars, this would be like a choice between heated seats and electric windows. Not a choice between the automatic and the manual - when the manual is what we were really after!!

Doh, Pentax, you could have done it so well. Gotta go full retro.

Yes that too. Perhaps an integrated flash trigger and wifi, whilst we're at it.
Oh and for them to get rid of cross-processing and filter effects clutter.

That would be moi. Sorry, I was just pretty taken aback and thought folks might be interested. I have referred to his site many times. His Nikon database is pretty encyclopedic. I generally try to look past the hyperbole, but this time I just couldn't. I'm not personally offended (don't even mind the Asperger's remarks) but I am truly offended for Pentax. When I think of the hundreds (thousands?) of people who've devoted years of their life to a project like this, and then they get binned by someone who hasn't even seen the product. Especially when the company has been struggling to keep up over the last few years, and IMO are producing pound-for-pound the best DSLRs on the market at great prices, which shows a lot of passion and a lot of guts. That sucks.

Will you leave APS-C for the K1?

I can't see any compelling reason to get the K-1, for my needs. I guess the image quality will not be massively ahead of the K-3 ii. As it stands, it is basically a K-3 ii on steroids with a slower fps. Add to this, the K-3 ii is available for less than half the price of the K-1. Add to this the K-3 ii is smaller, lighter and allows a longer focal reach with the same lens, allowing a much more portable package. As soon as I can justify it I'd get a K-3 ii, that's if poor old Lazarus dies (my K-5 is called Lazarus since he has died twice and come back). The IQ from the K-5 is already stellar.

Praise for Pentax color

Just wanted to relate a little story. Today I was helping an artist photograph his paintings. It's a very fiddly process if you want to do it well. We tried with his D3200, fiddled for ages, couldn't get a proper WB, even with a white card under studio lights. Having done our best, we couldn't get a decent red. Reds became orange, no matter how much we tweeked the WB and color settings. I tried it on the K5, set to auto WB and vivid color, and it came out utterly perfect, first shot. No perceptible difference between the painting and the image on the camera. We were both pretty amazed by this. High praise to Pentax. He is, needless to say considering trading in the Nikon.

One of the reasons I got the 15 was to try star trails. Here's my first effort. About 150 exposures in here.

I really don't understand this 'fear' that I sense, this "should I buy one or not", "what if the company goes out of business in a few years", "what if no-one else has one"... It's really bizarre. What is the deal? If the product is great and it does what you need then just buy one!! If the company goes out of business, you don't have to give it back!!! You can keep it foreverrrrr, and all the lenses will not vanish off the market either. There is nothing whatever at stake.

The FF Pentax (my prediction) is going to be a big hit, will most likely be in short supply for the first 12 months, and will send the market wild.
