Works fine with both AI and AIs nikkors.

Not worth using it that way traveling to Finland though.fine for use where you control the environment.i broke one that felt reasonably secure to let go momentarily.

The focus still happens at f/2.8 unless it is a very old lens like a takamar that you stop down by manually twisting the aperture ring.

Thematic Butterflies and Moths

I have been learning about all the variations of this family of butterflies.

From Wiki. Lycaenidae is the second-largest family of butterflies (behind Nymphalidae, brush-footed butterflies), with over 6,000 species worldwide,[1] whose members are also called gossamer-winged butterflies. They constitute about 30% of the known butterfly species.

The family comprises seven subfamilies, including the blues (Polyommatinae), the coppers (Lycaeninae), the hairstreaks (Theclinae), and the harvesters (Miletinae).

I have now photographed 4 of the 6000. The number of spots of orange and where they are, can help in identification.

Sharpness Expectation 55-300mm PLM

I was shooting a fox at similar distance and I had 2 reasonably sharp photos when zoomed in. I had many that ranged from very blurry to almost having a clear eye glint.
Try for many shots to get lucky with focus. Even in perfect conditions when calibration for focus adjustment, don't trust it was right with one try.

If you want that bird in focus from that distance you need about a 2000 shutter speed. Also at about 270mm cropped is probably better. At the point where the aperture jumps.

Is this in a bright place? At 300mm you lose light needed to focus. You also don't mention on what you are trying to focus. I don't believe these are the cause but can't rule them out.

There is a new car commercial on the hockey game tonight.

"This camera was given to me at your age and now I give it to you."

Too quick for me to identify but I think it says asahi above Pentax.I was looking at that so close I can't remember any black on it.

It looks s a Toyota add.

Who NEEDS A Lens That's Weather-Sealed?

In my cases with the 40xs and the 150 takumar I think the camera seals on top played a very big part in protection. I think the takumar grooves to make turning dials easy actually channeled drops into my camera.

When I replaced the solenoid, I found water had seeped in under the screws beneath the camera strap. I suspect the strap holds moisture a long time against these seals. I take extra care to dry them or even remove the straps now.

It is my best guesses from my perspective. However, I forgot what rain was over the last 2 years. Everything is dry here

If The 40xs was WR, I would have sworn up and down that it saved my camera. I think most people do but it is only one point of seal. However a longer lens like the takumar probably funneled the water in. The 40xs really can't.

It points out nuance to the question. I know WR is useless while shooting up at birds because only raindrops on the lens get photographed.

I use wr and I feel better but I question how useful it has been. We can't say our camera would have died without wr anymore than I can say my camera didn't die because I had the 40xs on it.

It would be more interesting to know when failures happened to cameras with and without weather sealing. There is too much confirmation bias otherwise.

I have tested mine multiple times. even with the 40xs, it was fine. That says mostly not needed even in a storm with an inch of rain an hour coming down. I did use my ks2 in light mist with an m42 adaptor and a Takumar 150 and water got in.

Yep, My 40xs not weather sealed survived a rain like this for a 30 minute walk and many more times in New Orleans sudden downpours. I sensibly shot this from inside my door. (with a non- weather sealed Sigma 18-24.

This is a way to frame that I rarely use except subtlety. It is funny that my avatar does use it and my latest photo on flickr.

I find the light and dark colors shooting out in the negative space bringing energy and cohesion to the stationary elements. It is like rebar in concrete. (Has negative space been addressed yet?)

About the same reason I need a 100mm lens. I need it for some shots I shoot. I needed it yesterday to shoot roses in the rain. I don't need it today.

WR and AW and no sealing are just as interchangeable as lenses as it is dependent on the lens anyway.

If you go to inatualist and explore European preying mantis in Mass you find 277 observations mostly between 2018-2022 and maybe 17 this year. Most observations are aug-oct in past years so it seems normal.

In MN I never saw one but I searched for fireflies last night, I saw 2 instead of 100-200 30 years ago. In the last 3 years I have gone from seeing a few robber flies per year to over 50 and at least 3 species. I even had one catch a fly and land on my hand today.

I have also seen 4 species not seen here even 2 years ago and where I saw 500+ bees, I now see less than 50. I spend 3-5 hours in the field every day.

I haven't seen a firefly in 20 years and they were rare then. 40 years ago they were abundant.
Right now in Minneapolis we have artic birds fleeing the wildfires. They probably couldn't successfully nest. Both pelicans and yellowlegs are here now. Normally they are only seen during migration.

Another interesting fact is that the Kestrel migration is tied to the dragonfly migration.

Sigma 70mm F/2.8 DG Macro EX - Is Lens Hood Essential?
Posted By swanlefitte

I never use the lens hood. It is not deep and a pain to screw on. The lens is deep anyway. As a macro, the hood would interfere with the light way more than help.

I also like to put the cap on after a shot because I am often in weeds and the hood makes that a pain.

I have never used this lens for landscapes but it might help there. I also use it on an apsc and the hood is meant for full frame so not deep enough that my hand isn't a better shade.

I'm my use, I have never noticed flair w/o the hood. A great lens.
