Thanks again everyone, I really appreciated the honest advice based on your expereinces. I am looking at getting the K3 mkiii bundled with the 20-40 lens, and then maybe add some more lenses down the line like a faster 50. I was trying them both in the shop yesterday and I really noticed the weight of the K1 - the K3 just felt better in my hands. Again really appreciate the help!

I am in Japan and use Amazon here regularly. They are safe and reliable. The Pentax k70 double zoom kit is in stock and available next day delivery. Current price is ¥74,565, which seems cheap to you because of the stupid exchange rate right now

The Sigma 10-20 gives outstanding results and can be picked up at a reasonable price second hand. If I only had one lens this would be it!

Another vote for the DA21, its almost perfect fov for landscapes on an APSC, perhaps slightly tight. but I find the 15mm is just too wide unless you have a good foreground.

I needed better subject isolation for portraits, and I was glad I did - there is a significant difference.

It looks like you are someone who is looking for a camera that you can use for the long term. In this case pay the extra and get the KP or K3ii (not the K3). Avoid the K70 because of potential apeture blcok issues as it gets older.

I've dabbled in video for a while. First with my k30, then K3. Then I moved on to a Canon 6d. I've also played around with a Go Pro Hero 7. However, now I find I get get the best results with a Panasonic camcorder. I use it for my home videos as well as making teaching videos for work. In contrast to the current thinking I find the quality I get from a camcorder (as an amateur) better than from a DSLR.
For editing I really like Open Shot, its open source and really easy to use.

I do street portraits in Japan. I have found the best places to go to are tourist places. People are a lot more friendly and relaxed than they would be on their way to work or similar. I just hang around and when I see someone who catches my eye I just say "Hi, you look great. I am going to take your photo" and that's it. I have never had any problems. I am currently doing the 100 stranger challenge on Flickr where I write about my experiences. People are FAR more open to having their photo taken then you think!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am choosing between the FA35 and DA35 2.8macro - both are similarly priced here. The 31 ltd is a nice thought but just out of my price range. I have the da21 which I use occasionally but find it a little wide for my style of shooting. Hopefully one of these 35s will be my New Years present. Thanks again!

Will your budget stretch to the sigma 17-50 2.8? I am not sure of the prices in the UK but this is a great lens with silent focusing. Also its 2.8 so bright enough for indoor use. There is also the Sigma 17-70 which may be slightly cheaper.

Thanks everyone for your comments and ideas - and helping me spend some money! It looks like I will be going with the DA15. There are a lot around here second hand at a reasonable price. I will see if I can pick one up this weekend... exciting times!

Hi Rojaba,
I have also just opened an Instagram account. Until recently I have been using only Flickr and Facebook to share photos. Flickr for general public and Facebook more for freinds and aquaintances. However, recently I have noticed a shift away from Facebook towards Instagram, particularly amongst younger people - so I have decided to give it a try. Anyway, I would like to add you and anyother Pentaxians who have instagram accounts! Thanks
My instagram ID is "pond2803"
Just in case my Flickr is https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamstairs/
Cheers!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments. I am going to keep my eyes open for a secondhand K70. Second hand models are getting more common here, and coming down in price. I am looking forward to seeing the IQ and having a play with a new camera. Plus being slightly smaller and lighter will be beneficial for hiking. Thanks again for your help!

The Ukimido temple building was constructed to house a 1000 statues of Buddha following a vision by the monk Genshin during the Heian period (749-1185).It is also considered important as one of the remaining views of the 'Eight Views of Omi', originally drawn by Hiroshige.
This photo is a combination of two shots stitched together and it was taken in the rain.

Thanks for the advice. I will see if the warranty covers this. I will get a new battery and if it happens again in the near future I will take it in to get fixed. Thanks once again for the feedback.

The Samyang tends to be used for astrophotography because it is faster and wider than the DA15. However, for daytime use you will find it soft at 2.8 and lacking in contrast - it is only really usable F4 and above (wonderful from 5.6). However, it also suffers from considerable distortion. If I wasn't shooting night sky I would go for the Pentax.

There are many festivals during the summer months in Japan. Fireworks were originally used to ward off evil spirits. These days they are a big part of the summer celebrations leading up to Obon - the Japanese festival of the dead when the spirits of ancestors return to their hometowns.

Just a +1 for the possibility of it being an SD card issue. Way back I had a couple of instances of lock up on my K30 with an older SD card where reinserting the battery solved the problem. Since changing to an ultra fast Transcend card the problem has disappeared. So might be worth trying a different card and see what happens.
