Upgrade route K3 mkiii or K1 mkii

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciated the honest advice based on your expereinces. I am looking at getting the K3 mkiii bundled with the 20-40 lens, and then maybe add some more lenses down the line like a faster 50. I was trying them both in the shop yesterday and I really noticed the weight of the K1 - the K3 just felt better in my hands. Again really appreciate the help!

Upgrade route K3 mkiii or K1 mkii

Maybe you can help me. I am going backwards and forward these two cameras and just can't make up my mind. I have been using an old K3 for the past 6 years which is fantastic but its time for an upgrade (and it's Christmas!) They are both the same price here in Japan.

I do a bit of everything: portraits, landscape, walk around, street/ street portraits, hiking, family, occasionally astro, and even the odd bird or two. But mostly I will use it for portraits, street and walk around.

For the KI mkii, I really like the shallow DOF a 50mm prime on a fullframe for portraits (I have an old 6D) and want to get this look with a Pentax. It has a flippy screen for astro and landscape. Better low light?

For the K3 mkiii its smaller, a little lighter and newer. Maybe better AF for portraits and street?

Here is my current lens list. Any comments or experiences welcome!

DA 21 f3.2
DA 35 f2.4
DA 40 f2.8 xs
DA 50 f1.8

DA 18-135 f3.5-5.6

DAL 55-300 F4-5.8

FA100 F2.8 Macro (FF)
FA300 F4.5 (FF)

Sigma 18-50 f2.8
Sigma 10-20 f3.5

Samyang 14mm f2.8 (FF)

Very nice. Would you say the benefits of the k3iii astrotracer outweigh the benefits if a full frame sensor of the k1 ii? I am looking at both at the moment for astro- currently using an old k3.

Thanks I appreciate the responses.

Movies will be shared with students and used for training. Occasionally uploaded to the university website. Quality needs to be reasonable but not corporate.

Not really low light but some events take place in the evening in subdued lighting. I won't be editing or color grading much - don't need a log profile or anything like that :)

Sound is quite important. I usually use a shotgun mic and a lav mic at times, so definitely need a mic input.

I know what you mean about the GoPro. It's a good idea but there are a few occasions where I need to Zoom in so I am not right on top of everyone.

Cheers

I have been given some grant money at my university to buy some video equipment. The equipment will be used by me to record classes, student presentations, discussions, project work and events (where it will be handheld). The videos are used mainly within our university but also sometimes uploaded to the website, however 4k is not necessary.

At present I am using a Panasonic camcorder on a tripod with a shotgun mic. The camera is old and is having focus issues so I need to replace it.

I have 175,000yen ( I am in Japan) roughly equivalent to a little over a 1,000 dollars.Unfortunately I doubt there is a sensible Pentax solution. Do I just get another camcorder or go with a mirrorless? If so which one? It needs to be reliable, not overheat, have good CAF, and stay in focus.

Any help or thoughts or experiences greatly valued!!

I am in Japan and use Amazon here regularly. They are safe and reliable. The Pentax k70 double zoom kit is in stock and available next day delivery. Current price is ¥74,565, which seems cheap to you because of the stupid exchange rate right now

Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX HSM

Not a Pentax lens but this is on my K3 almost permanently. Perfect range for almost evrything I do such as street, travel and landscape. Sharp, tough as nails, but heavy. Always paired with my Sigma 10-20mm. If I only had one lens this would be it!

Using Pentax lenses on Canon mirrorless RF mount

Hi all,
Does anyone have experience of using Pentax lenses on the Canon full-frame mirrorless system? I am upgrading from my old 6D to one of the R Cameras and wondered if I would be able to use some of my Pentax lenses? There is a Pentax K mount to R mount adapter available so it seems possible for full-frame lenses, manually obviously, but what about the DA lenses? Any thoughts?

Which long lens for astrophotography?

Hi all,

I am looking to get a longer lens for deep sky astrophotography such as the Andromeda galaxy. I read 200mm on an APSC is a good focal length, so I am looking for something along these lines for my K3.

It's a little expensive but is the Pentax DA200 f2.8 the best option? I would be looking at buying second-hand.

Thanks!

Are Rules Of Composition Useful?

The rule of thirds is just one of those things that has been repeated so often as to have become a thing. Originally it was just meant to be advice not to place the horizon in the middle of the page in a painting. It has become far more important than it should be. Ignore it!!

Thanks for the ideas, much appreciated. I can see myself just getting another GR, maybe second-hand. I know that whatever else I get isn't going to deliver the picture quality! Thanks, again!

Tough compact camera for the mountains.

My trusty Ricoh GR has finally given up on me after 5 years of extensive use. I have been using it for mountaineering, hiking, and camping. It took fantastic pictures but I think the abuse has finally taken its toll. I am considering replacing it with a tough camera that is more suited to the conditions. I like to keep the camera in my pocket and take shots as I climb. I have a K3 but even with the da21 it's just too heavy and bulky for how I want to use it.

My biggest concern is losing RAW ability and general picture quality. Does anyone have a tough compact that takes good shots? I don't need a zoom. 28mm is a perfect fov for what I need. I have been using Pentax/Ricoh for many years but am open to other brands.

Ricoh GR freezing

My old Ricoh GR appears to have developed a problem. When I start it after it has been off for a while it freezes open. If I take the battery out and put it back it seems to reset itself and then works fine. It continues to work ok until it is off for an hour or more and then the problem returns.

I have replaced the battery, cleaned the contacts, and tried different cards but the problem is still there. This is the original GR with the 5.01 firmware update.

Anything else I can try or is my trusty GR on its way out?

Favorite Limited Lens for Landscapes?

Another vote for the DA21, its almost perfect fov for landscapes on an APSC, perhaps slightly tight. but I find the 15mm is just too wide unless you have a good foreground.

Favorite body and lens for street photography

I do street portraits and really like the 50mm equivalent fov. In the past, I used a Pentax K30 and K3 with the da35mm 2.4. The da35 is a wonderful lens that focuses very quickly. Now I prefer to use a Canon ff with a 50 mm lens because the AF is more accurate.

Which camera for Astrotracer function?

Hi everyone. I am a little unclear on which cameras have the Astrotracer GPS function actually built into the camera.

Am I right in assuming that the Pentax K3ii and KP have the Astrotracer GPS function built-in and if I wouldn't need to get the attachable GPS unit? However, with the K70 pr K3, I would need to get the GPS unit separately for the Astrotracer function to work?

Thanks,

Another shoutout for the Sigma 10-20mm. This is an outstanding lens. Also, consider the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 if you don't mind the weight. Both lenses give fantastic image quality and can be picked up cheaply second hand.

I just had a look at my Explored photos to see if there was a theme. I have 15 photos in Explore most of which are Landscape and were taken with Pentax.

K3 + Sigma 10-20 - landscape - 3 pics
K3 + Sigma 10-20 - street - 1 pic
Ricoh gr - landscape - 4 pics
K3 + sigma 17-50 - landscape - 2 pics
K3 + da40xs - street - 1 pic
k30 +da35 f2.4 - street - 1 pic
Canon 6d + ef50mm f1.8 - street - 1 pic
Canon 6d + ef40mm f2.8 - street - 1 pic
Canon 6d + ef40mm f2.8 - landsacpe - 1 pic

I post more street photos than landscape and I also tend to use the Canon more than the Pentax. However, my Pentax photos are the most Explored. The algorithm doesn't lie!
