Samyang 14 2.8 vs Samyang 24 1.4 for Astrophotography

Just a heads up, it's pretty well documented that these Rokinon/Samyang 14mm (and likely others) have pretty terrible QC on the focus ring out of the factory. It will actually go well BEYOND infinite focus, which in turn leads to it looking soft or out of focus. Pretty easy to mechanically correct, or as I do just line up two lines on the focus. Usually if i'm going to just be shooting at infinite I will tape it or something so I don't accidentally bump it. I should fix it properly for convenience but having moved country no longer have all my small tools and am reluctant to buy more crap when in an apartment hah!

Super easy to find where it is, given the lens hits infinite focus at a VERY short length. Anything beyond 3m or so should correlate to infinite (pretty sure it's actually closer).

Just worth mentioning as my 14mm Rokinon is -super- sharp, but had I not read about that and was using infinite focus (honestly it all looks the same through the K1 viewfinder when your subject isn't up close), I would have thought the lens was soft as well.

edit: And there are loads of profiles out there for correcting this lenses distortion of FF, FWIW.

Flash stupidity question

Thanks for the info everyone, understand it a little better now. Although seems mostly pointless unless Pentax has put support for longer than 70mm zooms into their firmware for the K-1? I'm unsure if they have or not but did read through the Metz thread explaining the K-1 refuses to communicate any focal length beyond 70mm and thus the Metz would have to be put into manual mode in that regard anyway.

Really torn, locally I have a place selling the Metz for $440, whereas the Pentax is $600+ anywhere I look (CDN$). Found one on forums, but having Paypal issues due to moving countries. I would like the WR, but honestly I rarely shoot in the rain and if I did i'd probably just slap a sandwich bag over it anyway (i'm not one to stand in the rain if it's bucketing down). Bit of a long shot, but has anybody used both and have some recommendations? Aha.

Flash stupidity question

Ah ok I think I understand now. Wouldn't that mean if it's firing a beam width for 85mm and I was actually using 200mm it would consistently underexpose? Or does it increase power to compensate for this? And if it does compensate, wouldn't the maximum range be -extremely- reduced as a result?

Not that i'd be shooting at 200mm very often, but I definitely would be @ 135mm.

Flash stupidity question

Ahoi,

So i'm a bit daft with flash units and truly have only ever used them for fill lighting at best.

Looking for something with a bit more power, basically just want to buy once and not find myself wanting more power down the line. Helping out with a not for profit and will need a flash for the event, limited space inside and group photos will be impossible with faster primes (which is what I prefer to use). So figured time to bite the bullet and learn some more.

The thing i'm not really sure about is the whole 'zoom' aspect of the units. For example the Metz 64 is 24-200mm whilst the Pentax AF540 is only 24-85mm. Does that mean I can't use most of my 70-200mm length for example with the Pentax? Or does it simply mean the TTL will stop working and i'll need to adjust manually? Or does it mean something completely different?

And yes, I know both those models are probably overkill but basically I just want something I can use for whatever I want to do with them. Plenty of times I have thought i'd have loved to have a flash with me whilst using the 70-200 at the upper end of the range for a little fill lighting (to for example remove a shadow), so i'm sure I will find uses for it.

Appreciate any help/advice! :)

Oh and FWIW, camera gear in Canada is apparently stupidly expensive when you account for taxes... So looking at $440 for the Metz or ~$600 for the Pentax, before 15% tax (assuming you can even find stock).

After talking with CRK as well as a few other retailers the stock status doesn't look overly great guys. I'm still trying to work some magic on the group buy, mostly to try and secure us stock!

Meanwhile, what's going on with the battery grip?....

Only problem with that Brumby is the fact Dirt Cheap Cameras are grey imports. Ie, no Pentax Australia warranty. Whereas Digital Camera Warehouse for $50 or so more offer Australian stock.

It's be worth mentioning we currently have 16 people at the ready Ninja20, of which 10 want body only and 6 are after the kit lens combo (this may change depending on final price of course). Delivery would have to be an option though as some aren't in Sydney or Melbourne...

Yeah just sent away an email to Digital Camera Warehouse who can either ship out or have shops in both Sydney and Melbourne for majority of people to simply pick up. Obviously don't expect reply till monday at the earliest given it's the weekend (not open sunday).

Vanbar currently seeing what they can do with price, and got a few others in the works as well.

Ted's was looking good till they jacked up the price (likely because everyone is interested in it no doubt).

I'm not willing to pay 2 grand for it, blows my budget out massively.

Yeah dunno about that. I just used my internet given one I use for nothing else .

Send either myself or Schmik a message if you're keen. Please don't double up and say yes on each forum though. So far Vanbar is crunching some numbers so we'll see what they say in the next few days. I will likely also give a few other places a call as at the very least we have 10 or so orders keen as right now.

Would like to get it closer to 20 though so if you're keen have to either sign up over there or shoot us a pm here and i'll jot you down.

Cheers!

Yeah CRK is where I plan to start, gives a good indication on what will be the general stance on this. I am hoping Vanbar will get involved as they're a sponsor for us over on the OCAU forums and visit it every day, great for communication purposes.

I'm hoping at the very least 10, which seems to be happening fairly quickly. And 15k or so is hardly a number to scoff at. BUT, if we could get 20, then I reckon we'd be getting somewhere. That would be like 27-30k or so put through, any shop is going to be happy with that. Just depends on what the mark-up is like on them really, and how much room they have to move in price...

Yeah I was going to tell anyone here interested to do this anyways . Oh and Bazz, I hear the admins there smell funny. Ho ho ho. (please don't ban me)

For the record guys, OCAU has a great forum section dedicated to photography, Overclockers Australia Photography Forums.

And the thread i'm going to be keeping official tabs in will be:
Pentax K-7 Group Buy Thread

So if anyone interested signs up and heads over there put your name down if you're keen. Xhanatos and sir_bazz are clearly already members there :P. It's a great little community, not enough Pentaxians there though, we need to crush CANIKON! And for that, WE NEED YOU!

I think we all were! Noted the guys above expressing interest. This all depends on the fact people can't simply decide to pull out cause they change their mind etc. It'd screw with totals and in turn if/how muchc heaper we could get it.

It's a while off yet before it's stocked, so I figure if we get some interest, I can call a few retailers and suss out pricing.

Don't take it as gospel mate, it may well be more like $1600, that was just initially being told. Most places seem to be stocking AROUND $1600 or so, a fair price imo.

Yeah i'll be trying to get some numbers tomorrow (after I finish this assignment, god the release of this camera was bad timing heh) and then will give the call round and see what sort of prices possibly with multiple orders.

So if you're 100% keen let me know. Remember prices arne't fixed yet, so i'd leave a little room for error in the prices given so far.

Yep, quoted at like 950 shots or so iirc. Very impressive figures. Same here, arrival quoted for mid june, might drag out to late june though, who knows. I'm definately going to be trying to organise a Sydney group buy on another forum, will pass over info if it looks like it's going to go ahead.

The grip is going to be weather proof etc if that's what you mean? I'd assume it would be the same "texture" also, at least you'd hope so...

I agree, would like the grip to balance out the bigma, but I think it can wait (as more money makes me cry right now).

If we could get enough interest Vanbar (prices mentioned by pop4 above) may well be able to do us a deal on a "group buy". All a bit up in the air right now, but worth mentioning incase people are interested.

My thoughts exactly, would almost seem crazy not to upgrade, body was just devalue more! Nope didn't even think to ask about the grip sorry, my bank account is shuddering at the thought of this already.

Reckon if we got enough people they could do a significant deal for us? Wishful thinking, but MAYBE!

I agree, there is an NDA on the high iso shots though, as they were also taken with beta firmware, and they don't want images like that released to the public if they're not the best they can be (understandable).

Best to use a download manager to grab them off, still pretty clogged up, but 200kbps with a manager as opposed to maybe 40kbps just trying to load them heh. Lots of people checking them out I guess.
