I recently sorta-kinda came back to the Pentax fold after a decade-long absence, as a proud owner of a Ricoh GRiiix. It's amazing this thread is still going! Great job, I almost miss that lens.

Ricoh GR RAW edit in Lightroom with PERFECT in-camera color : PerfeFilm GR profiles

I should add, if you have Reallyniceimage's v5 profiles, I think some of their Kodak Portra emulations-- especially "Kodak Portra 160 v2" get in the right ballpark in terms of tone and color. Less of an exact match than the perfefilm emulation though.

I actually took a $10 chance on the profiles. In terms of matching the original jpeg styles of the Ricoh GR3x that I have, they are quite a good match under most situations, certainly about as good as I would expect from a 3rd party vendor.

However, if you make heavy use of the highlights or shadows sliders, you should be aware that extreme values on certain images get "strange" with a flat, washed out, artificial look that can be disconcerting.

And yes, this is apparently my first post on this forum since 2012.

All the people who said it practically has a built in polarizer ... are right!

The replicas of the Nina and Pinta were in town.

Metz 58 af2. It's about the same price as the AF540, and has more features and more power. It can also do automatic (thyristor) flash if you are using a manual lens.

It's more money than you want to spend, but if you're serious about flash you'll probably end up buying it anyway.

Lightroom and Aperture (if you have a Mac) have very nice global and regional sharpening.

The others have sharpening as well, but I haven't used them as much and can't comment.

Bibble (now Aftershot) had the weakest sharpening built in, but a number of plugins to enhance or replace the built in sharpening.

Just about everybody has free trials so you can try before you buy.

You've just described Silkypix-- or at least the last version that I tried-- to a tee. Barely translated from the Japanese, confusing help, poor layout, and slow!

Lightroom 4.1 full version: $149
Aperture 3.3 full version: $80
DXO Standard*: $99 (normally $169.)
DXO Elite: $199 (normally $299, but doesn't appear to support any camera made by Pentax anyway.)
Capture One Pro: $179
Aftershot Pro (formerly Bibble Pro): $60.

Note, these are all FULL, NON UPGRADE prices. Admittedly, some of them are limited time promotions, but all of them are significantly cheaper than the quoted Silkypix upgrade price.

I am genuinely curious, as it has been several years since I played with Silkypix-- what does it bring to the table that the others can't compete with?

For $272 you could buy two (or more, depending on sales!) top tier raw converters.

Heck, Capture One Pro is currently cheaper than that.

What lens should I extend for my K-5

DFA 100 for shooting butterflies.

For fireworks, a medium wide to normal lens with a tripod You don't really need "fast"-- and depth of field shouldn't be an issue at those distances, but you'll want to shoot them with relatively long exposures. I like ~2 seconds, which means a tripod.

This was shot with a 35mm macro at f/4.5 and iso 400, 2 seconds. Nothing magical about those settings-- I wanted ISO at 400 in case I wanted to take non-fireworks pics, and the 35 needed to be stopped down to make those settings. Could have easily been ISO 150ish at f/2.8, if I did my math right. I would have, in hindsight, preferred a wider angle lens.

Fisheyes are ... unique. And if you are buying one with the thoughts of defishing the image, you're probably better off just getting a wide angle lens such as the 12-24 you mentioned.

I had this problem once-- turned out in my case I had the flash mode set to wireless mode. It was trying to trigger a flash that wasn't there!

Here's hoping your problem is something simple!

I suppose. If your April 1st standards are really, really, really low.

Perhaps then it would be more fun to, on April 1st, sneak up behind someone and whack them on the head with a baseball bat, while screaming "April Fools, sucker!"?

I guess I must be in the minority, cause I don't think meanness = funny.

Are you replying to me? Did you read my message? I don't want a FF Pentax (have one, thanks.) And I still think it was not funny.

I know funny. Spaghetti trees is funny. Ancient Nikon Bokehmeter is funny. Google's autocomplete being done by a guy who types really fast? Funny!Made up specs for K-3? Not so much ...

Don't get me wrong. I love jokes. Japes, jests, gotchas, etc. First thing I do on April 1 is go look at what fun things google's put up. And I have no interest in a FF Pentax, so I don't have a dog in that race.. The problem is, what Pentaxforums did was not a joke. It just wasn't. There was no punchline. It wasn't funny. It was just a mean-spirited trick.

Now, had they announced that the K-3 was coming, but that it had an 8x10" sensor and cost $150,000, or that it hovered, or that it used complex algorithms to automatically delete badly composed pictures ... now that would have been funny, or at least, mildly amusing.

"Joke" might be too tactful a word.

Generally, April Fool's jokes have punchlines of sorts, or some sort of escalating silliness that reveals themselves.

What PentaxForums put up was just nasty teasing.

Kind of like saying to someone: "Hey, I bought you a cake." "Really?" "Nah, just kidding. April Fools!"

Or, "Congratulations, it's a healthy baby boy!" "Really?" "Nah. April Fools! It was stillborn, and your wife died too."

Let me rephrase that: a strategy that works for copiers is not necessarily a strategy that works well for cameras.

All this talk about Ricoh "having a plan." Maybe the plan just isn't a very good one. I know I would have to search pretty hard to find a B&M store that carries any Ricoh cameras. And now their bringing that genius to Pentax.

Let's face it, copiers != cameras.

PC Magazine tests K-5

You know, I been thinking about it, and every time someone posts a negative review of the K-5, there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth on these boards.

Remember when someone posted an average review on Amazon, and there was a virtual lynch mob ready to assemble?

Chillax. Not everyone's going to like the K5, the D800, or any other product that gets produced. I've even heard a few negative things said about the K-01, if you can believe that!

No one's reading cNet/PCMag -- (well, I wish that was a complete sentence right there, but ..) -- for their camera reviews anyway. So releax, grab a brewski, then go out and take pictures.

Don't matter what gear he's got or don't got. Bully for him if he shoots with a Hassy, two leicas, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Here's some facts: he complains that the $1200 K-5 (retail srp from Pentaximaging) has worse ISO than the $1600 D300s (SRP from NikonUSA.) Then he compains that the K-5 is too expensive.

It's that kind of muddy, bubble-headed thinking that drove me away from Cnet, PCMag, and Ziff Davis publications in general back in the late 90's.

Remember, PCMag = CNET.

Neither group is known for it's intellectual or editorial prowess. Remember when they complained about Sony's "when timing is everything" ad? And, in the process, exposing their ignorance of photographic history and basic reading comprehension? How hard is it to understand an ad, fercrissake?

Good bye! I notice that you completely bypassed Docrwm's basic question that he directed at you, and claimed (spuriously) that you were merely posting a job opportunity.

But, btw, you didn't "just" post a job opportunity. You also threw in some implications regarding the character of those of us who have been critical of Pentax's marketing efforts. (Well, can you do the job?) And that furthermore those critics were "haters"-- who "need not apply."

It's called talking out of both sides of your mouth. And it's sad that you either don't recognize or are deliberately ignoring the fact that you are doing it.

Oh, and college degree a "large plus"? The whole thing reads like a job posting from 1999.

The fact that they have the WG-2 up there leads me to the conclusion that they are willfully trying to bury/hide the K-01. They don't WANT to promote it. It's as simple as that.
