Cosmicar Five Star 70-200mm Macro MC

Sorry, the title should read 1:4.5, not a:1.4 just a typo ...

Another addition - this is a constant aperture lens - 4.5 through out the range. I had heard a lot about the optics of this type being superior. I did not understand the discussion much, except for the above mentioned conclusion. I wanted to buy 16-45/4 for my K10D instead of the kit lens, but could not as it was out of stock locally at that time. This one (tou/five star) is my first experience of constant aperture, and may be, among other things, this is also responsible for the great image quality ...

I bought this lens yesterday, and got an opportunity to shoot two cheetas from 4 feet - whatever the closest distance of the lens. The lens is amazingly sharp - almost like a prime. And imagine - I bought this for about 20 / 25 USD (converted from the local currency) - absolutely the bestest value for money ;-)
My advice - anybody finds anything like this in working condition - please don't let the opportunity go - just grab it

This is my 9th (or is it 10th) lens to my Pentax collection. Absolutely delighted. This is going to be one of my most favorite lenses, the other one being Pentax 50/1.4.

Does anybody have experience on this combination?
Do the menus / cheat codes discussed here work in this version?

I was just looking for a reply like this - 24x36NOW has hit the nail on the head. The further away you go from a zoom ratio of 1:3, image quality degrades, be it any brand, any range, any number of glass elements. The 28 from 28-300 is not as good as 28 from 28-80, and same goes to the tele end also - a 200 from 28-200 is not as good (read sharp / contrasty / whatever) as 200 from, say 70-210. I guess it is the complexity of optical design which gives this general 1:3 ratio as the upper limit of acceptable quality.

The wider aperture will also play its role in improving the image quality, which is another plus. But that is anyways the case.

Even i have had my doubts about the UV. Some cheap one I got once used to give a ghost image. I just use the ring now, taken out the glass.

How do you focus?

Any experiences with Katz or similar split prism focusing screens?

I also started with manual focus, and was good at it, but with age, have to depend on auto focus. I am exploring the screen change option.

Pentax users from India?

Hi guys,

I am from Mumbai.

Bodies - Digital - Pentax K10D, Film - Pentax ME-F, Cosina C2

two auto lenses - pentax kit lens 18-55/3.5-5.6, tamron 28-200/3.5-5.6

four manual lenses - pentax 50/1.5, pentax 24/2.8, ricoh 28-105/3.5-4.5, tamron 28-200/3.5-5.6

one 2X TC - tamron auto focus

Very happy to have this gear, want to dispose off the manual tamron, and get either a 50-200 or 75-300, preferably pentax

Also looking to include some cheap and light weight vari-zooms - 420-800 types, and 500/8 mirror,

Since these are very slow, and I am getting old ;), also looking for micro-prism / split-prism based bright focussing screen (Catz Eyes) as a replacement for the flat one

Also trying to fabricate a tessar, but that is a long story, sometime later ...

Also, ...

Any suggestions welcome ...

Cheers,
Chetan

Hi everybody,

I stay in Mumbai, India, and have been a Pentax user since 1994.

Have one Pentax ME-F and one Cosina C2 body, and recently (2007 May) got my first DSLR - K10D the great.

My reason to stay with Pentax even in the D generation was my lens collection.

My favorite is the Pentax 50/1.4 manual focus, which came with my ME-F. Amazing results, whenever I can focus it correctly.

Others are Pentax 24/2.8 manual focus,

Tamron 28-200/3.5-5.6 Manual Focus (Looking for a buyer for this - nice lens, but now I have the autofocus version, so I guess this one will do better in some other hands),

Tamron 28-200/3.5-5.6 Augo Focus (my latest acquisition, generally good lens on a jungle outing, though a 400 mm / 2.8 giant will give great shots and great exercise for my shoulder and back),

Ricoh 28-105/3.5-4.5 Manual Focus (another one of my beautiful lenses, with great results), and of course,

The Pentax DA 18-55 Kit Lens that came with the K10D body (nothing great, pretty slow, gives good results only with High ISO in low light).

I also got myself a brand new Tamron 2X TC for less than USD50 a couple of months back. Works well, but autofocus fails at extreme end of the range (on my 28-200 and 18-55). I auto focus the lenses at the wide end, and then zoom out. I don't think it is right - with my manual focus, I used to do it the other way round, but this is the only way the TC works. On my 50/1.4, TC works pretty well, especially for portraits on K10D. The light is 2 stops less, which I don't mind thanks to 1.4, and the background blurring is even stronger, which is a good thing. I lose quite a bit on image sharpness, though.

I am trying (for god knows how many years now) to construct a simple 3 element Tessar lens, but the mechanical bit is just not happening. All the best to me ...

I have built a makeshift telescope tube (400 MM / f5) but I need to work on the collimation and internal reflections. Tough finding time and motivation - simultaneously ;)

Any suggestions are welcome.

Regards,
Chetan.
