We have threads/clubs for lenses like M, K, Zeiss so I was thinking why not have a special thread for old Soviet and new Russian lenses?
In this posting I would like to start with a close to 50 years old lens based on Carl Zeiss Flektogon optical diagram. Mir-1 is a 37mm f/2.8 lens and was designed to better the Zeiss Flektogon which according Wikipedia the first element in this lens was a disperser meniscus to reduce vignette effects when photographing with an open diaphragm. Obviously the lens was a big success as it won the Grand Prix award at the 1958 Expo in Brussels, which should have been very odd for a communist country to receive considering the Cold War.
I acquired this lens from eBay for $20USD which is about 10 times cheaper than what you would pay for a second hand Zeiss Flektogon 35mm f/2.8.
As you can see the lens has seen a lot of use, but the glass is in mint condition.
So here are some of the photos taken with Mir-1 which shows the character of this lens.
Most of these photos are taken handheld. For some of them I used whatever I can find to stabilize the camera. Mir-1 goes to Sydney:
Landing was rough.
Sydney Centre Point Tower
Monorail at Darling Harbor. Mir-1 is so prone to flare that it causes headache to some people. :)
Maritime Museum
And the cherry of the cake the stitched pano. I used one of the poles (like the white poles on the right) to stabilize the camera
My observations are:
1. It is a lens with a very interesting character.
2. It has problems with flare, which a small hood would easily fix.
3. The lens is sharp enough even wide open and much better than a modern Mir-1B.
My conclusion is that it is definitely a keeper.
Thanks.

I was not using the 31mm Limited very much, so I decided to go out and use it for one last time before I sell it. Then, I think I changed my mind.
Should I keep it? What do you think? ;)

Few more from Mir-24N
My conclusion is that is not a bokeh king, but which 35mm is..
I like it for the sum if its qualities. It does everything well, which makes it a very useful lens for various purposes.

Recently I bought Mir-24H which is a 35mm f/2 Nikon mount lens, and is also available in M42 but under the name Mir-24M.
After slight lens modification I did some table top shots just to see how it behaves at f/2. Mir-24N @ f/2 Mir-24N @ f/2 Mir-24N @ f/2 - 100% crop of the image above
The lens can focus really close at 24mm making it not a bad alternative for DA 35mm Macro Limited if you are not after 1:1 reproduction ratio.
I will probably do some comparison tests between Mir-24N, Topcor 35mm f/2.8, and Mir-1 (which is a 37mm f/2.8)

Since I got my Volna-9 I was always curious how it compares to Industar 61 so I decided to buy one.
Two days ago (last day of my annual leave) I went out to test my newly acquired Industar 61L/3.
At home I did a simple bokeh comparison with Volna-9 (both lenses wide open at f/2.8):
Taken with Industar 61L at the closest possible focus.
Taken with Volna-9 at the same distance from the object as the Industar.
My conclusion is that Industar 61L is far from the bokeh of the Volna-9.

I managed to take some sample photos with my newly acquired Helios-40 during my lunch brake today.
All the images here are shot at f/1.5 and are straight from the camera.
100% center crop
100% center crop
I think I have a keeper lens.

Here are few shots from today using the Volna-9.
Number 1 and 2 are shot wide open, 3,4 and 5 should be at f/4, number 6 should be f/5.6 and number 7 is at f/8.

Regrettably M-mount lenses are not a viable option for Pentax K mount as the mount register of the M mount is very short. But the Leica R lenses can be adapted to Pentax with a Leitax lens adapter/mount. For more information please refer to Leica & Pentax & Nikon | Leitax |

Since you started in Russian...
Здравствуйте, ребята,
Это мой объектив Гелиос-40 (первая версия), и мне очень нравится. :)
I've never seen a Helios-40 lens with a red "П" (P) letter on it. It reminds me of the red "T" letter on some of the Zeiss lenses signifying the better coating than the regular Zeiss lenses.
Above you can also see the three color filters that comes with the lens in a leather case.
Since the filter thread of the Helios-40 is 66mm there is now way I can find a hood for this lens. So I came up with the idea to remove the glass from the three color filters and stack the metal rings together forming a not too bad looking hood. Now look at the thickness of this glass.
Since the focusing was very stiff I decided to clean it and lube it with a white lithium grease. When I soaked the helicoid in petrol and brushed it, there was a large amount of dirt at the bottom, for me it was really astonishing how could this lens turn at all with this amount of dirt. After I cleaned the lens, the focusing became as smooth as a Takumar:) This lens is built like a tank and it weights like a tank. In fact it reminds me of a AK-47, it is very robust mechanically.

I know I will regret if I sell my:
Pentax 31mm, 43mm, 77mm Limiteds
Pentax K 50mm f/1.2
Leica R 50mm f/2 Summicron
I regret selling my converted to Pentax Topcor 58mm f/1.4 and Zeiss 50mm f/1.4
I know I'm a sucker for 50-ish mm lenses.

I'm considering buying an ultra wide prime and I'm considering these two lenses. I'm well aware of the mild fisheye distortion of the Zenitar, but my main priority is the corner sharpness. Anyone out there who tried both lenses? I intend to shoot between f/4 and f/8 so I need a better corner resolution within this range.

Since I bought the Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 (made by Cosina) which is based on Re.Auto-Topcor 58mm f/1.4 made by Topcon, I always wondered how the original compared to its new copy.
My curiosity and lust for lenses made my pull the ebay trigger on a used Re.Auto-Topcor 58mm f/1.4. The lens came with oily and stuck aperture blades, some dust and unfortunately cracked rubber focusing grip.
It took me more than 10 hours to disassemble the lens to it's bits and pieces, clean, lubricate and reassemble it. What a relieve completing this, tonight I will have a good sleep:)
Tomorrow (Sunday) I will do some comparisons between the Voigtlander and the Topcor.

This or similar question have been asked multiple times, but I will give my answer.
the 77mm due to the longer focal lenght and faster aperture allows for shallower depth of field and thus better background isolation. Bokeh is subjective, but I like the 77mm bokeh.
The 77mm Limited gives you that "something" which you can rarely see in other lenses. Some call it magical, other call it 3D.
I had both lenses and sold the DA 70mm. PF/CA is not a big issue, especially with K7 automatic CA removal. I would say go straight for the 77mm as I highly recommend it. You will "cry" only once when you buy it, but will smile every time you take a photo with it.
I think that every Pentaxian should have one.
