I think this is a good move for attracting new, young users. It softens the look, in non night time photos, and achieves something of the romantic feel of snapshot film cameras. Having it integrated means it's still a point and shoot proper. Adapter + filter makes it to big and clunky. Many GR users will like this type of features. Some of my GR shots would probably benefit. Family snapshots, moments with special light etc. Saying that I'm not sure how it affects resolution and detail.
For those with instagram this set by _sarah_simon, particularly the 4th one, shows how it affects the results for bw photography https://www.instagram.com/p/C5CdqDTRlnG/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== |

Vertical photos are better for viewing on a phone. Flipping between portrait and landscape whilst browsing isn't going to happen unless the viewer is extremely interested in your photo. So horizontal photos (video) end up tiny and without impact. A vertical photo may nearly fill the screen and fit into the flow of using the device.
Sure there are issues with taking the photo but imho what's driving vertical is viewing.

Pentax says DA35 and HDFA35 use hybrid asph. Not specified on the discontinued page forSMCFA35. Most likely patent for the SMCFA35 specify glass molded asph. I don't think ground asph was ever the case.
The DA35 is a great lens for apsc. I would go for that one unless money is no issue. It's worth noting that the DA35 has baffles and will vignette more than the FA35 on FF but it will flare less on apsc. I've done tests.
I think the DA/FA 35 may well be one of Pentax best design. It's tiny and a simple optical design but it just does so well.

Another thread was discussing the types of asph in the various lenses (hybrid except the FA31 being glass molded) so I did a quick test to compare the out of focus highlight discs using my K-1. Now this isn't what the word bokeh is to me but they might be of interest to some. Note that any dirt on my lenses or sensor may affect the appearance. All I did was a quick blow with the dust blower and a quick inspection. You should be able to right click on image and open full size if displayed zoomed out.
edit: Exif gave smc instead of HD for the HDFA35. Corrected the image above, also da fstop

The camera was on a tripod and it didn't really move. The images above are all cropped to the same rectangle. Any difference in brightness is probably due to minor movement or the accuracy of the aperture. All exposures were set manually counting from the aperture values. I personally wouldn't make much of the relative brightness.

Vignetting comparisons. These were actually made as part of the process of creating lens profiles so the apertures don't match. It's wide open and three stops down not comparable apertures. Note that these are homemade! The stray samples between 0.2 and 0.4 are I think due to an imperfection in my diffuser (white lamp globe).

Try the "play" button at right at the edge of the back of the camera, below the exposure compensation toggle. It's to the right of your thumb when holding the camera as if photographing.

Pentax shows considerable understanding of the market for film cameras by showing half frame oof images. You're not shooting 35mm film to maximize fidelity.

Just testing the lens at Skogskyrkogården (the Woodland Cemetary) south of Stockholm. I usually don't post images here but I won't be using these for anything so decided to share. All taken handheld and fairly casually framed but shows how the lens handles this kind of thing. May supply hi-res and/or raw later but google drive was such a hassle so will see. The files have been developed in Rawtherapee using their "auto matched" colour profile and corrected using a lensfun profile I've created that so far corrects for distortion and tca. The lateral CA of this lens is quite strong but also cleans up quite well in post. Two of the images are testing how I might use the out of focus behaviour of this lens for my type of work.
The buildings seen here was designed by Gunnar Asplund. The landscaping was primarily by Sigurd Lewerentz who also designed a chapel on the site. |

Well they did as well unfortunately... ---------- Post added 12-14-23 at 01:59 PM ----------
Nope. For the young an old man spec monster camera is completely unacceptable (unless quirky and second hand). They want analog or "vintage camera like" such as Fuji X100. Missed shots isn't the main issue but the photographic experience, cool snapshots of their life and friends and the look of the camera.
Nikon with their apsc retro camera imho missed the mark and would only attract uncool kids looking to be cool. The most embarrassing segment. Vintage analogue point and shoots, rangefinders and slrs are the real thing to have.
Pentax potentially has the culture and sensibility to produce a camera that is quirky and consistent enough to actually be a new product interesting enough to be interesting to the actually cool kids. It just can't be anything like their dads milcs or dslrs.

That's not true. A lot of the weight seems to come from chassi etc. Just compare K-3 with K-70. Cameras with rather similar features.

Yes the GPS does drain battery more than it should. I still leave it always on because the map function of my website is a useful way for people to find images of interest to them.

It goes without saying that people using large zooms get little benefit from making the body 10-15mm less deep.
Large zooms are for old people though. :) Joking but not joking. The point of a slimmer camera is to appeal to those mostly using smaller lenses. Whether this is the "flagship" (another old term) or a another model is a different question.
There are several small lenses available for purchase new and lots of vintage glass. These lenses have no suitable camera. Despite said small lenses (limiteds) being Pentax main selling point.

Anyone doubting the film resurgence should be convinced of their error by now. Mainstream brands using film photography in products and marketing is a pretty obvious sign it's a big thing.

I agree with a slight adjustment. Cameras are common amongst males in the "hipster" demograpic. It's been like this for a long time. Women are rather quiet online, in gear circles, but even years ago during the dslr period it was a common to see groups of women/girls where one seemed to the group photographer. This was particularly noticeable at music festivals, events, beaches etc.

Thinking about it some more a super extreme lcd less, ibis less, feature less camera might be something for Pentax. An slr Pixii. Tossing basically all features overboard might enable a camera small enough to be compared to a film slr. A huge problem is AF though. I don't think the AF motor can be fitted reasonably. It's been a protruding bump for ages now.
This would be a low volume possibly crowd funded.

A KP like camera would be doable. The KP wasn't fully retro but just a slightly retro looking modern dslr. Following that route would be a good idea imho. Hopefully a bit refined though. Just having the smaller profile of the K-3III prism hump would be a large improvement in looks. The depth and size of the prism hump is a problem for the KP looks.
The Petafolks mentioned specific models like the MX and differentiated between different but similar vintage models suggesting a proper clone not a vaguely retro look.

I think you are mistaken and that petapixel is just speculating. They articulated their reasoning and it's basically
1. Pentax has heritage
2. Pentax has glass
3. Nikon did it
4. We'd love to see it.
The general direction Pentax is moving with flare glass and film cameras also make it plausible. The main argument against it imho is that a reskin would be a terrible idea. The camera would be a complete ugly dysfunctional monster. It's not straightforward to make a retro dslr. Size and function make it difficult and I don't think Pentax will release a stupid camera. They seem to have some pride.
Now I've been arguing in thread after thread that Pentax should make a pared down smallish FF camera for basically the same reasons petapixel is asking for a retro camera. The camera I've been asking for could flirt more with vintage looks but I just don't think a MX or LX lookalike is feasible. The size form and handling just wouldt be very similar. A bit disappointing that four industry talking heads can see that.

It probably just looked right for what they wanted to communicate.
The ad on the whole though the ad is a hint at just how important culturally film photography is at the moment. It's being used to sell cars by imparting good vibes for young and old alike.

Only the HD DA 1650PLM may be better (I've seen no comparisons). The HD DA limiteds are all worse even those with "simpler" focal lenghts. Exception may be the DA35ltd macro but I've not used it. All the GR lenses are exceptionally good.

This is a real surprise imho. Making the effort to port the K-3 III code to the older system used in the K-1 is quite the thing.

I think Pentax is hoping to become the leica of DSLRs. Not in terms of price but in terms of niche tech. They have the heritage and have put out gear with a very solid and camera like feel. Could work.
