I will echo the comments from above...hand held shots are very tricky unless you are prepared to bump up the ISO to get a nice fast shutter speed. Also the contrast compared to other lens types will be poor. I always shoot RAW and then you have plenty of leeway to play around with image at processing stage.
Don't discount a mirror though as they can be great fun to use and can give some acceptable results - here are some from my MTO 3M5A 500mm lens...all hand held... sleepy cat by jon bawden, on Flickr donut bokeh pegs by jon bawden, on Flickr blue moon by jon bawden, on Flickr donut bokeh from mirror lens by jon bawden, on Flickr

The famous 'seawall' at Teignmouth, Devon, where the railway has to battle the elements....
Also gave me an excuse to try my new Tamron 70-200mm F2.8, and it's turning out to be a cracking lens. Teignmouth seawall by jon bawden, on Flickr

on the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme it seems appropriate to post this image.
Even in our small village, 3 of the names on the memorial were killed in the Battle including one who was killed on the first day of the slaughter... :(

Caught this image of my daughter getting to grips with using a manual focus 50mm with her K5 - she is hoping to study both film and digital photography at 6th form, and seems to have a good eye for composition and photography in general...:) Olivia B&W by jon bawden, on Flickr

whilst on holiday I tried out an old M42 mount Pentacon 50mm f1.8 lens that came as part of a bundle that I was given - I have never used any M42 lenses on my K3 so stuck an adaptor on and started shooting..this lens is a bit 'fluffy' at f1.8 but at f2.8 it seems to give a nice effect....
