One angle about the K5II I never hear...

And thus, the elephant lands and it appears the blind men were not so blind...

From the review:

QuoteQuote:

So, what's the bottom line? Pentax promised us an AF system that works when it's dark, and they delivered one. In low light under EV 0, the K-5 II outperforms its predecessor as well as its Canon and Nikon rivals, the 7D and D7000. However, overall, the autofocus in the K-5 II is not the big upgrade that Pentax K-5 users have been waiting for. We think that the next step for Pentax is to add more focus points and implement a more powerful motor (perhaps one that is brushless) in order to make their cameras more versatile in everyday shooting conditions, and for shooting fast moving subjects. The Canon and Nikon bodies excel in these areas compared to the Pentax K-5 II.

Pentax K30 heavy NR applied to RAW files...

But the K5 II is double the price and in a different class... the point is we shouldn't have to suffer bad NR techniques on a new camera that uses the same sensor as a 2 year old camera. It seem like wilful deception, mild sabotage even, from the Pentax engineers. Why would they do that when they know it affects IQ on RAW files of all things?

As someone on the cusp of getting a K-30... should I be worried about this? is it really THAT noticeable even after you've tweaked camera settings?

Fair and well reasoned post, and you brought some angles I hadn't looked at with regards to the R&D and sales. However, I still think that Pentax had wanted to release something at the same time as the rest (unless you are suggesting that the K-5 II represents the sum total of their premium R&D over the last year or so, in which case i'd have to say that's very unlikely), and that they are still trying to remain competitive. We'll see what 2013 brings, and I hope it's something juicy!

As for the forum bandwidth comment... that's exactly what I was talking about earlier, some people are completely closed to criticism of Pentax even when justified in the eyes of many. People are not saying 'how bad the products are', they are saying that they are dissappointed in the latest release. Those are two very different things, and they have as much right to express their opinion using the forum bandwidth, as the die-hard supporters do when they post how great everything is.

There's room for everyone. :)

Well, to me it's clear what Pentax/Ricoh have done with the Pentax K5 MkII.
  1. They are behind schedule on their premium project(s) and knew they had to release something in time for Photokina or look bad compared to the competition

  2. They wanted something that could be tweaked easily and then produced with minimum cost and fuss, hence using the same body/parts as the K-5

While I think all the positive, funtastic and huggy posts like "The K5 is so perfect that all they could do was tweak it a little" are admirable in spirit, lets not kid ourselves, it is not a serious upgrade, and if you look at the situation objectively with no bias (no offence but that excludes about 75% of ths thread judging frm what I read), then it is a stop-gap solution.

The admin of this site posted recently about a full-frame camera on the way, I think this is what is behind, and that they have had some form of issues whether it be conceptual or technological, and the project will run late into next year where it would probably ideally have been this year when everyone else released their new big things (Nikon D600 etc).

Being a Pentax supporter doesn't mean having to constantly write self-placating posts in defence of Pentax, and to kid yourself that everything is hunky and dory with a lacklustre new release when it clearly isn't (the exact same kind of denial happens over at the BlackBerry forums). Sometimes you just need to be critical, analytic, and accept that things are not ideal. This new release, which uses the same technology and body as of a camera 2 years old, when its little brother the K30 was released only a short time before and is in areas technologically superior, clearly isn't ideal at this time of year when competitors are visibly doing so much more.

He obviously meant that he wasn't impressed with the leaked specs that he has seen, which while unofficial, are on this very site in the form of an article. There's nothing wrong with his voicing a critical opinion on that, I felt similar upon reading it, and to be honest you are reacting a bit like an overzealous and overprotective fan.

I agree with this, very dissappointing.

Well, I think personally that Pentaxians are among the most patient of all camera supporters. What people are possibly disappointed with is that Pentax do not seem to be keeping effective pace with the other major manufacturers, and while that is forgiveable to a certain extent due to the internal issues we know Pentax have, there does come a point where you see a new release which is essentially a tweak of a 2 year old camera, compare it to the cameras others are releasing that for the most part represent a clear step up from the previous model, and start to become a little miffed.

I think all but the most fervently die-hard Pentaxians would agree that the K5 II is realistically in no way worth an upgrade if you already have a K5.

For my part, I will be looking at what happens in the wake of Photokina before deciding whether to take a K30 and keep my existing kit, or amicably part ways.

I think any K20 owner that purchased within the last 6 months should hold off buying this K7, and ugrade when the next gen hits. The K7 looks like a supreme rework of the K20D, and while it has better AF speed, 720p video recording and better high-speed shooting as notable improvements, it still has a 14.6MP sensor and I don't think that unless you rely on your Pentax for your livelihood that it's going to be worth the jump. The successor to the K7 will very likely have 1080P shooting and a 20MP+ sensor in addition to all the improvements the K7 brings, and I think that's the time it will be worth current K20 owners doing the move.

However for K10 owners I would jump at the chance... the K7 looks like the start of something BIG for Pentax, and addresses many previous criticisms.

A very exciting time for us Pentaxians. :D

Having come from a K10D to a K20D in the last few days I can tell you that the difference in IQ is definately noticeable... the detail captured by the samsung sensor is staggering, and if you are into macros or cropping then it will make a huge difference to your results (imo). :)

Ok here's a few completely unedited shots besides the obvious re-sizing to fit the forum...

Taken with the Mk I kit lens...

Taken with the DA 55-300mm

It's hard to appreciate the the last harbour shot without seeing the original, but the detail is really exquisite, and really shows what the sensor on the K20D is capable of. With some cropping and touching up in PS, i'm going to have some great photos from this christmas. :D

Ok guys well I took my K20D back to Park Cameras and told them I thought I had an AF issue and the guy swapped the body straight away without any hesitation or grumbling... amazing service.

The new K20D is to my noticeably better... AF locks on fast and is tack sharp almost every shot where I don't fluff something up.

I'll post some shots in a bit, it produced fantastic results this christmas even with the bog-standard kit lens, and the detail this sensor records is astounding. :)

Ok I just did a LOT of testing outside in my garden and I definately think there is a problem with the AF on this camera... i'm not saying it's catastrophic, but it's definately there... it just doesn't "feel" or look 100% right. I took some snaps of some basic and easily focussable objects and around 4/10 images were coming back very soft and a bi tout of focus, even on portrait shots, which was where the K10D excelled. I switched to manual focussing qith the K20D and did it myself and they came out tack sharp, just as they should be.

My old K10D was almost as sharp as manual in 99% of situations when using AF and the exact same lens, so this leads me to believe that something is a little wrong with the body I have. I'm dropping into Park Cameras today to get it looked at, preferably swapped seeing as im back off to Switzerland in a week or so.

Hi Igilligan, luckily I haven't noticed any hot pixels yet but your focussing issue does sound a bit suspect, especially since we KNOW what trhese cameras are capable of! It should not be performing the skightest bit worse as an inferior camera such as the K100, this is obvious. How long ago did you purchase it? If I were you i'd go back to where you bought it and talk this through, and test some more bodies with the same lenses if you're physically able to. If not, send it back for arepair, or a full refund if need be and simply buy another. You know when a cameras not right, and with the money you pay there's no reason to stand for it. :)

Well to cut a long story short my new K20D which I recieved today just doesn't seem as sharp as the old K10D it replaced. I took some test shots using a few lenses using flash and the images just seemed very soft and slightly blurry... I took pics of the same things using my dads K10D and the same lenses and they came out pin sharp with greater focus range at 20mm. I also checked the menu settings and can't see any difference barring the K20D being set to max resolution and **** quality JPEG's. SR is also on.

I heard the K20D can do global AF adjustment and I found the setting in the C section of the menus... but any tips to using this, and what I should be looking for?

I'm sure i'm not imagining things with this (my dad says he can't notice any difference, but then again as much as I love him sometimes I feel he wouldn't notice if my nose fell off in front of him) and if anyone has any similar experience with their K20D then i'd love to hear about it, as at the moment i'm feeling a bit dissappointed with the performance i'm seeing...

Thanks in advance,

Rich.

Ok thinking about it seriously... I really don't think it's worth shelling out an extra £100 for the K20D when i'm a) not a very experienced photographer and b) will be looking to buy something better by the time I am.

The K10D is a great camera, and the perfect tool for "cutting my teeth" on. I don't need a K20D to take some amazing photos, and i'm going to wring every last pennys-worth out of this K10D before I upgrade it to something else.

Oh and I forgot to mention that while at the cameraq shop today I bought the 55-300mm (£199 - £25 cashback) and took a batch of test shots of my neighbours cat, as well as some random crap outside my house and I am VERY happy with the initial results!

Next on my list is a good 17-70mm lens and eventually... the 50-135mm... I had a play with one today and it was amazing, I couldn't believe how quiet the HSM focussing was... but that price... *gulp*.

Good times are ahead in Zurich when I get back there this January. :D

edumad... save up for the Pentax 17-70mm maybe? :)

Ok well interestingly Pentax are currently doing £100 cashback on K20D = Kit lens... and the place where I bought my K10D form have said that it would be ok for me to return my K10D for a full refund and exchange it for the K20D... which minus the £100 rebate would bring the pretty close to the K10D... within £100. Shall i go for it thinking in terms of future-proofing? :D

Ok after reading numerous reviews of the SMC Pentax DA 55-300mm i'm now quite smitten with it... the test shots look excellent too accross the range. I'm considering one of those and maybe also a 17-70mm (reccommend any in particular?) to cover all situations... then I can ditch the kit lens. Does that sound a decent idea? :)

Thanks guys I did some googling around for that Pentax and it seems it is VERY scarce at the moment, even on Ebay! Are there any more widely available lenses that perform similarly for not too much more money which have the added benefit of AF? :)

Hi guys, well after sharing my dads K10D for the last year or so and never being able to use it because of being out of the country and pressures of work, I have now gone out and bought myself a new K10D with standard kit lens. Now, I already have a Tamron 90mm DI that I bought a while back as I like macro photography, and I found it made a great portrait lens due to the excellent bokku... but i'm now looking for something that will allow me to take some longer distance shots (so, say up to a 250mm lens) without breaking my bank balance, and without sacrificing too muc quality.

I now live in Zurich so I will be mainly taking pictures of the lake landscape, portraits of performers in the street, buildings, as well as general out and about snapping. so i'm looking for a couple that complement each-other well, and can cope with the situations above.

As said i'm not wanting to break the bank just yet until I improve my "skillz yo" and get to the level where such purchases can be justitfied, so any advice on would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, and a merry christmas to all. :D

5 lenses everyone should have for their K10D?

Hi guys, I currently have the following lenses:

*The standard K10D kit 18-55mm lens.
*Tamron 90mm 1:1 macro.
*An old Pentax 28mm-80mm.
*An old 70mm-210mm.

I consider the kit lens and the Tamron as leagues ahead in quality compared to the older lenses form my dads SLR days and am looking to get a couple more, the highest quality ones I can get for the money.

Just wondering what you guys consider the essential high-quality lenses that everyone needs to own for their K10D! :)
