Hi everyone!
I had been saving up my Canadian loonies for quite awhile now with the goal of buying a Pentax LX.
I've been shooting a lot of film lately with my Pentax MX.
However, I absolutely adore the LX modular system and that legacy premium quality Pentax offering.
Also, acquiring the famous LX would give me cool content to make another overview video on my 'PentaxTips' YouTube channel.
Buying and selling used gear locally is primarily how I saved money for this goal of mine - so it takes a long time to save.
When I recently got into striking range of buying an LX, I put an ad on the Wanted Pentax Items forum asking for a body, finder, and strap lugs.
Bonus if it had a grip and bonus if it had a popup waist-level viewfinder.
Actually, and impressive number of members answered my call, but @Wheatfield; gave me an incredible offer that I absolutely could not refuse; an original-owner Pentax LX with complete system, which includes:
Pentax LX (late model)
FA-1W Eye-level Finder
FF-1 Waist-Level Finder
FE-1 Magnifying Finder
FB-1 Base Finder with the FD-1, FD-2, and FC-1 attachments
LX Winder
Accessory Grip B
Lugs and original strap
and 6 focus screens (SA-21, S1, SG-20, and 3x SG-60W)
The camera is in fantastic shape considering it was purchased 1988 and had been put to professional use!
The meter works, shutter shows no stickiness at all speeds, and the current light seals are also in good shape.
The accessories show no wear and are exceptionally bright and clear.
Being an original owner, @Wheatfield knew the entire service history, including being serviced by Pentax Canada in 2002 just before they stopped servicing cameras. Not only did they complete full CLA, but also installed a new-style gold wrapped aperture cam follower and ISO resistors, as well as all new foam, seals, and rubber parts. A new main circuit board custom made by Pentax was also installed. Others have serviced the cameras up into 2006. Apparently, to a great extent it was a camera bag princess!
Also, being a Canadian deal, we were able to forgo international shipping and customs or PayPal fees - extremely ideal.
@Wheatfield informed me that this beautiful system had mainly been in storage, with only occasional use to exercise the mechanisms. It was no longer being put to good use and wanted to see it go to a good person who would appreciated and used the system, since he has other 645 and 6x7 systems as well. He stunned me with a exceedingly generous offer for his LX.
The kit arrived yesterday...
I am absolutely floored.
I slammed a roll of HP5 in and I am loving exploring my new possibilities!
I feel like the luckiest person in Pentax-land and I am smiling ear-to-ear!
Christmas in July!
Thank you @Wheatfield you've truly treated me and you have my utmost gratitude.

Agreed. The photographer makes the images work. A poor craftsman blames his tools - but an expert craftsman may excel even more with improved tools that offer access to things barred before. I’m not suggesting these is zero benefit to sharpness - I’m saying it’s far from the most important element.
There’s a website that posts the sharpest lenses for the a7riv (maybe v now) and many people swear by that list over everything else. I prefer more wholistic views of the gear.
My real point to the op is that only the op can decide what they want. But they need to be realistic about it and verify that the change offers a concrete benefit- even if only psychological.

Just for the sake of accuracy, the DFA*50 has a large ring motor, which is designated as SDM, not DC.

I see no problem shooting wildlife from a low position with a camera without flip screen. Keeping a camera at arms length while squinting at a screen is more awkward than bending low or lie on the ground. All the images below are shot low, or from the ground, with a camera with no screen at all - film. |

I'm anything but an ornithological guru, but I believe this character is a juvenile little blue heron, as suggested by long-time forum member Susan (slopez) - who is an ornithological guru - over on Flickr. The bird is like nothing I've seen, so I'm happy to have been able to capture it. :)

I use LensCoat LensHides. Got one AP Snow for winter, and one Max4 for other seasons... LensCoat® LensHide™ Realtree AP Snow
on the above, I put it inside-out for some reasons...
This is the Max4 in the bushes, and a fellow photographer for comparisons
These are very compact. they are the size of a small pillow once packed, and they were not the lightweight ones they now have for sale (I would choose the lightweight ones if I had to buy them today, because the Max4 I have is made of heavier canvas, and it could be pretty hot during summer days, especially if installed under direct sun, i.e. not under the shadows. Also I think the lightweight ones would pack smaller IMO.)

Hello,
As some of you know, I'm into building scale models. I'm passionate about these 2 hobbies: Scale Models and Photography. I get to combine both to create realistic images. It's been a few years since I've submitted an article for a magazine. But I recently did. To my surprise, my picture of my blue C8 Corvette model made it to the cover's top corner of issue #213 of Model Cars Magazine.
along with a beautiful presentation of the short article that I wrote.
Always a thrill to be published!
I did a thread about this topic a while back. How I photograph Scale Models and other objects - PentaxForums.com
...and, if you have no idea what I'm talking about...

I'm quite sure I've made similar suggestions... such as "defecate or get off the pot" :p
From what I can ascertain, with the benefit of hindsight biz regrets his previous purchasing decisions because he now needs something more and the upgrade / update path isn't (yet) available - but instead of either (a) accepting whatever limitations his gear has, adapting his expectations and/or use-cases and getting on with it, or (b) making a decision to switch to another system (and getting on with that), he's stuck in a purgatory formed of regret and analysis paralysis... :o

"I'm not against buying new gear - not at all. If the product exists, someone knows why they're buying it (which could just be "because I want one" - that's perfectly valid), has a good idea of what to expect, already has - or intends to acquire - the skills and ability to utilise it and realise the predicted gains, and can afford the investment in money and personal time required, fantastic "
Looking at my gear, k-5 10 years ago, k-3 8 years ago, K-1 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure I'm back in pre-digital mode. I'll buy a new camera when the ones I have break, and I won't be interested in much else until they do. With the Addition of DenoiseAI and SharpenAI, most of the issue with my current gear are taken care of.
So cool with digital, instead of a camera that handles noise better, $99 keeps my gear up to date.

I can't remember the last time I saw an actual review there. To be fair I haven't looked deeply but all I've seen is opinion pieces with strong biases.

I'm glad you mentioned the K-3 Mark III videos. Those and the associated narrative pieces were not only interesting to me, but also highlighted the talents of a relatively young team.
This past summer, a vacant house across the street was undergoing a total renovation. I was lucky that the renovators allowed me to pop in every so often to take a look at their work. The guys (no females on this particular job) were mid-twenties to mid-thirties. I was really impressed by their craftsmanship, attention to detail, and finesse. They certainly not only knew the difference between a hammer and a screwdriver, but also the use of different types of hammers. And one of the guys had custom-built the interior of his workshop van -- wow! I'll be looking for this outfit if I need something done on my own house.
