K-3 speculation

The FOV looks about the same (Nikon with 50mm lens and Pentax with 35mm lens). There is a difference in the magnification, the viewfinder is more "in your face" or closer to the eyepiece, where the K-7 viewfinder looks pushed further away from the eyepiece. If i try it with the FA 50/1.4 on the Pentax, the FOV is obviously smaller and the magnification is a lot bigger. Almost the same thing happens if I try the Pentax lenses on a Pentax film body.

I have the cameras here side by side (Nikon D800 and Pentax K-7) and the difference, when you look through each, is day vs night. Pentax has the 35ltd attached and the Nikon has the 50/1.4 attached.

Nobody said they weren't. :p And why can't Pentax be ... if they're selling the 645D at 10k €, why couldn't they sell a FF for around 2k €. Oh right, the cost of manufacturing vs profit argument again. Totally forgot about that one.

We've been hearing this argument year after year.
I recently switched brands (Nikon) and for me it's quite a big change for the better. Pentax is still great, but the step to 645 was a bit too much for me and I opted for FF. After about two weeks shooting with the new camera I picked up my K-7 and couldn't believe how I was even able to compose shots through that little dark viewfinder ... well yes, it works but it's so much easier with a bigger and brighter viewfinder (to all the mirror-based viewfinder users: what sorcery u using to be able to see through that?!).
AF ... it was OK-ish on the K-7 for most occasions (K-5 is a bit better) but Canon and Nikon on the new models are a couple of years ahead (at least on the FF bodies). At work (not professional photography work, just shots in the workshop/on field) I'm forced to use a Canon 550D with a kit lens and it's still beter in AF than the K-7/K-5 - these two get there, but the Canon is just faster. I do like how the 11 points are laid out on the Pentax tho (love it actually and hate the Canon 550D layout).

I get that for most people these things don't matter and I'm perfectly fine with that, just expressing my opinion.

Ash has a point that the camera is just a tool, but who said you should use tools that you don't like. :)

Have you actually used one and compared results with let's say the K5? Forget what you've read on the internet.

For me, the difference in the AF system and the viewfinder alone justifies buying a FF body (be it Canon or Nikon ... ok Sony, you can tag along here).

OK, just realized that you probably meant $ 2k with that K-5 price in Sweden, because 2k € would simply be ridiculous. Here in Slovenia the regular price for a K-5 body is just below 1k € and the K-5 + 18-55 WR kit is around 1k €.

I don't think we understand each other very well. You're talking about using K-mount lenses on NORMAL FF bodies and m4/3 systems ... that is all well and works fine, what I was replying to was using the same lenses on a mirrorless FF. The post I replied to was suggesting that Pentax should make a mirrorless FF camera and use the existing lenses and that would just not work without an extension tube because the lenses simply would not cover the whole sensor.

I hope you understand now that I'm not saying K-mount lenses don't work on FF but they wouldn't work on a mirrorless FF (at least not without using an extension that would not go well with the "make the camera smaller" moto).

Great, now we're comparing the K-5 to the expensive 1D series and calling it magical. Well for a $4k+ camera I expect AF to be perfect but on the Canon it clearly isn't (Nikon D3 is still better).

Agreed, but my point was why pay $2k+ for a lens when you get comparable results with nice Pentax glass for far less money. That is if you're not too much of a speed sports junkie.

No thank's, have my DA 12-24 for now and love it. When the time comes for a Pentax FF I'm sure they'll produce a nice wide lens to go with it. :)

Your statement earlier came out as Pentax bashing but now you're praising them for making quirky cameras - a bit two-sided, don't you think? And I wouldn't call the *ist, K10D, K20D, K-7 or K5 quirky, yes they make colored entry level cameras but that's because almost no one else is and they sell.

Funny, from reading your posts one would think that you're against everything Pentax ever made and Canon is soooo much better at everything.

If you're willing to have a smaller image because a lens can't cover the whole sensor of a mirrorless APS-C or FF if pushed back, then there is no problem. The m4/3 is different as I said before because the image sensor is even smaller than an APS-C. Yes, you can use an adapter to move the lens away from the sensor, but what's the point if you're aiming for a compact camera.

The m4/3 is a smaller sensor so there is no problem. We‘re talking about using lenses designed for aps-c to be used on an aps-c with a smaller register distance, there's a problem.

I wouldn't go so far as calling Canon focusing magical, just a few weeks ago a friend of mine was having trouble focusing with his 5D MKII and 24-105mm f/4 IS USM L glass. You're mixing AF sensors with lens motors - Pentax has fairly good AF but slow lens motors (or none if you count all the non * lenses). If I could choose I'd have Nikon AF and Canon lenses for a nice Pentax price, there I've said it. :)
With Pentax you get what you pay for and the same goes for Canon/Nikon/Sony. But the funny thing is you can shoot and get good results with all systems - it all depends on what you're shooting. Are you willing to give much more money for so little effect - that is up to you. Pentax is good enough for a lot of people.

Would you mind elaborating on this? Do you need anything more than 31, 43, 50, 77, 100, ... maybe a wider lens would be nice.

All this from a person who puts a Hello Kitty sticker on her camera.

You do realize that a mirrorless camera has a different distance from the sensor to the back of the lens so you'd have to make an extension tube for all existing lenses to focus properly.

I think Pentax knows what it's doing.

For EVIL yes, for DSLR please keep it simple, the camera has enough bulk already. I'd also get rid of some of the gimmick software features in a semi pro body.

- keep electronic level display
- enhance metering and focusing (please more focusing points)
- loose video but keep all other shooting modes (although I mostly use M, Av and TAv)

Make it a camera for photographers, don't follow all the others.

Have you tried focusing with a focusing point that is not the center one on your Canon in dim light? No USM can help you if your focusing sensor sucks.

I agree, USM is great, but the prices of Canon glass are not so great.

You mentioned that your Canon glass sels for more now ... well, it's the same with Pentax glass. If I sold my glass now I'd have more money then all my glass was worth three years ago. And I think the same goes for Nikon too.

I don't agree that Pentax needs Sigma and Tamron to add to it's lens system ... I only have Pentax lenses and don't miss a thing.

Canon and Nikon are great, if you have enough money to buy high quality glass that makes use of that full frame sensor. If you really need FF and can justify it's price, then it's a good investment - otherwise it's just a huge waste of money.

In the end it doesn't really matter what you shoot with as long as you or the customer is happy with the results. :)

He probably doesn't want to spend 2k+ € on a new body, that's why he's considering the first 5D.

A friend of mine uses a 5D (first gen) and when he tried my K-7, he said: "I wish my 5D would focus like this."

He then elaborated that the only useful focusing point on the Canon is the center one and the other points are far worse than the ones on the K-7 (I imagine the K-5 would do even better here). He also said that the two wide focusing points are totally useless.

If you're mostly doing portraits and landscape, then I think this is not so much of a problem and the 5D is superior here. But considering sport shooting, I'd pick the K-5 instead.

Think about the lenses you'll need for the Canon ... and think L glass, otherwise you'll be disappointed.

Has anyone used a DA* 16-50 and/or 50-135 for more than 2 years?

Bought my DA* 50-135mm in October 2007 and it's been acting strange for the last two years now.

When I mount it on a camera and try to focus on something it's trying to move the focus but is failing or doing it very slow ... then after a couple of moments it starts operating normally. It's a bit annoying but I got used to it because it doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it starts focusing right away but then there are occasions when I turn the camera off and on and the lens locks up again.

I sent it back for repairs in July 2009 together with my K10D (shutter replacement) and they just looked at it and did nothing. I guess they'd have to send it to someone who does lens repairs as they're only qualified for body repairs - a bit off topic but they did that wrong too so I had to send the camera back twice because they didn't put it back together properly. Got fed up in the mean time and just bought the K-7 in August. :)

The 50-135 is still working as described earlier in the post and I'm fine with it. I don't want to pay for a new SDM and repairs or even a new lens. As long as it's working it's OK, I just wish Pentax would give an option in the camera settings to use the screw-driven motor for this lens.

Polarizer filter for DA12-24mm

Polarizers

I use a slim Sigma CPL for my 12-24 and I payed around 120 € for it. It produces nice polarization (deep blue skies, white clouds and enhances the contrast through the whole picture) and like some said - don't go cheap.

Some mildly edited examples of mine shot with the 12-24 and Sigma CPL:

Rumor of Pentax D FA 645 25mm f/4
Posted By fejker

This 75mm is quite short so the front element does not have to be that wide ... and besides it's f/2.8.
The mockup 100 mm is very long (not just mm wise but physically) so the front element for a f/2.0 would have to be quite big.

It's roughly the same with the limited lenses for APS-C. The 70 mm limited is a great example - 1 x 2.5 x 2.5 inches ; 4.8 ounces.

It would be great if this was a 135 mm f/2.0 or even a 100 mm f/2.0, but the length of that lens barrel combined with the front element (even if it is replaced with a bigger element) looks to be smaller than f/2.0. There still has to be room for weather sealing and SDM. :(
