After trying all the suggestions without joy I shot it off to Sun Camera Service in Toronto.
Got a response 3 days later and an estimate for $429.40 (Cdn)
parts=0
labor= 360.00
handling=20.00
Taxes= 49.40
Gave them the go ahead Saturday Feb 24th.
Now sitting (un) patiently waiting to get it back.
Having had 3 previous Pentax's I without any problems I never bothered to get a back up camera.
Old German proverb: Too zoon alt, too late schmart. Now have a bid in on one on Ebay.
Thanks all for the suggestions.(and sympathy).

3 to 3 1/2 years old both of them.
Your question jogged my memory. A couple of days before it quit I saw the battery level was 3/4. Thought it was odd as I had just shortly before replaced the battery in the camera with another charged battery right off the charger.
Then on the day the thing died I again saw the battery reading 3/4. This after only a couple of dozen shots. Then disaster struck.
I've no idea how to check the batteries out of the camera if such a thing is possible. Is buying new battery the only way to check?

My K-3 has suddenly failed to power on. Had been using it for 12-13 shots,then 20 minutes later tried to view the pictures but no power!
Manual say blame the battery but each of my 2 batteries were just charged fully only 20 odd shots ago.
Any suggestions or do I have to bite the bullet and send for repairs?

My problem is that it fails to focus sporadically.
Will work OK for a full day then the next day will fail. I then go through a whole routine of "turn off- Turn on serveral times, twist the focus ring back and forth , disengage the lens and reconnect. All this in no particular order and then suddenly it works. Some daysit happens more than once.
I spend most of my photo time with wildlife shots and the 300 stays on the K3 99% of the time. The few times I've used other lens it has not happened.
I am reluctant to send it away for repair as there is no guarantee it would screw-up in the shop.

The 2 posts show slight similarities to my problem except that my K5 actually takes extra pictures with the burst. Left them ( 1 intended 3 extras) on the camera card when I returned it.
If local gang are stymied I'll point them towards C.R.I.S. provided their egos will accept the advice. Thanx

Back a few weeks ago I posted a problem with my K5.
It would fire bursts randomly and erratically. Anywhere from 1 to 5 extra shots.
Nothing I could do would invoke a burst. It did it when it wanted to.
Consensuses from the forum was to send it in for repairs.
Did. With very detailed explanation of the problem. To Pentax Canada. Was without for 3 long weeks. Got it back with attached notes/comments/stated repair
In this order:
• camera very dirty
• dents on body
Remedy:
• updated firmware to 1.11
• cleaned camera
• Adjusted.
The "dents" weren't dents but chipped paint
The "Adjustment" was not explained. Who knows what the might have meant?
Checking the shutter actuations before and after the "repair" showed they had fired it 40 times.
Now after getting it back and only 12 shots taken the thing fired a burst of 4.
Phoned and was asked to send it in again with another detailed description of what I and it were doing when the burst happened. Send in the lens that I was using ( a DA 300 mm that had been repaired by them last year same time) and the SD card with the offending photos. As well as the battery.
Here I sit with one week already past without the thing.
Added note: The lens took 6 weeks to get back because Pentax Canada lost track of it in their facility.
At least they weren't looking for $95.00 to clean it as they had a couple of years ago when I had my K10D in for warranty repair.
Makes ya wonder wot?
Will update when I get it back.

Nope. Always gentle. And I am still under warranty. Going to hang in for a bit longer and see how it goes before shipping it in. 2 days of shooting with no repeats.

Set on Single frame shooting I am increasingly getting multiple shutter activations.
Sometimes just one added firing sometime up to three.
Sometimes there is an actual picture taken, sometimes not.
I press halfway, pause to focus/anti shake, then follow through with the press.
If I let up quickly one shot only is taken. If I hold down momentarily it may or may not fire 1 or more times.
This is not constant. I can take a couple of dozen shots (or more) without incident.
The extra pictures are not so much the problem but who needs unnecessary activations shortening my camera's life.
Is this a mechanical problem? Is it common?
Any suggestions please.

Pentax K20D complete package Asking Price
$500 CAD Item Location
Ontario Canada Item Description
K20D complete package including kit lens, 3rd party Battery grip and extra battery.
When I bought it there was a shutter count of only 256 which included factory testing , making it virtually new. There are now a mere 9500 actuations.
I want to sell it all as a package.
In addition to all original contents there is a Travor Battery grip & a second battery as well as the kit lens.
I have replaced the K20D with a K-5 and as I don't depend upon a camera for my livelihood, I've no need of a "backup" https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3193&pictureid=25205[/img] Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

I sure have no regrets. My shooting is 95% wildlife and already i am seeing far more keepers than with the K20D. particularly with the limited time I get to take the shot.

I'm guessing but I think what looks like colour noise likely a result of my sharpening efforts.
The day was bright overcast.
ISO =100

Most impressd with the AF speed. Lost lots of shots with the K20d while it fumbled around.
And you're probablyy right in that I might have gotten a bit carrried away with the sharpening.
The excitment got ot me.
