Yup, even worse, the 50-135 went from 899 or 895 to 1599 at Adorama. That Tamron 70-200 is looking a lot more attractive!

Anyone have a circuit board go on K-5

You'll see another thread nearby about the shutter going off by itself, but i actually think it's just the mirror moving, since no extra pix get taken. or maybe it's the shutter. but regardless, a bunch of people are having this problem, and it sure seems like a circuit board problem to me. i have had two cameras now doing this (the second not so badly yet), and it was set off by all kinds of different controls on the camera -- shutter, rear dial, af button, turning the camera on or off, even inserting a battery. this says to me that circuits are crossed, which seems like a circuit board. that this fault seems pretty common could be why they're back-ordered on circuit boards.

my first k5 started doing this all the time after about 3 mos. after 2 long months in repair and some complaining from me they finally sent me a new one, which started acting up in 2 or 3 weeks. for now it's still intermittent and mild, but something tells me it's toast.

it's possible pentax has a big issue on its hands. seems much worse than the sensor stain issue, though can't be sure how common it is.

K-5 bug - Shutter going off by itself

As posted earlier in this thread, my k5 had this rampaging mirror issue and was in repair for 2 months before they sent a replacement. After 4-5 very brief sessions, the new one did it as well, enough to ruin an afternoon's session with a model. A week later had a good evening, 2-300 pix w/ no issue. then i hurt my hand, don't pick the thing up for 3 wks, now it's doing it all the time -- many different controls cause it, including turning on the camera, turning it off, focusing w/ af button, even just inserting the battery. Seems like most any signal traveling in the camera will cause it. And yes, it's only happened when it's warm out -- but not that warm, it's in the 80's.

there is clearly an electrical problem with this camera. I am 0 for 2 and have hardly had a chance to use the thing(s). Very discouraging, esp.since I have a wedding to do in 4 wks, and that was the main reason i used to justify the upgrade.

As I posted on this thread a couple weeks back, I had a K5 in repair for two months for this issue, and they finally agreed to send me a new one. Took it out a few times, no issues at all, tickled to have it back. Yesterday for the first time I was out taking 'important' pix (location shots before a wedding with the bride) and the same damn thing started happening again. Previous time it took about two weeks to go from minor issue (a few extra mirror movements) to unbearable (many mirror movements from just about any control -- AF button, rear wheel, turning on, turning off. Yesterday this took about two minutes. I totally had to cut it short the camera was acting up so bad. And I have this wedding (only my second -- a freebie for a poor friend, but still) in just 5 weeks.

Also, I noticed this time what someone else said -- that when the camera freaks out like this, it somehow resets exposure to 125/F8. Had a bunch of highly overexposed pix from that.

Well, in addition to just moaning, I have a theory of what's going on -- there may be some kind of malfunction in the battery or the charger that's just frying the circuit board or whatever. Because yesterday morning I went to top up the battery, which generally takes like 5 or 10 minutes if I haven't taken many pix, and this time the green light on the charger was on for like two or three hours. I thought it was really weird, but I went with it, waited for the green light to go off before I took it out.

I don't know much about electricity or electronics (next to nothing, actually), but I wonder if somehow the battery was 'over-charged' and this fries something or another on the circuit board? Would be an incredibly shame to be repeatedly frying a fifteen hundred dollar camera because of a faulty 10 dollar charger.

Loaded up the pictures, and since then the camera has not been acting up. I'm gonna call pentax support just to discuss, but if it happens again I'm returning again and insisting on a new replacement.

started intermittently when taking a picture -- it would sound like it was taking two or three pix and only one would be taken. After a couple weeks of that, started happening when pressing the AF button -- mirror assembly would clunk clunk a few times before focusing. Then when turning on, then when turning the dials, or any other control. Seems like a circuit board kind of thing, like an electric problem, since every control on the camera started to cause this problem.

I sent mine in on 3/23, and I watched it go in and out of repair and "process hold" and parts order like four times on the CrisCam web site repair status page. Just today -- just today -- they finally decided to give me a new one. (after some follow-up on my part.) Lordy, I hope it's a good one.

Send it back or is it normal.

It does sound like yours is doing just what mine was doing, but is yours only doing it with one lens? Mine was doing it sporadically for a while, and at first just with the shutter button, but after a while it was doing it all the time, and with all the controls. It's totally night right though, you should send it back and request a new camera. I'm getting frustrated myself waiting for my K5 back -- I was tickled with it while it worked.

This happened *after* you got it back from repair? Oh no, mine is in for repair for this problem, I hope they manage to fix it. It's not the shutter opening and closing multiple times, it's the mirror assembly moving up and down. They know about this problem at Pentax. It started for me with just just shutter activation, causing multiple clunks which I first thought was the shutter opening and closing multiple times, but only one pic was always taken so that didn't seem to be it. Then it started happening repeatedly when I hit the AF button, and then it started happening with the rear dial. Seems like a circuit board issue, some signal leakage or something. I sent mine in almost six weeks ago, still waiting for it back. The guy on the phone knew exactly what it was. Very discouraging that yours was caused by the repair.

I got a system-generated request to make a post, so here it is. I do appreciate all the helpful advice and opinions people post on the forum. I've been lurking for a while, but never post.

I mostly do urban landscape types of pictures, I live in New York and last year lived in Buenos Aires, so if you like that sort of thing, you're more than welcome to take a look at my flickr page -- Flickr: dandeluca's Photostream
