The K-30 Black frame possible FIX!

Good move! K-70 is updated K-30 with a newer processor and better stabilization. Post your opinion of K-70. Interesting to know the K-70 low light performance. I assume it based on K-3 stabilization and sensor and on K-S2 for the rest. I was thinking about K-70, as the K-S2 was good for me.

I always had Olympus one or another by updating over one sometime two generations. Currently Olympus it is M10. Then I added K-30. Such a nice camera! From K-30 (failed aperture) stepped to K-S2. It was like K-30 but nicer. When my son got K-1, we exchanged the cameras: he got my K-S2 and I his K-3, as he wanted one smaller/lighter camera with the same lens mount. The K-3 and M10 together means two different chargers and batteries. However, difference in size and weight justify having both.

Why K-01? It has the same battery as K-3 and also based on K-30 without viewfinder and phase detect but instead slow contrast detect. I may rent K-01for a week ($30 for one week) to try, as not sure of its place in my collection (except the same battery :-) and its performance.

Pentax has a truly nice line of DSLRs for every taste except mirrorless.

You show K01 on you stamp image. What do you think about this camera paired with K-3 based on your experience. They have one thing in common - the battery :-)

Hi,
I decided not to fix it but I gave the camera to my grandson to dissemble it and have fun. However, he read the manual and set it to Shutter Priority and returned.

The Shatter Priority mode works well with the lenses which have an aperture ring. The same thing as Aperture Priority but in reverse :-)
Set ISO Auto from 100 to 800 (sometimes I change it to 100 to 3200 :-) and the camera is fine,

Thank you for additional valuable comments. In the past I have ignored this option. However, few days ago by an accident I watched a related youtube video with using Nikon. Tried M mode and it did not work. With pakinjapan help was able to try the Auto ISO and like it very much. Now switching from Av to Auto ISO.

Thank you to All

I was trying to set K-3 Auto ISO in Manual mode with no success.
Does K-3 Auto ISO works in M mode or I am doing something wrong?

I also have Olympus M-10. The Auto ISO works with all modes Av, Tv, M etc.

Thank you

Thank you! The link points to the helpful complete and detailed reviews.

---------- Post added 09-23-16 at 10:37 PM ----------

I often use DXO lens reviews. They rate sharpness in the equivalent megapixels. In one case my good lens 55-300 on K-50 shows 6Mp equivalent and the 50-200 is about the same, however 50-200 is very poor lens. The posted on forum numbers sound as average values for a poor lens. I agree the detailed review would be a better place to understand the lens quality.
Tank you to ALL!

Lens review:
What are the lens review scores mean?
For example the lens Pentax-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED
The shown scores are:
Sharpness 7.2
Autofocus 6.3

Does 6.3 for autofocus mean that only for 63 photos out of 100 AF worked?
or
only 63 users out of 100 like the lens autofocus?
or
only 63 photos out of 100 are in focus?

Thank you

"he image you showed here was taken with an f-stop of f/7.1. At that kind of f-stop I don't know how you could have much of anything out-of-focus, because a DOF calculator shows that a focal length of 17mm {taken from your EXIF} and f-stop of 7.1, means that if you had focused at 7', everything beyond 3.5' would be in focus; in fact, as I have already commented here, two weeks ago, when we were touring Quebec, I discovered that my K-30 was in MF mode, but looking through my pictures later, I could not determine when that happened because all of my pictures were sharp, demonstrating again that it is really really difficult to get out-of-focus pictures when you are using a smallish aperture."

Have you tried AF Fine Adjustment (Page 58 - User Manual). This function can save ao to 20 lenses (or values for zoom?)

This is not fun at all. I have dumped my K-30 as switched 100% to Black Frames and decided on K-S2. Now K-S2goes the same path. If it happened I may switch to K3, however no more lenses and accessories for K-S2 as the "may switch to K3" has the same weight as "may switch to Nikon or Olympus". Nikon and Olympus takes care of their customers. Pentax keeps quiet without any sign of feeling guilty.

Pentax K-S2. How to turn off green LED when the camera is turned ON,

I have found it (under wrench) and TURNED OFF. Somehow, search (CTRL+F) on my K-S2 pdf manual does not work for a two word search.
I am sorry for such simple question.

A Camera does NOT matter:

A guy who breaks a wrist and asks his doctor: "Doctor, will I be able to play the piano after this heals?" The doctor replies "Absolutely, no problem!" The man laughs, and points out that that's great, because he never could play the piano before!

IT IS THE LENS! :-)

My second camera is Olympus M10. I could not see a difference between two photos of the same taken by each camera up to ISG 800 ( may add 1600), Have not tested above 1600. M10 is a very nice camera!

Using K-30 with failed aperture unit (BLK frame)

I have several manual lenses and without the Green Button none of them worked correctly. Now I am confused after all the posts and will try to repeat #3 instructions tomorrow without and with Green Button. As I pushed the Green Button the aperture closed and hen opened, No picture taken. Then the next picture was taken with correct exposure, I thought that I understood why and how :-)

Can I use aperture ring of Pentax FA lens in aperture priority mode? - Photography Stack Exchange

Posted instructions (copy) from the link above. The M Mode + Green Botton have worked for me. It seems that now I can use my failed K-30.

Q:
Can I use aperture ring of Pentax FA lens in aperture priority mode?
I'm considering getting an FA Limited lens for my Pentax DSLR. The FA series has an aperture ring with an "A" setting for control by camera bodies that support it.
Can I instead use the aperture ring to set the actual aperture value in Av (aperture priority mode), letting the camera pick a shutter speed, or am I limited to the "A" aperture and have to use the thumb dials on the body to control aperture? I don't want to go full-manual mode.

A #1
To use aperture priority on Pentax dSLR with FA lens, you have to leave the aperture ring to "A" and select the aperture on body.
With aperture ring in A mode, the FA lens will behave just like a DA lens. You can use Av mode and set aperture on the body, shutter time will be calculated according to automatically measured exposure.
With aperture ring set on a specific aperture, the body does not know what you have set it to and would not be able to select shutter speed. By default, shutter will not work. You can enable using aperture ring in Custom Settings, but that will just enable using shutter - the lens will be used wide open regardless of the setting on aperture ring.
That's where the "crippled" part of the "crippled KAF2" mount on Pentax dSLR-s shows up - they do not have the mechanical linkage to read aperture settings from an aperture ring.

A #2

It's a shame; I would love to have a real aperture ring! Oh well, thanks for the tip. – Henry Jackson May 16 '11 at 12:46

@HenryJackson To get a real aperture ring that can be used in Av mode, you should get an older, non-A lens (e.g. something from SMC-M series). With such lens, the aperture selected will be in effect immediately. A Lensbaby with Sweet 35 Optics would also work similarly. – Imre May 16 '11 at 13:31
add a comment

A #3 !!!

Another thing to note about the use of the aperture ring when using manual lenses on Pentax bodies is that you'll need to press the green button to "stop down" before taking your shot. This triggers the aperture lever and so when you take your shot the lens properly closes rather than stays fully open. This procedure is required on the K series lenses. Via this method, the camera will be able to sense the proper light levels and offer a shutter speed. Note that this will only work in Manual mode. If you use Av, then the aperture will always be fully open. On the older non-automatic lenses (those without the aperture lever like the screw-mount lenses), when you stop down the iris will close and remain closed.
