Ah yes, DOF scale, pretty handy indeed. And it seems that (MF) film photography is not THAT sensitive when dealing with loss of sharpness when using smallish apertures. I've been looking for a "cheap" large format kit with movements control or a 645/67 kit. By looking at the landscape shots here it seems that small apertures with MF film gear are perfectly okay without tilting the lens.

These medium format photos are just awesome to watch! A question to tuco: What aperture did you use in that second Oregon coast shot? It seems to be plenty sharp all around the scene. Just wondering how much one can close the aperture without losing too much sharpness when using a non-T/S lens.

How about a tilt/shift lens? Any word on such device yet? That would surely cost an arm and a leg due to the huge image circle required.

Yeah, for traveling and hiking it is a lot of mass to carry. But replace the 70-200 with 180/2.8 when doing so and you'll still have a nice kit with a bit of reach. And about the body, I tried out a used D3 after using a D700 + BG combo for 9 months or so. D700 with grip looks like a semi-D3, but is really is NOT. First of, D700 is like 10mpix camera with it's ~95% something viewfinder. Then, the whole shutter-mirror-blackout action is much more intense with the D3 (D3x/D3s). D3 is also a bit smaller than D700 + BG but it has beefier grip for ultimate joy of handling.
Or, like alexeyga said, keep the D700 if the main purpose is traveling photography. My traveling Nikon kit would then be: D700 without BG, Zeiss 18mm ZF.2, 24-70 and finally 180/2.8. Also keep a bunch of extension tubes in the pocket for occasional macro stuff.

Sell everything and get:
D3x, Zeiss 21mm ZF.2, Nikkor 24-70 and 70-200 VR2 for starters. You definitely have the money. That would be my choice of kit. D3 type body is alone worth investment over D700 + it's really much more responsive and ergonomical.

What a bull**** replacement if that's for D700. 12mpix -> 16mpix is not THAT different and then, another battery grip damn it.

FF just because it would work as a true wide angle as well. But then again, one could always stitch with T/S lenses with ease. I believe Pentax will do the FF trick in few years. They just proved with 645D they are more than capable.

24/2 would be boring. 24/3.5 tilt/shift would rock considering the future FF-bodies. Now Pentax could do something original as well - make a sealed T/S lens.

Yes julia! It is indeed superb lens. On my list for sure. The 3rd shot with the staircase pops nicely.

Does that half-sensor mean a huge vertical line in the middle of the photos then? ;)

D3/3s/700 are often hyped for their high-ISO qualities, but what people normally do not realize is that with low ISO-settings they produce beautiful black where black should be. That is, shadows do not contain any colored artifacts etc. It gives nice tonality to the picture. |

I have been dreaming of 4x5" set. Some guy selling Linhoff Technika IV kit for about ~1000e, including one lens, one day but I just couldn't afford it for the time being. Blah. :(

Just meant that Nikon (and other manufacturers as well) should consider releasing models without AA-filter. Those hi-res alphas, 5dmk2, D3x and other major players in the field would all benefit from such modification. Leica has been doing it right with the current M-series. That D700HR mod is a good proof of concept.

Yes, screw megapixels and high ISO. Bring a Nikon which has no AA-filter instead. Because, for what it's worth, a mere Canon 5D produces sharper picture than D3s at low base ISO with equal lens. Nikon raws have less acuity than Canon images at the same resolution. And this is my own experience - 5D vs. D700.

Time to pull the tilt&shift lenses out of the pocket with hi-res sensors. Then, f/8 is more than enough for average landscapes.

I do have K200D (had K20D), Canon EOS3 and D700. I use K200D occasionally with Voigtlander Nokton 55mm and the EOS3 is a stresstoy right now - the grip so funky to handle. I had few lenses for EOS but the mirror of my 5D blew clean off so I got D700 instead as my main system. You should get FA31mm ltdf for Pentax, 14-24mm (or 18 & 21mm distagons) for Nikon and 70-200 & 85mm 1.8 for Canon if you want a 3way system.

Doing HDR with jpegs equals shooting one's own leg. Same with exposure fusion. 16bit TIFFs are good for fusion if the camera can spit them out.

D700 + MB-D10 beats your 1Ds in size! :D Although, the 1Ds is better to handle.

Yes, 7D's pixel size is so tiny, that everything except the very best lenses will give soft results. Check this: Leica S2 Field and Studio Review
"The best current lenses are able to out resolve sensors with pixel pitches in the 6 micron range. Once we get below 5 microns (if we can do so without compromising image quality in pro-grade sensors) even the best current lenses may become the limiting factor. Note the use of the words "best lenses". While top lenses have an edge, everyday lenses are easily out-resolved by today's sensors."
So putting a dim crappy pile of glass in front of 7D (4.3µm square pixel pitch) is guaranteed to fail.

Yes yes, that is all true. Getting a lens that fits the scene best, but...every bit of flare gets more or less magnified with HDR processing. If the purpose is to capture funky flares then almost every lens will do. With HDR you want to register intense hilights with detail which means you'll have to be careful with angle of the lens in relation to the light source(s). Almost every lens will flare somewhat and here the Pentax SMC coating is the cure for flares/ghosting. For example Pentax DA18-55 kit lens is more flare resistant than Sigma 10-20mm (old version) without any filters.
And if filters are used, then it's the quality of the filter which plays a large part in your kit's flare resistance, not the lens itself. A good example here: Polarizing filters test - Results and summary - Lenstip.com
My advice would be that get modern Pentax SMC coated lenses with B+W filters (especially when looking for polarizer) for modern Pentax cameras when doing HDR captures. Yes, Marumi DHG polarizer was excellent in that test which I linked but good luck finding those...

Get a lens that won't flare badly when pointed at the sun or bright light sources.

Ahh, the rusty car&bike wreck with Leica M9 like discoloration and that final one are awesome. Now did that car ran over some biker? Maybe not but the wreckage brings nasty things into mind. The final shot is pure timeless vision.

K20D files taken with IS01600 printed out just fine in A4 size. No problems there. If the original exposure wasn't underexposed, the noise is levels are overally on the non-existent side. Tested with Canon Photo paper semi-gloss.
