Use your Gear randomly

Since I now have over 90 lenses when am I going to use them all? Even deciding which one to put on the camera is a hard decision. So I googled the internet for something to help me and found this:

Random Thing Picker

I put a list of all my lenses in there, and it generates a random choice. That is the lens I will put on my camera. If I do so every day I will end op using all of my lenses eventually. It's first pick was the CZJ DDR Tessar 50mm 2.8

I bought the Canon and immediately returned it without taking a shot. That qualified me to be a retired professional photographer, which qualifies me to be a consultant. For a small fee, I will suggest to you which other Canon gear you need to grow your business.

A few weeks ago, I clicked all the appropriate buttons and gave PF my support for another year. Why not? It needs funds to be viable, and I enjoy it, so I support it.

But I thought to myself, "that's just too easy." It takes work to run a website – any website – and this one is exceptionally well run. There should be a bit more to my support than clicking the PayPal button. So with this note, I want to add my thanks.

I love this site. It is populated by civil, respectful, thoughtful people interacting with civil, respectful, thoughtful conversations. This alone makes it more than unique.

There is a cosmopolitan substance to Pentax Forums. We are a global cohort and that allows us all to learn and share our experiences and resources on a worldwide platform. And because we are such a civil group, we open our minds to the knowledge that each brings to the table. This serves to make our forum experience broad, deep, and rich.

The knowledge base here is, to me, astonishing. There seems to always someone who has the resources to help. Do you have a question about some 40-year-old lens you bought on E-bay? Are you spreading your wings and need help understanding a new technique? Or perhaps you are just a new guy who wants to venture away from the auto mode. Not to worry, the Pentax Forums membership has your back. Your question will be answered – and without condescension.

Are there arguments and disagreements? Oh, I hope so. There should be. After all, how can learning occur without questions and debate? But these disagreements – er, debates – occur, for the most, with civil, respectful, and thoughtful discourse (familiar words?). And they are great learning opportunities for those of us who aren’t knowledgeable enough to join the discussion.

Of course, all of this does not occur in a vacuum. Adam sets the tone and keeps things running smoothly. But he does not do this alone. There are moderators and contributors and a core of sages who pull all of this together to make and keep this a special place. I am guessing that nothing happens without this group. To all of you, my applause and my thanks.

So thank you, everyone, for allowing me to join you in good fellowship and bonhomie. I look forward to another year at Pentax Forums.

I realize this seems very “lilacs and roses.” I can hear you thinking, “I can’t believe this guy likes everything about PF.” Well, you are right. My tee-shirt design has never been chosen, and that ticks me off.

I spend a lot of time here at PF. Maybe too much? I have two broken feet, can walk but with some pain and difficulty and my knees are also beginning to fail. I do as little stressful activity as I can avoid...and on top of that, being retired for about 10 years, I am lazy as hell! :D
So this is a fun and enlightening site to spend time.:) I learn things often, visit with my many friends and in general have a great time here. It is clean fun, healthy and entertaining and helps keep the mind...what's left of it...sharp and active.:D:D

That's me. Having been here for years, I see all kinds of posters.....many have also been here forever, some come and go and some have been instrumental in keeping PF the great site it is. :)

So, thinking often of the various "kinds" of posters.....I have come up with a list.....maybe you can add more, and feel free to do so..this is an open thread for your comments or observations, all intended to further our pleasure here. :):)

The Serious Shooter: Takes his/her work very seriously. Sometimes it seems that photography is his/her most important part of life, and not much else matters. Not much interested in conversation or dialogue of any type, just in excelling in what they shoot.;)

The Technocrat: Very knowledgeable in the technical aspect of photography. Knows things and words many of us can't even spell or pronounce, much less render a meaning. Often posts few photos but is an expert on the technical aspect of the cameras used and how to use them.

The Troll: Thankfully, we see few of these here at PF. They are "flamed out" lickity-split most of the time......they know everything, surpassing all other shooters in their wealth of knowledge and skills. Yep, we know then well, no need to go more into it! :(

The Joker: Here to have some fun.:) May or may not post some images and may or may not have some basic skills, but is always looking for a little fun. Sometimes irritating, sometimes a little relief that brings a smile....and always ready to jump in and get involved.....for the good or bad of it. :):D

The Lurker: Mostly in the shadows, only comes out occasionally and injects into a conversation. Usually posts few pictures, or if does so, does so without much if any comment. Sort of the Groundhogs of PF?

There may be more types, feel free to add your thoughts. Keep in mind that ALL of these are a part of this wonderful site and regardless of our views or category, we are ALL a part of what makes the gears turn so well here. I would miss any one of these groups, they have equal importance in my PF browsing pleasure. I can get help, answers, view shots that are far beyond my capabilities and admire their abilities and/or gear. I can have fun and get a smile on my face with regularity.....heck, I can even see a naked girl every so often:D in one of the many, many Forums here....what more could you ask for?:) We have it ALL...and it is because of ALL those variations in personalities that make the puzzle fit perfectly.

Your thoughts are most welcome! :D

Regards!:)

Gonna add this one! I certainly overlooked it! (Thanks Skodadriver!:))

The Novice:
New to Pentax forum and often asks for help on subjects that have often been previously explained in many threads.
Attracts the kinder members of the forums who do provide help.
Sometimes attracts a comment from the Troll.
Will learn how to search the forum threads with the correct search word or phrase and read the words of wisdom written therein.
Will marvel at the science provided by the Technocrat.
Will not necessarily understand aforesaid.
Will marvel at the stunning images.
Will eventually understand that getting such stunning images is not necessarily about having the best equipment...though it can help.
Will spend more and more time reading the posts (getting comments from their partners about spending so much time looking at the screen....or looking at images the birds photographed in the garden).
Will wonder about squirrels and Otis.

Its a damn good article, i read it myself this morning.. We have seen a decline here in NZ, but we are also lucky here in NZ that unlike the U.S. where sale taxes are a State thing, our Sales Tax aka GST is a central govt policy and not left up to provincial regions to decide how much sales tax to apply so people will shop inter state in the USA to save 2-5% on taxes alone.
It is true many specialist shops here in NZ are/have closed, but like the US where many put so much of their reliance on film processing and not the actual hardware they are the ones that are closing faster, because a roll of 36exp film to do a 1hr process on had pretty damn good markups.
I don't think we will see the big brands disappear from NZ, as we have a pretty robust group of companies who are in NZ, Canon control their camera distribution themselves, Olympus are also the same, they control the distributor here in NZ, Nikon use a long standing NZ company, and Sony/Panasonic look after their own distribution. Most of the major companies now have regionalized warranty systems in place. When i first started in retail photographics, it was weird to see a regional warranty card, now its the other way around, to see a global warranty is a bit special. The camera companies started introducing the regional warranties as a way to combat grey imports. Canon for example, if you were to send a grey imported camera to their service center in Akl, the last time i checked, their service charge on a grey market warranty claim was $175+ GST an hour! Canon do this, as several years ago, with the EOS350D model, they found out of 12 Grey market cameras bought in stores, and online in NZ, nearly 80% of the cameras were not genuine Canon cameras or refurbished cameras being sold as new.
Pentax I believe is one of the few optical companies still offering a global warranty, but here in NZ, if the camera is a grey market camera, it will be serviced, but a service fee will be applied as the Pentax service center have to verify the authenticity of the camera.
Sure places like B&H in NY will ship nearly anything here to NZ, but the big thing to remember, is by buying local, from proper photo stores, you will get advice, proper after sales care. Here at southern cameras, if you by a DSLR or Mirrorless camera off us, we will do up to 2 sensor cleans a year for FREE, do firmware updates for free for 2 years, and help out with any problems, when you come back no matter how long ago it was you bought the camera and you will get proper NZ approved warranties, and not have to pay courier fees to send anything back to have a warranty claim on.
Also, if you actually look at most pricing these days, NZ is actually pretty competitive with global prices. The Pentax KP, B&H have the body only listed for $1099, + $47 odd to ship it, which works out to be around the $1650 mark in NZD, but when you add the $295 in GST AND Customs import fees, it works out around $1950, which honestly, i can match and probably beat (i will have to look on Monday when i am back in store) So why would you piss around trying to import a camera then have it go wrong and have to send it back to the US or Aus to get serviced? (I know some here do not like the NZ Pentax wholesaler)

Oh yeah there are some very dishonest people out there making massive money from blackmarkets etc. Its not just limited to handbags and jewellery now either, there have been cameras, tvs, memory cards are another commonly 'cloned' product, batteries. There are companies who will produce pretty damn convincing replica cars like the Ferrari La Ferrari, Pagani Zonda's etc like this crowd

The first couple of cameras to go into the service center were grey imports that were sold as new cameras, and turned out to be either a refurb or camera built from parts, so Canon sent techs out to these stores around Auckland, purchased another 10 cameras and stripped them, and found most were either refurbs or built from parts cameras which when plugged into the diagnostic system delivered different serial numbers to what was on the outside of the camera, or in at least one case, an unknown serial number aka it never existed as a completed camera from the factory.
The big thing especially with from parts cameras, is that the packaging was good enough to fool most consumers, it was only when those in the know bought these things and found that the colors didnt match up right, the manuals etc didnt look quite right, and then when they plugged the cameras into diagnostic software that such things were found.

Watch out for dihydrogen monoxide it can be very deadly if inhaled!

Dihydrogen monoxide:
  • is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.

  • contributes to the "greenhouse effect".

  • may cause severe burns.

  • contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.

  • accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.

  • may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.

  • has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
  • as an industrial solvent and coolant.

  • in nuclear power plants.

  • in the production of styrofoam.

  • as a fire retardant.

  • in many forms of cruel animal research.

  • in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.

  • as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.
