DA* 16-50 trouble focusing in low light on k5 and kx

Thanks for the information guys, I will have to try the live view trick and see if there is an improvement, thankfully a majority of my shooting is done outside! May be worth looking at possible repair. I have a small spot in the lens that may be fungus (I've treated it with uv light and it hasn't changed in size or shape in 2 years so it could be dust or glue also) and some barrel rocking at 50 mm. It may be worth parting ways with this lens. How is the k3? I've been in love with my k5 since I bought it 3 years ago.

Hello,

I have a DA* 16-50, I have had it since 2008. I have used it in 4 bodies including a k110d, k20, Kx and k5. I have thought for a while now that the lens seems to struggle in low light, recently I purchased a 50-135 from the marketplace and that confirmed it for me. When I say low light I mean interior lighting such as in my house. My workspace where I do photo editing and ebay photos, etc is generally about a -.7 ev (rough guess). Even with focus assist lighting the lens absolutely crawls to find focus. Most of the time I have to rotate it to about where it needs to be and it will tune itself in the rest of the way, it will not quickshift in my house, if I take it outside it works just fine, still a hair slower than it was when it was new, but usable. This issue is unique to this lens and it behaves the same way on the Kx and the k5. My other lenses including:

Sigma 135-400
Sigma 10-20
Pentax fa 50
Tamrom 28-200
Pentax 50-135

All work without issue on both bodies and under the same conditions. I don't feel like this is an sdm issue as I've had the lens almost 8 years without a failure. I had a sigma 70-200 2.8 where the hsm failed and the af just didn't work at all. This works inside but literally if I held on the same spot, not moving it would probably take 30 seconds to lock focus, it makes no difference how much contrast the subject has either. All my lenses are kept quite clean, I recently cleaned the rear contacts which showed minimal improvement afterwards. Anyone ever delt with a similar issue? If so, how did you fix it?

I got a K20D one week ago today, is there any way to completely eliminate any and all noise reduction settings, I do a lot of night shots and long exposures and I am not too keen on that wait time
