Building a Pentax system

hcc: What a shame!

sterretje: I've looked at it. Seems a bit slow though.

B Grace: The size and weight reduction is quite significant and becomes apparent when using the camera everyday.

Ideally, I'd opt for Leica - but I'm not really that rich, although I could afford an M9 body and a Nokton from what I get from selling my 5D system and lights.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

The 60-250 is probably a nice lens, but it's not very interesting for me because of it's size and weight. I probably won't need more tele than the DA 70/FA 77 provides. Nice to have the option anyway though!

hcc: The Nokton in particular looked interesting, with a FOV almost equal to my current EF 85 1.8 on FF. But that would make the DA70 redundant.

Big part of the reason going with Pentax in the first place are their lenses, especially the Limiteds with their metal build, and the pancakes.

I've owned a Sigma 18-50/2.8, and I didn't like it. I hate the finish, the colours are dull and very prone to flare. So I would rather not walk down that path again.

I should also mention that I'm a prime guy!

Hello there! My name is Ole. I've been shooting Canon for the past two years, but now I'm longing home for Pentax. My very first DSLR was a Samsung GX-10 (basically a K10D), and I even had the 43 ltd. for a while. However, back then, the GX-10 couldn't compare with the 5D, and alas, I made the jump.

Now I want to come back. The new K-5 looks like a fantastic camera. Very capable at high isos, built in IS and high DR makes this an attractive camera to me. The small size and lightweight options are also tempting for the kind of shooting I do - I mainly shoot people. Both staged and candid shots. You may have a look at my flickr if you wish. Having a compact kit is something I've learnt to value over these years, and my Canon 5D doesn't really provide it.

The K-5 looks like it will be excellent for my type of photography. A lot more silent than my 5D, smaller, less obtrusive, lighter, better at high isos, built in IS, rugged build (quite important up here in Norway!).

However, I'm not sure which lenses to get for the K-5. I've been using my 5D almost exclusively with the 35mm f/1.4L. That lens gives a very nice fov for me on the FF 5D. The eq. for Pentax would be a 24mm, but there seems to be a hole in Pentax' lineup here.

I also want a longer lens, and I've pretty much decided on the DA 70 due to it's tiny size.

I'm considering to get the legendary 31mm ltd. as well, to act as a normal lens.

Basically, this leaves me:

Wide: ???
Normal: FA 31mm ltd.
Tele: DA 70mm ltd.

I would love suggestions on how to solve this. By the way, I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to post this - if it isn't, please, tell me.

Thanks in advance!

The 43mm ltd. is indeed a fantastic piece of equipment. It is _perfect_ for portraits (I don't justify it though).

Here's a portrait of my friend, and a 100% crop of his eye. What sharpness.

Neat! Only "flaw" I can see is that she has a slight halo around her, but it doesn't bother me much.

Also: JAWDROP at your lenses. I want that lineup too. Too bad those DA*'s are so expensive :<

hahahaha, it's so funny that you mention his untidy facial hair-growth, we actually like to tease him for that (he shaves like once every month, LOL). but i feel that it's a part of his personality so therefore i won't clone them away unfortunately 8)

I prefer the first shot aswell, I think it has a pretty cool mood to it.

For the second shot, I agree its quite distracting. All these shots were made in the hallway in my school, and there are alot of closets enclosed with locks there, and that's one of those locks by his chin ;)

by the way - these shots are really casual, no setup or anything. I just went up to their faces with my flash and the 43mm and improvised, haha ^^

I brought my flash and camera to school today. Had some fun model flashing my friends till they laid rolling on the ground in seizures (no of course I didn't, I'm a good friend!), then I tried taking some shots. I was pretty surprised how easy it was to get a pretty good-looking portrait, just shooting with bare flash! Flash in the left hand, camera in the right, I took a few.

Mike: What you say there is very true. That's why I think being a photographer is not just a hobby but a way of life aswell. Wise words! :)

vievetrick: It's a bit funny that you mention "Money", cause I've just learned the guitar solo in the song Money by Pink Floyd recently :)

distorted_vision: Breaking the norm is something I really like doing - I guess it's because if you succeed then you can feel really proud of doing something unique. That feeling is something I sought for! At the same time though I don't want to be completely unorthodox ;)

Thanks for the encouraging comments buddy, it's really motivating!

I will try to bring a model car from home this weekend. I assume you mean those small toy-like things? I think my siblings have a few of those at home.

JMR: Thanks for that! :)

Isaac: Yeah, it worked better than I expected. Thanks for the nice comment bud, also for adding me on flickr :) you got some quite awesome shots yourself ;)

The setup for the last picture was far from perfect. I actually handheld the camera with the right hand while dropping the coin with the left (bet I looked real stupid, happily I live by myself, haha).

ll_coffee_lP: thank you! awesome to hear :D

Nowhere Matt: actually that clock was given to me by my grandmother last weekend because my cellphone didn't do the job all right (i turn it off the millisecond it starts ringing, subconsciously, causing me to oversleep). however, this one is from the 80s or something, and its really noisy. TICK-TACK TICK-TACK TICK-TACK. and the alarm was even worse, it was like a nuclear plant meltdown. i hate this clock so bad :( thank you for the comment! :)

OPTMEKX&: thank you very much bud ;)

legacyb4: actually, i used the 360 on-camera, bouncing it in the roof for every shot except for the coin shot, where i placed it on the cameras right side. the built in flash has to be pointed up to send the signal to the 360, but i have turned the onboard flash off in the menus, so it doesnt affect the photograph.

yeah, my window is pretty neat for shooting with a flash, since all the walls are white, they also work as reflectors :)

I got my AF-360-FGZ flash today after school, and immediately bought two A2-papers to use for background. Then I set things up in my window like this:

Then I just looked around for things to shoot. Basically just testing.

Nearly no PP at all. I must say I'm really happy with the results, considering this is my first time using an external flash ever :D

opened the box a few hours ago and i'm LOVING it already! it's so small and handy, and the focal lenght is suited for nearly everything!

here's a few shots, all made in crappy light 8D

my dad

my sister attempting to brush her teeth

this one i softened up a bit in lightroom by decreasing clarity.

this is a 20 second exposure of how it looks around my place at night:

i looked at that photograph with 100% crop, and the detail was _amazing_. i love how it renders.

i'm so going to wear this out!

Sorry, I probably phrased myself wrong. What I meant was that if the field of view equalled a higher focal length. I.e. field of view on 43mm f/1.9 is tighter than field of view on 43mm on the kit lens. I didn't mean to say that the focal lenght magically changed, it was the field of view I was referring to, sorry for confusing you (a bit confused myself).

hello there :)

i just bought the fa 43mm f/1.9 ltd, and i'm wondering about its focal lenght. i read somewhere that on digital, its not 43mm, because of a different format or something. say - what does the 43mm equal then, compared to the 18-55 kit? does 43mm on the kit lens equal the same focal lenght as the 43mm f/1.9, or?

thanks ;)
