Upgrading from Tamron 18-250

Firstly, that is a super pic posted by PentaxPoke and it aptly demonstrates the capability of the 18 - 250.

There is a review of this lens in the Lens Review section and largely based on the very sharp pic in there I bought one.
I have not been disappointed with my purchase. That lens can produce sharp pics.

If anyone is basing their opinion on a handheld shot in poor light at the "far" end of it's range then that may not be a fair test.

Yesterday I read a review in the UK magazine Practical Photography of the 18 - 250 and the reviewer absolutely rubbished the lens.
I could not believe what I was reading. Whoever wrote that must have a hidden agenda.

Pentax 1.4 Teleconverter

Had a look at the Lens Database, but there are no reviews posted.

Can anyone comment on the picture quality obtained using the Pentax 1.4 converter, please?

I note that it is manual focus, but can live with that.

Database mentions that compatibility with DA & DA* lenses is unknown. That info would be very important.
Can anyone say if the converter will work with DA lenses, please ?

[QUOTE=Entropy;450248]For the benefit of other UK users, you should name the dealers in question, as both have been caught lying to you.

The Pentax 18-250 is definately still in production and still in stock from reputable dealers that don't pull the "we don't have it so we'll lie about it" trick. etc.

Little bit of a mystery in this.

I know both dealers personally and they have always given excellent service.

The first one just said the lens was discontinued and did not offer any alternative.

The 2nd dealer (where I bought the lens) had old Pentax stock and could have sold me the Pentax version, but advised me to take the slightly cheaper Tamron - and threw in a skylight filter too.

However, I have emailed Pentax UK about the situation and have posted the story on UK forums (one of which will contact their Pentax rep).

I am beginning to think that this is a UK marketing problem in that the vast bulk of independent lenses are advertised as N or C fit only.

I have been scrutinising the magazine ads since last July and have only seen the Tamron 18-250 in N & C mounts. However, on reading the documentation with the lens it clearly has always been made in N, C & P mounts.

Probably Nikon and Canon have captured the market here to such a large extent that independent lenses in other mounts are not stocked to the same extent as C & N.

I actually checked with 2 dealers and got the same story.
2nd dealer could supply the Pentax labelled lens as he had a few left, but gave me the Tamron one at a cheaper price.

I was looking to buy the above lens (UK purchase) but today I was told by the dealer that it is now discontinued (although a few can still be found).

However, that lens is the very same one that Tamron have marketed for Nikon and Canon.

Good news is that Tamron now offer that lens in Pentax fit and at a slightly lower price (in UK) than the Pentax labelled lens can be obtained for.

K200 v K20 question

Can anyone give me a definitive answer to this:-

If exactly the same lens, same ISO, WB, shutter speed, aperture (and all other possible camera settings), same subject and lighting were used on K20 and a K200.

i.e. everything was identical except for the camera bodies.

Would there be any noticeable difference on an A4 size print or even on an A3 size print.

choosing a polarizer?

[QUOTE=rpriedhorsky;435685]All,

I have a Pentax DA 18-250 in the mail. I'd like to get a polarizer for it. But I'm not sure how much I need to spend to get a good one. (I assume that for this lens, I need a "slim" or "wide-angle" filter.)

I have a Kenco polarizer and am very disappointed with it. It's effect at reducing reflections and saturating colour is very slight irrespective of light direction.

I have an old Hoya polarizer left over from my 35mm film days and it's performance is quite dramatic. Pity it's the wrong size for my Pentax lenses.

Any chance that you can post your opinion of the 18 - 24mm zoom after trying it out.
I'll probably be looking for one later this year.

Can anyone say if the remote control can be used to hold the shutter open for several seconds when the camera shutter is on the B setting.

Camera manual does not appear to cover that point.

Thanks
