Very little reading of the User Manual as it almost all images depicting various histogram types. Then you can get the software and try them on your own data.
Enjoy,

I have modified both the User Manual and the software. Can be had from link Dropbox - HISTOGRAM-TRANSFORMS-USER-MANUAL.pdf .

User Manual has more example data and software is a little faster. From a user request, I changed the output of 1-D R and 1-D C Histograms to be like 1-D Y as far as axis usage (like Waveform used n video work).

Still need someone with MAC and XCode to help build MAC version. Software and XCode projects are ready but I don't have a MAC.:(:(

Advanced Histogram Photoshop plugin

Long before digital cameras entered the scene, I began looking for tools to help analyze digital images. The Histogram and a few statistics like mean, medium, standard deviation, and range were what was being used. These tools were available in Photoshop and a couple of other commercial products. When Photoshop began offering floating-point (32 bit per color) processing, the Histogram was no longer available so I learned how to make a Plugin for Photoshop which output the Histogram as an additional layer for floating-point data. This still left me feeling that there should be other tools. I played with many ideas but they were no different is content about the original image. Many of the images I was working with were not photographic in creation so the Histogram usage was different but fit with the original statistical models which is not overly true with camera generated data. I tried what I call the 1-D X and Y Histogram methods which people in the video world started to use under the name of "Waveforms" for the version running the Histograms down the Y axis. For what the video world was using it for was really good for motion but for me using on still images was too complex to unravel. Some time later I decided to put some thought into this and came up with the 3-D Isotropic-Range and 3-D Cumulative-Range Histogram methods.

These two and the other methods mentioned are included in the Photoshop plugin which I will be placing into open-source world of software. The Plugin is tied to a Photoshop script which the user supplies the parameters.

I have placed a User Manual at: HISTOGRAM-TRANSFORMS-USER-MANUAL.pdf . From within the manual are instructions of where to download the plugin and script, how to install it, and how to use them. At present, the Plugin is available for WINDOWS but NOT available for MAC as I don't have access to a MAC and XCode software to compile it. Not too long ago I was able to compile on MAC and have it run as it should. Any volunteers to help with the compile please PF me. Plugin and script should work on Photoshop CS6 and all CC versions.

There are a few data examples in the user manual which should explain the various algorithms used to generate the Histogram methods. Please spend some time viewing the examples before you try it.

I would hope the some of you will try the FREE software and share your experience with the tools.

You are correct that only the Cloud APIs are no longer available but I had another note that I can't find saying there would be no further support for any of the APIs.

I would not expect Ricoh to fix bugs in anything except what they ship as theirs.

Ricoh has stopped support and withdrawn the SDKs. I was notified by email from them some time ago about their decision.

I remember, back in the '50s, of seeing the Coors beer truck stop at the Convent next to the school across from where I lived. Bet the driver could relate some stories to his deliveries.

Pixel Shift with LightRoom Classic CC & Camera Raw

Pixel Shift is not a stacking process and neither RT nor LR de-mosaic the PS data as removal of the Bayer pattern is inherit in the process of compositing the four shots. When using RT in handling the movement compensation, RT applies a de-mosaic process and uses that data in areas deemed to be needing movement compensation and does compositing over the rest of the image.

My entry was added to emphasize that the histogram does not represent what one might think it does. The manufacturers are not giving us what they should as far as optimization of raw data. What I didn't mention was "what does the histogram really mean." unless there is other info, the histogram can be very misleading.

The histogram is derived from the in camera processed jpg setup. I've found from the K-1 that what parameters are chosen for saving the jpg file can affect the histogram especially the high end. In shooting "Bright", the right edge of the display is usually higher than for "Natural." Neither one really represents the RAW data. If shooting jpg only, that is fine but for RAW shooters are not getting much benefit from the histogram or blinkee.....

I've requested of Pentax a number of times to offer a RAW histogram but have never heard anything from them.

Do any of the other brands offer a RAW histogram?

PS and LR both perform the compositing of the four Pixel Shift shots which are contained in the DNG or PEF and then outputs a single file. Neither have a movement compensation ability. Even though it is more cumbersome to use, RawTherapee is my preferred method of handling Pixel Shift files. In that Sony is offering Pixel Shift, Adobe recently has showed some interest in the movement problem but I haven't heard anything about updates to ACR or LR.

Savoche,
Thanks for the response and especially your comment about Jonas' video which is all you need to use the action.
We think that the tool is very useful and are disappointed at the opportunity to place notice of its availability. Two other forums made me take my comments down. PF doesn't attract many who use these kinds of tools. Pass it along to others who have use.
Cheers,

How do you know that it is not available in the API? I'll bet that the backend(camera) is the same for all and so is the communication from camera to device (phone etc.) but the documentation is usual Pentax. Each one was probably written by a different person with things missing in each. Have an honest try and don't trust the docs.

Guys,
I've played with something for a while. It is a Spatial Frequency by octave Photoshop script. You input you file and it outputs a file with the input, DC, and eight octaves as layers. You can then review to identify within each octave your weak or strong portions you wish to fix. I'm hoping that this extra separation makes the anomalies apparent for you.

Because these are normal looking layers, you can burn, dodge, whatever you wish to make stronger or weaker. Once you have id'd the areas and applied the cure, you can then run a companion script to put is all back together into a single layer. This Photoshop script is located at: __SST-Save.zip. Unzip it, and copy to the script folder in Photoshop. This should run on Win or Mac Photoshop CC. The file used as input should not be your original but a copy and probably should be flattened before calling this routine.

The companion script is broken right now but try to see if Spatial Frequency separation allows you to identify the anomalous areas.

Have a try please and I'll fix what I screwed up in the companion.

Cheers,
RONC :D

Andrea,

Have a look at this from the USB C++ SDK Capture Settings:

Code:

std::unique_ptr fNumber(new FNumber());

cameraDevice->getCaptureSettings(std::vector{fNumber.get()});

const std::vector& availableFNumberSettings = fNumber->getAvailableSettings();

// The list above might contain the following values.

// F4.0 (F4_0), F4.5 (F4_5), F5.0 (F5_0)

I think all of the parameters are in the WiFi SDK but it is not explained.

This gives the available aperture setting for the attached lens. Just what is needed for Focus Stacking.

I decided to show what happens with a larger gap as well as a black gap. Also I retained the full width when inserting the gap and worked the gaps from the center to the edges.

WHITE GAP
Top: Starting file
Mid: Overlay gaps on Top
Low: Insert gaps between trisected Top

Attachment 438076

BLACK GAP
Top: Starting file
Mid: Overlay gaps on Top
Low: Insert gaps between trisected Top

Attachment 438075

I prefer the gaps overlain on both but the dark background is better in my view. You could paint a dark rectangle on the wall around the images.

Interesting simulations.

Jeff,

Glad you found a solution. Is it possible that you could put a screen dump here so others can see what you did in the Photoshop comparison? I'm fascinated by the geology depicted in the image. Where was the image acquired? Near you hobbit hole?

How large is the gap going to be? If small like an 1" or 2", I'd try to preserve the continuity. If large like 5" or more, doesn't matter. My son-in-law did one with frames and the gap is too large with frame and trisecting the wide photo. Why not try doing it in Photoshop and stand different distances from the various gaps. Make the background same as wall where images will hang.

Really interesting image!! :D :D
