Win Me Over on the K100D

Thanks a lot, your opinions and observations about the two cameras have helped me (even though it's a close match). I can clearly see that my next step is to have some hands-on time with both of these cameras, which I will hopefully be able to do this weekend. I actually might be able to rent out one of these for a few days. I have a feeling my decision will be a lot easier then.

I have read most of the reviews on both of these cameras at least three times over, but I haven't spent a great deal of time comparing and contrasting the images, and looking for what specific image details I want most. I will admit that I can't think of many practical situations where I would need continuous shooting. I can see instances where I would use exposure bracketing though...

Just like my last post, I've gotten some good response here. I will say, though, if I do buy the Pentax, I'll have a good community to share knowledge and experiences with.

Win Me Over on the K100D

I am someone who, when presented with two similar useful objects, can find flaw and fortune everywhere. Right now I need a few of you to win me over on purchasing a Pentax K100D this Christmas over a Nikon D40. My concerns with the K100D are specific:
  • It's Pentax. It has a long history, but the top contenders these days are Canon and Nikon, hands down. What does Pentax have now that is superior to Nikon?

  • Buffer memory. Continuous shots aren't up to par with the D40.

  • Lens quality. Nikkor glass is great, but I'm mostly unfamiliar with Pentax lenses. Should I stick with Sigma?

I do recognize the benefit of having built-in shake reduction and the convenience of using AA batteries.

Obviously, most of you are probably Pentax owners and as such, chose it over another brand for certain reasons. If you truly recommend the D40 over the K100D, please post and explain why.

I posted a thread back in January when I really began researching these two cameras. Obviously, I still haven't come to a solid decision, so any help or personal insight that you can provide would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Render Delay

Ah, I think I've heard of the dark frame subtraction before. I'm glad that cutting that off eliminates the delay. That will come in handy for things like lightning photography, but I'd probably be better off leaving it enabled for night sky photos since hot pixels and stars might be hard to discern. And yes, I've seen worse hot pixel problems than that, which is pretty reassuring. Thanks for the help!

Very interesting lightning photo by the way.

Render Delay

Since I'm interested in using my Pentax camera (if I'm lucky enough to get one) for long-exposure and nighttime photography, about how long does it take to render a Bulb or 1-second+ image on a Pentax K100/110D? With my Canon, it takes about as long to render the image (noise-reduction) as it does to take the photo. Therefore, a 15-second photo ends up taking 30 seconds to complete. Also, does turning the noise-reduction for long exposures off change the render time at all? Thanks!

Aid Me in my Decision

Thank you everyone for your input! Hopefully, if everything goes as planned, I will be able to purchase a Pentax K100D by late February or early March. I could probably gain a little extra money by selling my Canon, but I think that I'll have times when I prefer to use a more compact camera, so I'm keeping it. Everyone wish me luck! I am really looking forward to entering into DSLR photography.

The only reason I wouldn't decide on the K100D is if the Nikon D50 becomes substantially cheaper than the K100D, but there are features on the Pentax that I like a lot more than the Nikon.

Thanks again, everyone, and I look forward to reading about your experiences with your Pentax and seeing your photos over the coming months.

Aid Me in my Decision

I've been wanting - for a while now - to purchase my first DSLR. A couple of years ago, I happened upon an old (circa 1972) Canon EX AUTO SLR and ended up tinkering with it until I figured out what all of those manual controls really did. I instantly fell in love with the freedom to control precisely how the camera took the photo.

Recently (within the past few weeks), I received a Canon A540 digital camera. I was really trying hard to find a DSLR that fit my budget, but I failed in that venture. Now, in hindsight, I feel that I should've held out until I could afford a DSLR.

At that time, I hadn't read about any of the Pentax DSLRs. I'm very interested in the K110D (or the K100D if I can squeeze the extra dollars) right now, because of its price, the flexibility of the controls, and the great reviews and image quality. Right now, I'm not convinced that I should shell out more money so soon after buying a relatively customizable digital camera on something that may not benefit me much. I've read some of WMBP's blog articles on his viewpoint of the differences and strong points of digital cameras and DSLRs. I'd like some input from those of you who have been in a similar situation and own a Pentax DSLR.

Here are some things that I feel are lacking in my current situation:

1) One of my favorite types of photography is night/astrophotography. With my current camera, I am limited to a maximum of 15 seconds exposure time. This does 'okay' for some basic shots, but it's not nearly enough to completely satisfy me.

2) Indoor photography without a bright, annoying flash all the time. High ISO settings on my small digital camera produce very noisy results.

3) Future expansion. When my budget allows, I would like to expand the 'possibilities' of my camera. There are some attachments available for the A540, but they are very limited, and often produce less-than-average quality results.

4) The feel. I love the way an SLR feels; it makes me much more comfortable in using it. I've used a more recent model Konica-Minolta SLR (which is larger than my Canon EX AUTO), and the size and shape made for a very comfortable shooting experience.

Tell me your thoughts, please!
