Struggling with autofocus adjustments

Unfortunately, I do not have the answers to your questions, but if I were you the problems wouldn't detract me from getting another lens.

Larger distances mean larger DOF, so I'd calibrate the lenses for distances roughly equalling 20-25 x the focal length (or closer if you use the lenses for close focusing often). Such a calibration should make sure that the subject is within the DOF most of the time.

Changing the camera might help, having the lenses calibrated by the manufacture might also help, but I cannot make any promises.

I think it would be better to set the lens to infinity and/or MFD and then see if engaging AF will produce the interference pattern again. It won't be the case a 100% of the attempts but you should use a compensation that gets you there most often.

On a K-5, which has the colour temperature sensor, artificial lighting should not impact on focus accuracy.

A lens issue seems unlikely.

Maybe your K-5's has a hardware problem but it may be worth waiting for the next firmware update. It is known that the K-5 has trouble to reach optimal focus in low Tungsten light. Maybe your issue is related. If the next firmware update addresses the known problem, maybe your problem will be gone as well.

Sorry about the mistake. Didn't notice the copy/paste error :(

Updated w/ the correct links, hope DA35/2.4 would look slightly better at F4 now ;)

Thanks for pointing this out.

Please accept my appologies in advance for the following,

it amazes me to keep reading this trash

Yes canon and nikon may be financially larger companies, and you can go with them and perhaps feel more secure that the company will exist, but that has nothing to do with protecting your investment and insuring that what you purchase now will be useable in 5 years time, Just look back at history.

Canon has obsoleted their lens mount twice, and in both cases offered no backward compatability or adaptors for those lenses, onto the new bodies

Nikon made a minor change in the early days and this required grinding away part of the aperture ring to fit their first lenses on newer slrs. Now, when you look at their DSLR line up, only some bodies carry screw drive to use older AF lenses (entry level models cant) and only the top of the line bodies can meter with manual lenses.

so yes the companies are still around but that did not do a bit of good for millions of consumers that bought their gear in the past.

Now look at Pentax. You can mount screw mount lenses with an adaptor, all cameras can meter with both these screw mount lenses and with manual aperture K mounts, all cameras today can work with every AF lens ever made.

In the long run people have been better off than canon and nikon owners by picking pentax.

Tell me where is the risk here, I don't see it

This would result in the death of Pentax... we need these bodies to sell well so that the lens line can grow.

What do you want to "revolutionize" the market? Seriously people. We point the camera, meter, and shoot. This is OLD TECHNOLOGY. Image sensitivity is far beyond film technology. We have shake reduction. Instant review.... the ability to take 500 pictures on a card the cost of developing 2 rolls of film. The list goes on and on. And the major complaint, autofocus, has apparently been improved upon.

I just don't understand. I know people taking wonderful photographs with 4 year old Canon Rebels which look like Game Boy's compared to this new Pentax.
