K-1 + Samyang 135mm F2.0 Aperture read issue
Posted By polaco

Thanks all for the response,
Is a bit weird, when i mounted the lens in my K3II I noticed it was NOT able to fully lock in the mount.
I moved the aperture ring to F2 and it was able to lock. Then i moved the aperture ring back to "A" and it started displaying the correct aperture.
I also tested it in K-1 and aperture displays correctly.
I tried to revert it to previous condition and force the issue to happen again but so far havent been able to reproduce it.
For sure must be related to the contact pins.

thanks a lot for all the detailed and educative responses.

K-1 + Samyang 135mm F2.0 Aperture read issue

Hi,

I have got my Samyang 135mm f2.0 when i mount it with lens set in A mode the K-1 displays a max aperture of F4.0 and a min aperture of F45, it seems like is reading aperture incorrectly as the lens max is F2.0 and min is F22.
Also tested in M mode, the exposure is the same if i use the lens in A mode at F4 that if i set the lens aperture to F2.

Any ideas?

thanks!

PS1: i tested the lens in my K3II and shows the same issue.
PS2: it seems an issue with the aperture displayed, however at F4, the lens is wide open. So... it seems the real issue is to affect the exif data.

K-1 Playback button / function has stopped working

I'm having the same issue with mine. It started by not responding at times, and now it is not responding at all.
I would hate to send the camera to repair just for this. I would love if any other button could be re mapped to perform playback, but so far, no luck.

so you created the jpg in camera? on the K3II i always used DCU5 to trasnsform the pixelshift shot into a tiff and then work on it on ps or lr, as in my experience those softwares doesn't process pixel shifted shots accordingly.

Resurrecting Pentax firmware hacking

is there a way to modify K3II firmware, I would like to enable dialing the astrotracer magnetic declination compensation manually, should be quite simple.
My main programming knowledge is by far java, however i could catch up with c, and c++ ( havenīt used them in 10 years ).
So first i would need to decompile the K3II firmware, which i don't know which tool to use.
Then editing, if possible and then compiling it again.
In my mind it doesn't seem to be complicated, for sure the camera is maintaining some kind of magnetic declination compensation internally so the new functionallity would just need to allow me to change that value, that's it.
An alternative would be to make the camera to read that value from the sd file.
Ideas?

ps: I have downloaded https://github.com/i-am-shodan/PentaxFirmwareTool
I compiled it and tried it to decrypt the K3II firmware that is in the zip provided by pentax, however the process fails as the XOR.key provided in PentaxFirmwareTool does not match firmware size.
I wonder were did they got that xor.key and how could i get the one for k3II. If the non encrypted version is available then calculating the xor file would be easy, providing they are still using same xor approach.
pps: well after reading a bit, it seems efforts on hacking pentax firmware has been abandoned, and if it is pure assembly i guess i would be dead.

for bulb mode i would like to have the same option that in astrotracer, to be able to dial the exposure time. that is inconsisten astrotracer and bulb both should allow this and not only astrotracer mode.

I own the K3II... so
no higher res needed so current MP shall be fine, nor flash either.

better iso performance would be great
better afc would be welcome
wifi/bluethoot/nfc whatever support would be nice
tilting screen as K1 would rock!
please keep the astrotracer and gps!
more focus points would be welcome too
any improvement on SR and pixel shift would be welcome
automatic lens calibration?

however the thing i would prefer most is that Tamron and Sigma start doing K mount lens again!

great shots! I was pretty impressed about this lens ( the sigma 18-35 f1.8 ) until i read in many reviews it had lots of autofocus issues when using the viewfinder.
Have you experienced such issues in your K3?

ps:sorry I have seen you have already posted your experiences in the upper responses to this thread, thanks for sharing

but... do you think moon shots are suitable for pixelshift? honestly i dont think so as moon moves when the shots are being taken. I have also tried it but i got sharper and better results with single shots... just a thought...

Hell yeah!!! :D
At one moment I also thought it could be a south pole thing but then it sounded a bit weir to me so i discarded that possibility.
But then being two with the same problem makes me re think on that again... A southies problem maybe?
I think i shall have mentioned that in the incident i reported to pentax but i did not.
At this moment, after so many calibration attempts... makes me want to kill the Japanese guy in the calibration video.

Hi Tjompen,

Sorry I don't have another K3II to test, in fact I'm pretty sure mine might be the only one in all my country ( Argentina ).
I did another pentax yoga session today like 45 minutes and still never got a success, not even once.

Sandy, i know Astrotracer is not for moon shots, thanks.

I guess i will do more tests tomorrow just to give it a last chance.

something i have noticed after trying to see some hidden detail is that in the video, when the japanese guy turns a bit and does the second calibration... at that point the camera is already displaying the OK message. At least it looks like for me.
well i have no cell phone with me, not near a car, i have a garlic hanging in my neck and holy water in a cup, a crucifix in my chest, a rabbit leg in my pocket and a 4 leaf clover in the other... still nothing. Maybe I need to do some prays to St Pentax.

Hi!

I am impressed about the difference.
Does anyone knows if Ligthroom CC read pixelshift shots properly?
I read it has added compatibility, but I don't know exactly what that means...

thanks!

Hi!

For "precise calibration" generally I do yaw, pitch, roll a few times. Then I change my orientation a bit and again. Then I change my orientation again and same until I get the "fail" message.

For "calibration" I do yaw, pitch, roll then i turn myself a bit i do yaw and the "success" message appears.

Honestly, I dont know what else to do.

thanks,
Fede.

Hi, thanks for the tips.
Today I tried again, considering the tips.
So before starting my daily Pentax Yoga movements I also checked that the camera was leveled with the in camera level.
I tried the precise calibration like 15 more times ( i count the times from the moment i start the calibration until the calibration failed message appears).
I did as the guy in the video, even with more precise movements trying to keep the camera in the axis being rotated each time, tried changing my orientation, and nothing.
So far this is some kind of evil Yoga that instead of relaxing generates loads of anger in me and frustration each time the calibration fails. A test to ones patient and perseverance.
This is not what i would call a nice user experience, not at all so far. :(

Today i went to a field, far away from the city. No structures or houses in 200meters around.
All the attempts to do the precise calibration failed, I tried like 20 times.
In contrast each single time i did the regular calibration succeeded at once.
I still refuse to believe this is a hardware issue, maybe is more related to firmware, and im not in a region affected by volcanoes or nothing like that, not even mountains.
Still ASTROTRACER seems to work, maybe is not working as accurate as it could be?
I'm a bit pissed off about this, is a great feature.
If someone has an advice please let me know.

thanks you!

ps: I sent an incident report through that web form available at pentax web, to my surprise, K3II was not even listed between the products just the K3...

I am also having a hard time doing the precise calibration.
I went to an open field, it might have 40 by 40 meters square. I guess is open enough. No large buildings nearby just small houses.
The calibration runs perfectly smooth. However the precise calibration never succeeds.
I really refuse to believe that the camera has a fault. It would be great if the camera could tell which axis calibration failed or something like that.
So one could try to improve on it or i dont know some more useful message than just "failed".
Maybe even they could create a wizard that calibrates each axis independently and that displays some kind of graphical hint related to the movement.
Having this in a bios update would be nice. Looks like Pentax left the K3II in oblivion, there is not even a video regarding precise calibration just an old one about the external gps calibration.
K3II is an incredible camera, it deserves more attention.
Today i will go to an open field outside the city and try precise calibration again by 50th time.
