Just wanted to update this thread in case someone else encountered the same issue.

After buying a spanner and successfully removing the rear element of the lens, I learned that it was backward - after reversing and trying it out again, everything proved to be normal - lens focused as it should.

Following this, came the arduous task of reassembling the lens without dust and blemishes - which turns out to be an arduous task, as cleaning and assembling a lens without dust and smudges is most difficult to do without specialty cleaning wipes - as conventional methods do not work well - at least not in my own experience.

In addition to this, this lens also had what I'd consider, severe yellowing, and to the point of affecting image quality, and so I decided to try a UV treatment.
I also learned that this was only applicable to the rear element stack, and so I took advantage of the lens being apart to place each individual element on a UV lamp, as this would spare the lens from excessive heat and potentially damaging something in the process - plus it was much easier to construct a shroud and holder out of carboard and aluminum foil for the individual lens elements than with the entire lens itself.

With that said, I did the deed using the following UV lamp; "Everbeam 395nm 10W UV LED Black Light" - which I purchased on Amazon for 19.99 CAD
All in all, the deyellowing process took aprox 3 days per element, resulting in crystal clear elements afterward - night and day difference and very satisfying to do imo.

Well that's about all there is to report on this - all in all, an eBay seller tried to rip me off, and somehow managed to get away with my money on both eBay and Paypal - luckily, my CC company was able to get me the money back, though I had to invest in a drive spanner, lens ring removal tool and UV light, which totaled aprox. 160 CAD with shipping and fees, as well as the money lost to customs due to not returning the item for a refund - no physical return = no duty and customs refund...

Having said all that, and on a brighter note, I did however, end-up with a moderately good 105/2.4 67 lens, and so I guess it's not all bad news :)

- hope this helps someone somewhere and thanks for the help

Alright thanks everyone - as it turns out, the seller removed the battery and the mirror would stay in the up position - after adding a battery, everything worked as it normally should :)

Thanks again for the ideas and suggestions
Next up, shooting a few rolls :)

Yes, I read about that - it was the first thing I checked upon receiving the camera, no other camera has had me on pins and needles like this - hope its worth it

DPR Article on Pixel Shift

The funny about developing technologies such as this is that it comes with what I'd call an adjustment period. That is to say that while DPReview may seem biased at this point in time, I'd add that we can trace back the development of their stance as they came to understand the technology and it's limitations. Which I believe could be likened to a learning process. In short, when DPReview tested this on the K-3 and eventually the K-1, it becomes apparent that the reviewer was not happy with the results. To which I'd add, they tried taking various images in various conditions with limited success. Not based on the camera of course, but more specifically, on part of the users and their expectations. And so the response came across negatively as the reviewer was left wanting more(or less) ie, more benefits and less artifacts

Fast forward up until today and the reviewer in question now has established an experience to work with. Granted, the a7r III is nowhere near as sophisticated as the K-1, in where the reviewer didn't know what to look for. And guess what... we can clearly see that experience put to use in his latest review. ie, the reviewer set-up his test shots to maximize on the limitations of the technology(stills) as he then go-on to compare the results against his own past experiences.

Which leads me to contemplate the following;
Is it fair? Hardly
Is it common? Most definitely

Having said all that, my take on this is that Pixel Shift technology is here to stay and that Pentax has the upper hand. And while it may feel as though the K-1 got a bum-wrap as the control. It remains that the next iteration to come-out of Pentax's doors will go unnoticed - this only works once

Supremacy of MF (Manual Focus) shots- how many of us still doing MF?

I entered into MF shooting with Pentax(k100s) and stayed on k-mount up-until the K-5 IIs. After which, I decided to try a Sony SLT FF system, and eventually mirrorless, which is where my MF addiction really took hold, with focus peeking and ability to mount pretty much any lens imaginable.

With that said, and today, my MF addiction has lead me to medium format, to which I'd add, I' would really like to try my hand at large format, if not only to say that I've experienced it - but have not had much luck finding a viable path toward a working kit :/

All that to say that I'm still very much going MF personally and won't likely see that changing anytime soon. - my shooting choice is mainly landscape, though I do a bit of portraiture as well

Sony A9: is there still a future for DSLRs, and Pentax mirrorless suggestion

While I think everyone would agree that more DR is better, the fact remains that we've shot great landscapes long before having 15 stops of DR at our disposition. And so I'm really not sure how significant these types of arguments can be beyond that a minimum requirement must be met before concluding that a particular sensor would not be sufficient with any significance. ie(and as previously mentioned), I don't think many people will conclude that the K-5 is any less of a camera than it was the day it was launched since the K-1 has come onto the scene.

Nothing wrong with that, though I don't think these types of experiences will make much of an impact on the usefulness of a particular camera. ie, one could just as well conclude that they could produce the very same images with as little as 10 or 12 stops of DR. To which I'd add, would raise issue with whether such instances are more about convenience than necessity type thing.

I shoot mainly landscapes personally. With that said, I'd also add that while I've shot these with the; K200D, K20D, K5, a99 the a7r II and more recently Medium Format, that I think it's outstanding there has been very little(if any) changes in the final quality of the images aside from resolution between each of these systems in print. - different workflow, and processing, but, in the end, the results are so closely similar that it feels as though the advancements between these systems are more of a convenience than a hindrance.

That may be due to misinterpretation. ie, in most cases, when people make statements drawn from a personal perspective, this usually implies that personal opinions are being made. With that said, I personally think it's best to avoid speaking for others in such cases as this can easily lead into invalid arguments(or logical fallacies).

---------- Post added 06-16-17 at 05:44 PM ----------

I don't do sports personally and so I can't really relate, though I'm not entirely sold on the wildlife aspect of it however. ie, I've had very good success with shooting 5fps in doing so, and would question whether a 20fps system would make a difference. - but that's just me

Needless to say, I won't be buying an a9 anytime soon, though I'm wondering if Sony isn't trying to make a massive profits from an otherwise lower costing unit by matching the competition. Of which, I suspect we're going to see when they release the Sony a7 III, which is apparently built around the a9 sensor and circuitry - will be interesting to see how that plays out.

See: what is low key photography

With that said, here are a few examples of such shooting styles to help you get up to speed on things;

With that said, and perhaps a better way for you to come to terms with this would be to consider the high-key method, which most often implies contrasting subjects against what looks like a blown out ambient (from a technical stand-point). Though it remains that these techniques(high /low key) have been widely used and recognized within the photography industry for a very long time.

With respect to individual monitor profiling and the likes, it's best to take measures to properly identify such things before drawing conclusions. One good example of this is when 30bit displays came into the scene, so many photographers(myself included) came to see just how much of the gamut we were missing. And so, I'd recommend taking the safe route when others do not share in the same conclusions insofar as on screen exposure clipping is concerned. To which I'd add, and with respect to the image in question, it would appear that the photographer processed the image with highlights in mind as the only apparent blowouts that were coming-up on my screen are on a small portion of the right sock. Whereas the face and fabric etc. are all showing color information (on my own screen that is)

That's correct. And so this is more a matter of coming to terms with photo processing(styles) than of proper technique. Though I can see where someone might feel this way given the amount of shooters out there who tend toward technical conformance's rather than artistry. ie, landscape photography for example will tend toward the technical side

Whatever the case, and as I'm sure you can appreciate, the good news is that there's always more to learn in the wonderful world of photography :)

- hope this helps

I'm sorry to hear that.

I don't think so, and apparently hundreds of other people share in the same view. In my view, the image is a well executed blend of framing, composition and processing. With that said, have you accounted for the effects of image compression from the Facebook upload system?

To which I'd add, if we can establish that the a9 doesn't suffer from such things as shadow blotchyness, then why conclude this to be anything more than a part of the conversion process? ie, I don't think many people will look at the grain on this image to determine IQ.

We are discussing whether or not the choice of processing is warranted.
To which I'd add, it would appear that your counterargument is an appeal to authority - see: appeal to authority

Prove it :)

That would be a strawman, as I recall, the issue in question was whether or not the a9 could keep-up with the competition.

At this stage, I'm trying to figure out why you're refusing to acknowledge that the photographer chose to process the image as a low key image. And perhaps more to the point, why you'd refuse that the highlights are not blown in the image based on what you're eyes and screen are telling you, as opposed to what others are telling you. Which seems like a very odd position for a photography teacher to uphold or maintain under the circumstances.

Makes me wonder how this could even be possible...

Click here to see actual image IQ

Needless to say, I'm thinking we've long passed the excellent image quality stages with most modern digital sensors, which is likely why so many people seem lulled into a false sense of performance advantages based on specs. ie, I still think the K200D takes amazing images, let alone a K-5 II/s. To which I'd add, how does one justify the K-1 being better?

And where does one draw the line between needs and conveniences in cases such as these?
Didn't we see and hear these very same arguments when film was slated to be overtaken with digital?
ie, who can honestly say they need 36mp of resolution and 15 stops of DR?

And so the issue I see with such styles of arguments is where they seem to come up under guise of personal sensitivities rather than from legitimate contentions.

Need vs convenience; Air conditioning, Cruise control, Most every car on the road(overloaded with none essential features etc), LCD screens, multi-core processors, smart phones, touch screens and so-on, and so-forth... - the list seems endless

Have you survived the Film vs Digital succession by chance?
I'd say it was far worst. The entire affair dragged out for around 10 years until the inevitable took hold, and where only a few diehards were left standing - of which most likely continue to exist today :p

Thing of it is, change is difficult and the old mirror vs mirrorless will not doubt be difficult for alot of people. Though overall, I'd say it isn't that bad.

As for Pentax, I'm sure they'll be fine. They're an innovative company and have already shown their hand with mirrorless systems.
My guess is that they'll maintain their disposition by developing sure-footed tech. while the competition does all the heavy lifting ;)

PS. I too think mirrorless is the inevitable future of digital photography along with EVF and electronic shutter.
Though I also think these technologies must undergo the necessary development cycles before taking hold, in much the same way that digital audio took over the analog market

Needless to say, with so many DSLR photographers reviewing and commenting on this, one would think that someone would have provided indications that the tech is not up to the task. Though it would seem that this isn't the case at all, as all of the reviewers seem to be in agreement that Sony's latest EVF iteration is indeed a very good solution.

Therefore and with that being said, and while it remains that the a9 may still be a preorder item, I'm thinking it would qualify for today, in terms of the state of the latest in EVF technology.

I don't think it's all that strange actually given the impact that the mirrorless /DSLR transition is having on the camera industry. And so I'm thinking this isn't the only alternate forum having such types of discussions at this time.

I have nothing but praise for Sony who clearly listened to what the people were asking for with this particular camera.
While the a9 definitely caters to the professional shooter, I think it makes an excellent example of how the technology will inevitably deprecate the DSLR industry.

That said, can't wait to see what's next in terms of high resolution solutions. To which I'd add, I only pray is competitively priced though, otherwise we may see a pricing divide form between the mirrorless and conventional DSLR's until manufacturing costs come down. Which won't likely work in Sony's favor given the price that comes with innovation these days.
