The main use of high sync speed is to shoot with off camera flash in bright sunlight. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to use the weak on-board flash as a trigger in such situations. It's a shame that they have limited the hot shoe in such a way, the Q would be an excellent camera for strobist work otherwise, more flexible than the fixed lens Fujifilm x100s and extremely compact.

Nice article, Adam, looks promising! Could you check if the Q7 also only allows flash sync at 1/250s from the hotshoe? With the leaf shutter lenses, this would be amazing for using flash with higher shutter speeds. I find it very strange that Pentax has crippled the camera this way. Just look at the popularity of the Fuji X100s in the strobist community.

Thanks, very pleased with the pictures! Now I just have to decide on a new normal zoom and new flash triggers, I have some thinking to do.

Thanks :) Yeah, of course it's all my fault, I'm just glad the camera didn't hit him in the head when it all came crashing down!

However, a few seconds after taking this shot,
the little brat manages to topple over my tripod while I'm adjusting the light, resulting in this,
In addition, the wireless flash trigger and the focusing screen on my camera broke...
Too bad he's so cute, it's hard to stay mad at him :)

Thank you for the replies. As far as I know, the lens has not been dropped, but I have small children in the house, so you never know. I cannot see any damage/distortion on the flange, so if it's there it must be very minor. I guess I'll just live with it, and if the issue becomes worse, I'll contact a repair shop.

Hello,
Recently, my FA50mm has become very difficult to mount, I have to apply a lot of force. This happens on all my cameras, and all my other lenses are smooth. Has anyone else has this problem? I guess a solution involves WD40, but I'm a bit hesitant to try it.

You end up with a different angle of view, not focal length, but that's another discussion. The point is that you also end up with a different depth of field. You WILL get a DOF similar to f/11 on full frame using f/1.9 on the Q, there's just no way around it (except for the post-processing bokeh filter part).
Here's a helpful link to understand this: Equivalence - f/2 = f/2 = f/2 |

That's ISO3200 though! Not many years ago, top DSLRs only went to 1600. You just can't expect this to be a low light monster.
What I would love to see for the Q is an ultra wide angle lens. Most compacts only go to 28mm on the wide end, a few to 24. It would be nice to have a tiny camera to bring for longer hikes. UWA lenses could be made extremely small, just look at the 9-18mm for m4/3.

How does that matter? Aperture is still aperture, you still have to apply the crop factor. Maybe what you say will allow faster lenses to be made, like f/0.95, but that would still only give you about f/5.6 in terms of depth-of-field (on full frame).

About the bokeh filter, do a search for Sony defocus, it is a similar feature they have in some of their compacts. It is decent, but there is just no way to get that nice, 3D look with graduation from in-focus to out-of-focus areas by post processing a 2D image.

Remember that due to the crop factor, the 8.5mm f/1.9 behaves roughly like 50mm f/11 on full frame in terms of DOF. Therefore, you will struggle to get nice bokeh with this camera.

Same here, after service the front focus was significantly improved, but still an issue at wide apertures.

Thanks, I've tried asking several of the local shops with no luck. Not sure if the color is worth an extra $100!

For groups of 4 you are much better off using two lights, I would go for two largish umbrellas. For just one person, I have had good results with a 24" softbox. It is light, portable and easy to set up for location photography. Maybe not ideal for supersoft full-length portraits, but it gets the job done.

I have been very happy with my Canon iP4700, I think the newest is iP4850. The B&W output is decent but not perfect, but the color output is great. I use Canon Pro II paper.

I also enjoy using the K-r despite the front focus issue, most of the time it's easy to work around it. It will be interesting to see the results of this poll. However, it is no way to be sure if people responding "yes" actually have the issue or vice versa.

It would definitely be useful if those with functioning K-rs posted their test results, for one thing it would help turn around the negative vibe the K-r forum has had since day one. I admit it is difficult to reach a conclusion, though, due to different test methods, different lighting and different lenses being used. But just simple testing comparing live-view focus to phase-detect focus in various lighting conditions would be nice. It's just that all the K-rs I've held (about 4 or 5) have had the issue, and recent statements from Pentax seem to indicate that it's a fundamental hardware flaw. I don't know quite what to believe anymore.
No, you didn't say unusable, but you did say "down right horrible", if that means usable to you then maybe we have different standards :)

Would you mind posting test shots to confirm this? If I'm convinced that properly focusing K-rs exist, I will go through the trouble of sending it in for repair, getting it back without any change, sending it in again, getting in back, sedning it in and THEN maybe finally getting a replacement...:)
BTW, my FA 50mm is more than usable wide open when properly focused.

No. An old 50mm lens is the same as a new 50mm lens. However, the field of view of a 85mm lens on a film camera is similar to a 50mm lens on a digital Pentax camera.
So it depends on what you want, do you want do replicate the look of a film camera with a 85mm lens? If so, a 50mm lens is an excellent option.

Congrats on the purchase! However, you might be fooled by the relatively slow aperture of the kit lenses. With the kit lens, the FF is mostly not an issue for me either. But with a faster lens, such as the FA 50mm f1.4, it's VERY noticable. It's worth doing a controlled test, and post the results here, please. I would love to see if perfectly focusing K-r's actually exist, since several tests here and statements from Pentax suggest otherwise.
