Pentax Auto 110 lenses for the Q

I'm still experimenting. The 18mm with ~f/4 aperture disc is pretty good. Some softness at the edges, but a minor crop takes care of that and still gives a much wider FOV than the Q. The 50 is giving me a lot of CA near the edges, but playing around with home-made hoods might improve matters.

I found D-mount also covers the image circle on the Q, and picked up a very nice all metal Sankyo 38mm f/1.4 at a reasonable price. It's a great indoor portrait lens, but also gets significant CA in stronger light.

Older M4/3 bodies can be had at very reasonable prices now. Cheaper than a Q. The good lenses are pricier. I got the GX1 for free buying a two lens kit and selling the lenses. I might sell that too and look out for an OMD E-M10 II. I want the 5 axis IBIS.

Looking forward to the 70 with (and without please) the TC.

I've been lucky. The fit is good with my adaptors (no-name on the Q and a Pixco on my PanyGX1). The damping on the lenses is ok too. A bit stiff on my 24, I might make a larger diameter barrel for it.

I took this pic of the GX1 and 50mm with the Q and the 18mm

Thanks for posting the original literature! Interesting that the blurb makes no mention of the 70mm lens. But that may have been introduced later in the system's life? Obviously there's little point in attaching the 24mm if you own the 50mm, which only gains 15mm over the 70mm lens anyway. Has anyone tried the TC on the 70? Another question: does the larger Q7/QS1 sensor cope with f/8 any better than the Q/Q10? And yet another question: given the wider FOV of the larger sensor, how much would you gain in IQ after you've cropped in anyway?

Thanks for checking. Looking at the photos, it looks like the TC has an aperture stop built into it. Which makes sense, since the camera's built-in diaphragm would end up a long way behind the rear element otherwise and would likely introduce coma.

I'll have to wait for one to show up nearer home. That copy would double in price by the time I got it due to shipping and customs charges.

I wish I did. I haven't been able to find one at a reasonable price. I have got a pan focus 18mm as well as 24mm lenses though. I'm liking the pan focus. It makes a nice portrait lens on the Q. Slightly soft, but very easy to use for snap shots and stealthy candid street shots.

Do you know where I might find a teleconverter?

I'm impressed by the 50mm Pentax 110 lens' performance on the Q. Here's a 100% crop with a ~f/4 aperture disc fitted. I've run the OOC .jpg through Irfan View's auto colour adjustment and a slight sharpening. The sky colour is realistic; it's a heavily overcast day here.

I'm new to this excellent and entertaining thread, so forgive me if this has already been posted. It's an excellent explanation of why it would have been easier to land on the moon than fake the footage of the event.

I had that K30 16MP SONY sensor in a Ricoh GXR 28-84 Lensor unit a few years ago, and very nice it is too. The less densely packed 12MP K-r sensor is good at high ISO work for this price, and the K-r body weighs quite a bit less than the later full pentaprism models too.

I just won a K-r + kit lens on ebay for a very good price. It was advertised as "For parts or not working", because:
"When turn on flickering noise, would be easy to fix, other than that works fine and takes amazing photos.".

Fingers crossed the seller just didn't know what sensor shake dust removal is. Apparently the K-r is quite vigorous in it's application...

My MX1 first impressions

I can see how people become attached to the MX1. It has a feeling of solidity and permanence to it. I got the same feeling from my Ricoh GXR kit.
The busted X10 arrived, and the lens is well and truly jammed, so it looks like the MX1 viewfinder project will go ahead. Having looked at the way the MX1 lens zooms by shortening first and then lengthening, I doubt I'll be able to make the viewfinder zoom in sync with the lens through the full range. There's no way I'm going inside the MX1 to drive it straight off the lens motor either. The idea needs several coats of looking at.

Another small note on handling. Some people were criticising the tilting LCD, saying it's ugly because it juts out from the back of the camera in the folded position. I'm finding that useful, because when the tip of my thumb registers against the edge of the LCD, the control buttons and dial fall nicely under the pad of my thumb so I can find and press them easily without having to take my eyes off the scene I'm composing.

I was wondering what alternative people who found the lack of viewfinder a deal breaker chose. Fuji X20? Olympus Stylus 1?

A long time ago I served a four year apprenticeship as a toolmaker. There's another premium compact camera with the same focal length range, which has a zooming optical viewfinder; the Fujifilm X10. There was one on the 'bay with a lens "stuck in the off position". I won it for a few pounds. If I can't fix the lens, I'm going to pull the viewfinder out of it and have a close look at how it is mechanically coupled to the lens. It might be possible to graft it onto the MX1 without unscrewing the case if I can use the lens travel as my motive power.

David: Sorry to hear about the leg, all good now I hope. Now's the time to pick up another MX1, I was amazed how low the price was for this underappreciated camera. I have a cunning plan concerning a viewfinder. More on that soon.

Spodeworld: Great lighting, and nteresting architecture, where's the location?

I'm liking this camera. It encourages experimentation. The menus are very 'Q' like, so that's familiar. This is a nice lens with a useful zoom range. The strong HDR mode has a 'processed' look about it, but it certainly turns a boring hazy shot to horizon more interesting!

Here are a few I took while I was out on my strollabout.

Sage advice. Note to self: Don't attempt 'street' shots in HDR mode when the subject is on the move .

Well, the MX1 I won on the 'bay for a keen price just showed up. It has an image count of 0241 on it. :D

Very clean, very nice. I like the feel of it to hold. I have big hands and there's room to manipulate the buttons. As others have noted, the strap lug position means the camera tilts upwards when hanging on the strap. It might look naff, but it could be regarded as a feature. It protects the LCD from rubbing up against shirt buttons. No bad thing.

I've added a few images. One of the camera itself. Then a lowish light test in my front room. Colours seem faithful, and the image is reasonably noise free. The 100% crop shows nice details and even falloff from highlights.

So far so good. Now I'll go for a wander on this sunny summer day and see what I can find.

Back later...

Ricoh GR marked as Discontinued in Adorama

Morning all, longtime lurker and lens database user here.

I got tired of waiting for Ricoh to produce a successor to the GX200, and jealous of the GR owners prime IQ, so I bought a GXR with A10 24-72 and A12 28mm units. Best of both worlds?

Not quite. The A10 has too much NR going on to try to squash the noisy chroma aberrations of the old 1/1.7" CCD, and the setup with 28mm on is a lot bigger and heavier than a pocketable GR. I can live with the latter, but I do miss the GX200's zoom-in-a-pocket neatness.

As a current compromise, I've just bought an MX-1 of the 'bay, hopefully arriving in the post today. My Q will probably see less use now, mainly for birding trips with my nice sharp Tokina 135mm lens.

Hi everyone,
I've had a Pentax Q for a while. My missus bougt a Q7 and I was so jealous of the image quality she gets that I had to buy an MX1 to compete with. Hopefully it's in the post to me today. I've used old Pentax M lenses on the Q that I had left over from film SLR days (I have an ancient Ricoh XR), so I've used the forum lens database before.

I'm an eclectic photographer, snapping anything I like the look of, from landscape to wildlife to streetlife. And industrial archaeology - I like rust. And shiny things too...

See you on the forum.

Cheers

Rog
