We were recently on a long West Coast vacation, and I was lucky enough to capture this pic while we were in Sequoia National Park. Keep in mind that I am a relative newbie that rarely takes the camera off auto at this point, so be gentle :D. Also the pic has zero post-processing since I just started a trial of Lightroom and Photoshop tonight and have no idea what I am doing yet. Additionally, it has not been cropped and I just relied on the big ol' Sigma 150-500 for some reach.
Thanks

Wow. Thanks for all the suggestions.
I was looking at the Case Logic Medium bag before this post and it's nice to see it recommended by a couple of people. Time to go shopping and see if I can find a few of these options in person.

I am looking for a small bag, probably holster style, to carry my K-50 with the 18-135 along with another lens (or maybe 2). The other likely lenses would be my 50mm and 100mm macro.
90% of the time I will carry my full backpack but would like the option of only carrying a few of my smaller lenses in a comfortable convenient bag for part of our vacation.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Ugh. If I thought this could get here before we leave on vacation in a week (without absurd shipping costs), I would get it for my wife to use on the trip.

It's a species of plume moth, and a rather stunning one at that.

If you are going to be toting it around while rock climbing you might also want to take the K3's larger size and weight into consideration.
I would get the K50 and spend the extra $400 on more glass, but my skills are a long way from pushing the K50's limits so YMMV.

I was about to order a Marumi Super DHG CPL in 62mm for my Pentax 18-135 as my first polarizing filter with a step-up ring to let me use it on my Pentax D-FA 100mm Macro as well. But now I'm wondering if I shouldn't get the 86mm filter to use on my Sigma 150-500 with another step-up ring for the 18-135.
I was primarily getting the CPL because we are visiting the Grand Canyon and Yosemite on our trip. But we will be taking two whale watching trips as well. I will be using the 18-135 on the whale watching trip if the weather is iffy but intend to break out Sigma at first opportunity.
So, should I spend the extra money for the bigger filter?
And secondly, would a CPL be more trouble than it is worth while whale watching?

The black bundle is cheaper at B&H and Adorama, but that's a good price for the less common blue color.

Nice pics. We will be there in 2.5 weeks.
Any suggestions on lens choice? Filters? Or anything else?

Wow, that was a brief sale. I have my order confirmation for the K-50 with the 18-135 at the sale price with a bunch of accessories. Now I'm waiting on notice that it shipped so I can send the one from B&H back to them.

Wow, a lot of good advice.
Seems like the 15 is a popular recommendation. I'll take a look at my options and might rent a couple to see which one to buy later to add to my kit.
I would be content with what I have for most of the trip including the Grand Canyon, but I think I will really need the wide angle at Sequoia and Yosemite (to a lesser extent).
I might try a pano or two at the GC with the 100mm as my best optical quality lens. And the 18-135 will probably get a massive amount of use. One of the whale watching trips in in a small RHIB so the weather sealing will be a big plus.
Can't wait for this trip, and I hope my limited skills at least get me a few great pics.

Are there better telephoto options? Absolutely.
Can they be had for $800? Absolutely not.
The lens is a good value for the money IMO if it is a range you need to add to your kit.

My family and I will be taking an 18-day trip to AZ and CA in a few weeks. I just bought a new K-50 with the 18-135mm lens so my budget is reduced to renting a lens or two for the trip rather than buying something new.
Here is what I am working with:
Bodies: K-50 and a k-x (gave it to my 11-year old for his first DSLR)
Lens: Pentax 18-55mm (k-x kit lens)
Pentax 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 WR
Pentax D FA 100mm Macro f/2.8
Sigma 150-500 f/5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM
Tamron 1.4 teleconverter
Quantaray 70-300 f/4-5.6 (my son will carry it with the k-x)
95% of my typical photos are wildlife or macros of my reef aquariums or insects (my son's passion). So as you can see, I have nothing on the wide angle side of things.
I was looking to add the Sigma 10-20mm (either version) for the trip, but should I be looking at other options or another lens in addition to the Sigma?
Our rough itinerary includes Sedona, Grand Canyon, Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Yosemite, Sequoia, Henry Cowell SP (Redwoods), Monterey including whale watching, Big Sur, and San Diego including whale watching and both zoos.
Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Except if you had actually bothered to read the post, you would have known that I was able to purchase to 150-500. But I guess that result wouldn't have suited the tone of your post.

I called Adorama in the faint hope that they might still honor the discount on the 50mm bundled with the K50 with the 18-135 and steal a customer from BH.
No such luck. Rep said the discounts were from a Pentax rebate that expired. Although I find it odd that Adorama had a manufacturer rebate that wasn't available to anyone else.

Well, that was a mistake.
I was looking at the K-50 with the 18-135 at Adorama since I could get the 50mm f1.8 for free with the purchase. Decided to think about it overnight. Oops. Just went to buy it and they no longer are offering the bundle prices on the additional lenses.
Ugh. Back to the drawing board.

Why don't you rent a different body or two and see which one you like? It's an extra expense but it gives you more certainty for your choice.
Lensrentals.com has 7 different Pentax bodies available including multiple versions of the K-3, and K-5, and they also have the KS-2.

I can tell you that March 23 was the day the last K-mount 150-500 disappeared from the top online photography stores.
I had been looking at this lens for a while, but always had other things to do with that much cash. Finally had a bunch of extra disposable income and started looking for the 150-500. I was surprised when Amazon was out of stock with no set date to get them back in stock. Adorama was out as well. When I checked BH I saw they had the non-OS version left. Or at least the title listed it non-OS while the description indicated that it did have stabilization. The listing even had a different Part No. from the OS version (which was sold out). Since the listing seemed contradictory I called BH and tried to figure out which lens they actually had. Once they looked at the listing neither of two reps could figure out which lens they actually had in stock. One of the reps said he would have the lens pulled and he would call me back. About 30 minutes later he called and said the lens was the OS version and it was the last one in stock. I bought it immediately and have been a happy camler ever since.
