Nikon V1 and J1: the new mirrorless cameras from Nikon

Your overall idea is right, but the numbers are not.

A FF sensor receives 2.3 times more light than APS-C (non-Canon). A APS-C (non-Canon) sensor receives 1.6 times more light than m43 (or 1.46 in case of Canon). Etc. I'm not sure what the sensor area for new Nikon is, but I think m43 is overall closer to APS-C than the new Nikon; I could be wrong.

Appears to be a complete fail. As big as m43, or even larger with the lenses, if m43 mounts pancakes. Smaller sensor than anything but the Q. Very slow lenses. Quite pricey.

Nikon must believe in their brand strength very much to think they can pull this off. Maybe they're right.

GXR is the worst case of forced obsolescence ever. Throw out good lenses because the sensor is outdated? Okay. At least with M- and K- mount MF modules it would have some place in the world.

The GXR is so hopeless that people don't even know its name and keep calling it GSX.

I'm sure Ricoh will release a (manual focus-only) K-module for GXR. That's like 99% certain even without asking.

That is completely false in case of Lenovo. They publish repair manuals online and sell parts at reasonable prices at their store, as do 3rd parties online. I replaced my broken LCD screen for 60 GBP and keyboard for 16 GBP - both new, and it took 30 mins for both as the devices are well designed, as opposed to Apple crap which look nice but aren't meant to be serviced, just replaced by the newest model. Hell even batteries aren't user swappable on iPhones, wtf.

Also in common is not having much market share :(.

That's extreme wishful thinking, I think they aren't giving it up.

That's also wishful thinking, the most it can do is probably 1/1.7''.

I think this is pretty bad news, as Ricoh doesn't really bring anything to the table for K-mount DSLRs, while with Ricoh Pentax will no longer develop a larger-sensored EVIL system as Ricoh already has the GXR.

Yes, not even Q comes close.

I wonder what that means for Pentax future mirror-less offerings. What are the odds they decide GXR + Q is enough and concentrate on these two bizzare systems, foregoing a APSC EVIL?

I also think there will be a lower-end Q, perhaps even for Christmas. As Eddie says, they might take away the metal body, the SR, the flash, the hotshoe, some of the manual controls. However, I think they might use the same lenses and sensor. And lower the price - perhaps even a lot depending on the sales.

And they also have room to issue a higher-end Q which would have WR and/or built-in or plug-on EVF, and possibly a slightly (not by much, 1/1.7'' perhaps) sensor, and a WR kit lens.

$700 was back when GF1 was fresh out; now I think it is only available used.

I meant the next Panasonic models (GH3 and whatever the real GF1 replacement is). I think G3 and GF3 may only have 25mm f/1.4 bundled "unofficially" (by resellers).

GF1 + 20mm kits used to be widely available. I don't remember for how much exactly, perhaps $700? I think one of the next Panasonics may come with the 25mm as a kit lens, but that will probably be towards August if not later.

True, except it adds $150 to adapter price and means the nice Chinese chaps supplying all the $15 m43 and NEX adapters cannot make them.

Then again you could get a EPL-1 with 14-42mm kit lens for $400 or a NEX-3 with the 16mm prime and invest the remaining $600 into a boatload of high quality used legacy lenses and adapters. They would be manual focus, but the Q toy lenses are all manual focus AND fixed aperture AND (I think) have plastic lens elements.

I'm just thinking that comparing a set of high quality most expensive m43 primes in price to a set of toy lenses covering a 1/2.3'' sensor is an unequal comparison.

So what's the second 2011 Pentax mirrorless?

It depends on the pockets.

My GF1 (larger than GF2/GF3/EPM-1) fits in my rain jacket pockets with 20mm and 9-18mm lenses attached fairly easily (and by extension with the Oly 14-42mm and 14mm lenses I don't own) and with the 14-45mm lens attached just barely.

That's actually very useful when it rains, as I can hide it from the rain without a dedicated camera bag needed.

They don't comfortably fit in jeans or shirt pockets even with the 20mm attached - but then IMHO neither does any other interchangeable lens system, not Q (debateable), not GXR, not NEX, nor even the multitude of bridge compacts - one needs to go S95 or smaller for that.

You Tube

Of course the Q will be somewhat more pocketable than that.

Or isn't, depends on the lens:

The Panasonic 14-42mm lens is somewhat bulky indeed. But compared to the Olympus 14-42mm lens which is 62x43mm the Q kit zoom is only somewhat smaller - 48.5x48mm.

Likewise, 45.5x23mm for the Q kit prime vs. 55.5x20.5mm the GF3 kit prime.

Which means one of three things:
a. Current Q lenses are mis-designed
b. Current Q lenses are designed with a larger sensor in mind
c. There is a lower limit on how small interchangeable lenses can be made and Q is hitting it

Pentax Q + kit prime: 200g + 37g = 237g
GF3 + kit prime: 319g

Pentax Q + kit zoom: 200g + 96g = 296g
GF3 + kit zoom: 475g

Pentax Q sensor size: 28.5 mm^2
GF3 sensor size: 225 mm^2

Would be interesting to see how much the Olympus EPM-1 with the new 14-42mm kit zoom weights; I expect somewhat less than GF3's 475g.

While ogl does overstate his points, I think the intersection of people who both are ready to accept a 1/2.33'' sensor and want interchangeable lenses to go along with that is extremely small. Time may prove me wrong.

I think it will be an SLT/pellix like the new Sonies. They will call it mirrorless for marketing reasons as in some sense it is mirrorless. This will allow even smaller size and K-mount compatibility.

History is full of companies failing to get on the next big thing to avoid cannibalizing their existing cash cows.

Instead of necessarily prescribing clairvoyance to Canikon one might as well assume it is corporate hubris, inertia and myopia.
