For anyone on a budget, I ordered one of these off eBay
Flash Bounce Diffuser Reflective Shovel Fr Canon Nikon YONGNUO Speedlite New | eBay
It's 99 cents and works very well. It's a similar concept to the flash bender but of course cheaper. The flash bender will have its obvious benefits as you can bend it to modify the shape and is more durable. This 99 cent diffuser is made out of cardboard.
Here's sample shot taken with the diffuser. The room was basically completely dark, ceilings were about 200 feet high and black. I pointed the flash straight up and let the diffuser do the work.
This was straight out of the camera, catchlights look great in eyes and looks natural.
ISO 800, f4, 1/100s.

Hi guys. I pulled out my Yongnuo RF603 triggers and 560IV speed light after a while.
I put fresh batteries in the 2 triggers and the speed light. I'm aware that I don't need the second trigger because the YN560IV has a built in receiver.
I put one trigger one the hot shoe of my K5. Both lights on the trigger light up. I put the flash into RX mode and the blue light is on.
When I press the shutter, it does not fire. The LED on the right side of the trigger flashes but the flash does not activate. The sync speed is well below 1/180s so that is not the issue.
I have tried putting the triggers both on TRX and TX, same thing happens. I have reset the camera as well as the flash. In the past, when this setup worked, I remember the trigger would still fire the flash regardless if it was on TX or TRX mode.
Also, I noticed that on the flash in RX mode, there is two dashes (- -) where the power setting should be. I'm guessing that's where my issue is but I can't find any solutions. This is a manual flash so the power has to be adjusted on the flash. But it doesn't let me change the power, it just shows two dashes in its place.
Edit: After messing around for an hour, I decide to make this post. Then 2 minutes after I make this post, I found a solution. I pressed the "Mode" button on the RX screen of the flash a few times and now it works. |

You can't. You can only reduce the noise. The shutter is a physical noise, the mirror flapping in the camera - you can't turn it off.
Mirror less cameras can have a completely silent shutter because they have an electronic shutter.
A way to reduce the noise would be to use a telephoto and get farther away from the subject. There's also blimps, kinda of like cases for your camera but reduce the sound from it. You can also try to crudely make a blimp by wrapping fabric around your camera.

I'm colorblind as well and really can't tell. In fact, I was shooting a few pictures of my teachers once for the school and I decided to go crazy with special effects because they were holding lightsabers. I accidentally turned my blond teacher's hair red on some parts, and I didn't even know until someone pointed it out before it went for publication.
I don't have the need to make sure my lenses are tack sharp or the colors look right. If anything, I think photographing red things makes my camera do weird things. Red is really bright but it lacks detail. I usually just start desaturating the red level until I can get some detail back. I'll take that Sigma 70-200 if you don't need it :)

Yes, I would recommend the YN560 if you're doing studio or portrait stuff, stuff that gives you time to adjust your lights, etc. Instead of event photography where lighting conditions might be always changing and risk missing a shot when you're messing around with the flash settings. What I have right now is the 560IV. I also picked up a set of the RF603's.
Note, there are 2 "models" of the RF603's. The RF603N (Nikon) and the RF603C (Canon). The trigger themselves are the same and will work on all cameras with a hot shoe. The only difference is that the supplied PC sync cable is different, I don't use it so it's not important to me. You also only need 1 RF603 but they come in packages of 2 for $30. The YN560 III and IV both have built in receivers.

Same issue when indoors? The 50-135 is a DA* lens and is weather sealed. The 17-50 is not but I've used mine in light rain once without any issues.

Ah, I don't really need that as if I'm using a flash, I'm in a low light situation anyway. Also, I've been playing around with the flash with a bit indoors. Why does 1/8s, ISO 1600, f/2.8 look the same as 1/160s, ISO 1600, f/2.8? I am using the flash on camera, at around 1/16th power I believe with some plastic diffuser on it.
I'm shooting in manual and the only exposure setting I'm changing is the shutter speed from 1/8s to 1/160s. Everything else stays the same. The 1/8th might be a tad more exposed than the 1/160th but really looks the same.

Yeah it doesn't need the second RF on the speed light. The III and IV have the built in receivers and you just need one of the RFs on the camera.

Hey, I have the original Pentax K5. I had the Yongnuo 560 IV speedlight for a while. Just picked up a set of the RF 603N II today.
I put fresh batteries (Eneloops) into the speedlight, and new batteries as well for both of the triggers.
I set both of the triggers to channel 1. I took one of the triggers, set it to TX mode and put it on the hot shoe of my camera.
I took the other trigger, also on channel 1, put in TRX mode and put it on the speedlight.
Speedlight is in RX mode on channel 1, group A. Advanced settings have also been adjusted so that it is supporting the RF603.
The triggers do light up when I press the buttons on them but don't do anything else, I don't see a blue LED light on the speedlight.
I've Googled for about an hour but I couldn't find a solution. It just won't fire.
EDIT: Works now. Issue was with the camera. The shutter speed was past the maximum sync speed (1/180). Just stopped down a bit and works fine now. Keeping this thread here in the future when someone might have the same issue.

MF doesn't change anything. Shooting JPEG, low quality, 2 megapixels. No corrections for distortion, abberation, shadow or highlight correction.

Tried same test with spot metering and center weighted, same results.
Yes, I am shooting with AF-S. Even if I turn it into manual focus, the results are the same. Slower burst rate on darker objects.
I default have it to focus priority. I set it to release priority as well, no difference. And yes, the shot is in focus before I start the burst.
Even 1/8000s on a dark subject burst is slower than 1/250s on a bright subject. Also tried 2 lenses, same result. Have also tried 3 different memory cards, and made sure battery was fully charged. This issue might not be an issue but just was designed that way, but if it was, I never noticed it before. Anyone else able to test if their camera does the same?

I noticed some issues with the shutter on my K5 yesterday.
About 50k shutter camera. Set at JPEG 2MP, no lens correction, no highlight/shadow correction, using Sandisk 45mb/s class 10 card.
Metering mode is set to multi-segment, aperture priority, hi speed burst, af-s.
When I aim at a dark object like my black backpack (it can still focus on it): burst drops noticeably slower about 4-5fps. I'm in Av and compensating my aperture and ISO to get a shutter speed of 1/250s.
Now when I am at a stack of white papers (again it can still focus on it): burst speed picks up to normal about 7fps. Still in Av and compensating aperture and ISO to get 1/250s.
Now if I go into manual mode and set shutter speed to 1/250s, there is no difference in burst speed between the black backpack and the stack of papers. Same thing happens if I use AE-L at 1/250s, burst rate stays the same.
Any reasoning for this? I haven't had this issue in the past and I normally always shoot in aperture priority with fast moving subjects.

Yep. No reason to upgrade from K50 to K3 unless you need the speedier performance (af, tracking, burst, buffer size). That's the main difference. Of course there's other differences too like the top LCD, K3 has a microphone jack which is almost a necessity if you do video.

Thanks for the info! I did end up grabbing a used K5 at about 45k shutter. It's at around 50k now. Shutter does seem noisy and feels springy. I only picked it up for $230 so it wasn't a large investment, I spent 4x more on lenses already. I wouldn't be too horrified if the shutter on this thing breaks, it's already served me very well for the couple months I've had it.

Just turned 15 a few weeks ago, fellow K5 user. All my Canikon friends love playing with my K5 and they all want a Pentax now. One of them is already starting to sell his equipment to save up and make the switch.

Low light is amazing on Pentax cameras. I feel that Pentax squeezes every last bit of performance from the sensors too. The original K5 and the D7000 had pretty much the exact same sensors, and they were released in 2010 within a month of each other. My friend's D7000 gets horrible purple banding grain even at ISO 12,800 even in decent lighting conditions. My K5 goes all the way up to 51,200 and pics are still "usable" for web and small print. I have tried the T3i in store for about 30 minutes and the ISO performance was absolutely horrible - partially because Canon makes their own proprietary sensors, while other camera manufacturers mainly use Sony's sensors.

For tough stage lighting, I would use spot metering on their faces to get the correct exposure.
